Congressman Smith voted against the Philippine tariff bill, as did also McLachlan, Knowland, Gillette and Kahn of this State. Needham, being close to Uncle Joe Cannon, supported the administration measure, and will probably support the statehood bill. He may be thus solidifying himself with shakers of the plum tree at the national capital, but is probably storing up trouble for himself at home. So far as the Philippine tariff bill is concerned, we believe the United States should deal liberally with the lowly Filipino. While his sugar and tobacco may come into competition with our home products, yet we doubt if we have anything to fear from that source. Rather let us lend him a helping hand, not turn our back against him. This is the administration policy, and we believe it is the correct one. So far as the property here a month ago purpose of erecting a block, has been waiting than three weeks for the pany to furnish him with a cate of title to the property are aware of the fact that strict companies are overwork, and that matters seem to be growing worse, so far as the pilin work upon them is concern three weeks is too long a would appear, to ask a man for his title. Let an extra employes be put on to m rush.

Rather let us lend him a helping hand, not turn our back against him. This is the administration policy, and we believe it is the correct one. So far as the statehood bill is concerned, we consider it infamous. Arizona and New Mexico should never be joined as one state. Let the California congressmen stand as a unit against the measure. We admire an insurgent under certain conditions; we have no use for a jellyfish.
The senate committee on irrigation has referred to a subcommittee a bill providing for the withdrawal from public entry of lands needed for townsite purposes in connection with irrigation projects. The purpose of the bill is to bring in an amendment which will deal with the subject of disbursing public money from the irrigation fund. Several members of the committee took the position that the control of these funds should not be left to the geological survey without supervision of congress. There is now about $22,000,000 in the funds affected.
Mrs. Calmes appears to be working an elegant graft upon the sympathetic Los Angeles folk. She seems to have a knack of getting her name into the papers, telling a pitiful tale of woe concerning herself. Recently, upon the plea that her husband was in jail and her baby dying, neighbors raised $78 in cash and $40 worth of groceries for her. seems to have a knack of getting her name into the papers, telling a pitiful tale of woe concerning herself. Recently, upon the plea that her husband was in jail and her baby dying, neighbors raised $78 in cash and $40 worth of groceries for her. Mrs. Calmes lived some months in Anaheim, and last fall caused it to be known that her husband had abandoned her. Kind-hearted people raised $30 for her. She immediately thereafter sold her furniture for $30 and a kit of tools left by her husband, for $10, and with $80 in her possession she set out for Los Angeles. November last she caused the arrest of her recreant spouse, whom she seems to have had no difficulty in locating, and he was sentenced to 150 days in jail for "deserting" his family. Some days ago the woman's funds gave out and another sympathetic dodge was played upon the gullible neighbors. She telephoned to a family here, bidding them send her sewing machine to her. This she desires to sell for $40. A petition is in circulation asking the governor to pardon Calmes. If pardoned, he may be arrested for taking a bicycle from a dealer in this city and failing to return it. The couple will bear watching.

Baseball
The homerun saved the day for balls on Sunday, thereby taking me from the Hoegee Flags of 4 to 3. The game was a thrilling throughout. Crips was in the Olindas and Old Man the slabster for the Flags. Enter added his usual quota holding, none escaping. The ball was good on both sides, all shall on third evaded a hot fift of Burnett's bat and rejeers of the bleachers for my. The visitors had the ball on two occasions but the not permit of any run get-times, sad to relate. The need in the sixth inning and until the last half of the Elwell placed the ball on a neighbor's back yard was up for Hoegees. The being good ball tossers fast company for comfort at any time during the game winners. The local boys put up a fast game, and are hard to beat. Champion umpired a good square game and everything moved off nicely.
