With the annual election for directors of the Anaheim Union Water company only two weeks off and not a single proxy for stock so far received, the indications point to a repetition of last year's meeting, when for lack of a quorum, adjournment was taken and the old board held over. Hitherto in contests for director, the middle of January has seen the lines pretty closely defined between supporters of the majority and minority factions, but of late an era of good feeling seems to have prevailed, with the result that the acute contests for supremacy have been relegated to the rear. This is cause for congratulation, yet it would better serve the interests of stockholders in the southern portions of the district were a quorum present at the coming annual meeting, to the end that two directors might be chosen to represent them upon the dustries for which Italy would be well to have California products in Milan so that companies be made. The total production of California for 1905 was 4 pounds. With but few there was an increase in every county. The increase the production for the prev was 17 per cent, placing C in the front as a dairy star remarkable growth in the output shows a gain in fi of 211 per cent, the greater being made in the counties in the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys. Representative Kahn of nia has introduced a bill priating $1,000,000 to prothe celebration of the foddth anniversary of the d of the Pacific ocean by Vasco with the result that the acute contests for supremacy have been relegated to the rear. This is cause for congratulation, yet it would better serve the interests of stockholders in the southern portions of the district were a quorum present at the coming annual meeting, to the end that two directors might be chosen to represent them upon the board, in place of the present single member, who for some time past, owing to the infirmities of old age, has been unable properly to attend to the onerous cares of his office. Whether a new board be chosen or not, and it looks very like the present board will hold over, Mr. Zeyn will probably resign; and Mr. McDermont also desires to step down and out. These two vacancies will probably be filled by appointment of two local men to act as directors upon the board. Mr. Hale talks of resigning, but he is too valuable a member of the board to admit of that, and his constituents will undoubtedly prevail upon him to continue. Mr. Crowther, Mr. Bradford and Mr. Kraemer are in the same category, and Mr. Sherwood, while he has recently stated that he "has had enough," will probably remain to continue his ground and lofty tumbling act. Mr. Sherwood is probably the most picturesque character who ever sat upon the board, but it seems impossible to lose him. Among the names mentioned for new material is that of Wm. McLauchlin of West Anaheim to succeed Mr. Zeyn. Mr. McLauchlin is a gentleman of education and judgment, and would undoubtedly be a valuable member of the board. He is a successful orange grower, coming to Orange county last year from Riverside, and has already a wide circle of friends and acquaintance. Representative Kahn of Virginia has introduced a bill prizing $1,000,000 to promote the celebration of the fortydth anniversary of the day of the Pacific ocean by Vasco Balboa, by holding an interim exposition in San Francisco in September 25, 1913. It is the intention to naval review of the ships nations in San Francisco on September 25, 1913, the sary of the day on which first saw the Pacific. Two weeks ago, when stated that the military forces in the Philippines were to be idle to a total of 12,000 men, an official of the war department carefully explained that the reason why the First and Second Infantry and the Eighth and Ninth Artillery were being sent to the Phillippines was to carry out the idea of the present need for exercising the army in maneuvers, which were important ordinarily, under the rule of small detachments. He is a successful orange grower, coming to Orange county last year from Riverside, and has already a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. He is personally qualified to make an excellent director of the water company, and we commend his name to the favorable consideration of the stockholders. Under the patronage of the king of Italy an exhibition will be held this year at Milan to celebrate the completion of the Simplon tunnel through the Alps. This exposition is one that appeals directly to California, owing to the fact that it will be given in a country populated by those whose industries are especially applicable to this state. The Italian chamber of commerce of San Francisco is making preparations for an exhibit, and it is suggested that all parts of the state see that some local articles be shown at Milan. One of the claims of California is that it can give a home to any industry that is to be found in any other country, and as viticulture and horticulture are in- In further explanation, it will be noted that this country had observed growing discontent among the mon people in China, that were more and more inclined to criticise their government finally, that the governors various provinces were paying heed than in the past to the tates of the central government Pekin. For this reason the institution feels it is necessary crease the numerical strength the army in the Philippines der that it may have available force to send to any point in where trouble threatened to Americans or American interests. The Transcontinental F committee last week announced number of radical increases in minimum loading of cars from cific coast points to the east. Changes are as follows: Old. The railroads claim that in the past they have been grossly imposed upon by combinations of small jobbers and retailers who have taken advantage of the low minimum quantities required in order to secure carload rates. As a consequence thousands of cars have been hauled 3000 and more miles loaded to only a half or three-quarters of their capacity: Two new banks opening for business in one day is a record for which our citizens ought to feel proud. Various other enterprises getting ready to open their doors attest the spirit of advancement which pervades the community. Old firms reporting the largest volume of business the past year in their history, and new enterprises starting up and reporting a healthy trade. The year 1906 looks good to us. C. Kellogg in Honolulu, at a cost of $300,000. The article referred to is commended to local irrigators who have taken an interest in the Yorba reservoir, which Engineer Kellogg a number of years ago passed upon and approved. That enterprise has hung fire for years on account of the machinations of as cheap a lot of back-cappers and community knockers as ever went unhung. Now the enterprise is about to be taken up again, and we hope it will be pressed to a successful issue. Mr. Kellogg has just completed one of the largest reservoirs in the world, at a cost of more than ten times that of the Yorba reservoir, and yet there are numbsculls who go about the country wagging their long ears and declaring he does not know his business. If we remember rightly, his estimate of the cost of the Yorba reservoir is $27,000. The Yorba reservoir is a small undertaking compared to the mammoth reservoir just completed at Honolulu. He will guarantee the construction of the Yorba reservoir and stands ready to construct it. Further, the irrigators of Anaheim and vicinity demand its construction—no makeshift "night reservoir," but the simon-pure article. Water is being run to waste in the river and sandwash which might just as well be impounded for use later by irrigators. The stockholders of the company last spring unanimously voted in favor of constructing this reservoir, and the Anaheim irrigators insist that the directors perform their duty. Mr. Kellogg will be home from the islands early in February, and he should be put to work upon this from its nearest base. explanation, it was said country had observed a content among the community in China, that they and more inclined to their government, and the governors of the divisions were paying less on the past to the diccentral government at this reason the adminits it is necessary to innumerical strength of the Philippines in ormay have available a to any point in China threatened to American interests.
