The career of Mr. Frederick MacMonnies as a sculptor began when, as a boy of five years, scarcely tall enough to reach up to the top of the kitchen table, he modeled little figures in dough. Two years later he discovered a better material for his purpose.
At that time a white wax chewing gum was much in fashion among children. Young MacMonnies saved his odd pennies until he could buy what he wanted of it, and then he made from it an equestrian statue of George Washington, which is still among the family treasures.
When he was ten years old Barnum's circus came to town. He was an enthusiastic admirer of the parade, and when the elephant appeared he

FARMERS on the San Joaquin ranch
are seeding 25,000 acres to grain and
7500 acres to beans. The grain acreage will be principally devoted to barley, with a fraction of the total in
wheat. With good climatic con
ditions, between 200,000 and 300,000 sacks
of barley will be harvested. The barley area is slightly but down this season by reason of the fact that more land than ever is to be put into beans.
Last year 6500 acres were devoted to
this latter crop and this year another
thousand acres will be added. The
bean acreage will be the largest in the
history of the ranch. Beans yield fifteen sacks per acre, making a probable total yield for this year about 90,-000 sacks. Both limas and black-eyes are planted.
