Buena Park O. J. Chamberlain and H. O. Smith, two well-known residents of the Park, report the loss of their horses and rigs, on Sunday and Monday evenings respectively. Mr. Chamberlain had driven to church at Norwalk, and was about to drive home, between 10 and 11 o'clock, when he discovered his horse and rig missing. He was informed the rig had only been gone ten minutes. He procured another horse and followed for a distance of four miles, when he lost track of his property. He found his buggy robe lying at the cross-road. Mr. Smith's barn was entered on Monday night, his horse harnessed to a buggy and driven off. Substantial rewards have been offered in each case for the return of the stolen property, and county officers have been notified. W. S. Taylor has sold his ten-acre tract to W. H. Loomis of Long Beach. He takes in exchange town property in Indiana valued at $2500, and $1500 in cash. Three years ago he purchased the land from Mrs. Mason (now Mrs. Hahn) for $1100. Mr. Taylor has the Indiana property up for trade. He is planting 700 acres of barley on the McNally ranch. Milton Holman of Imperial, cousin of Dr. Hasson, is here on a short visit. He went to Los Angeles Tuesday to prove up on 160 acres of land located in Imperial. Vaquero Fuentes of the Bixby ranch passed through here Monday driving a large band of cattle to the Clear-water pastures. His 16-year-old daughter, who is an expert horsewoman, was astride a prancing charger, assisting her father in the round-up. George Carrol, traveling agent for the Carrol nurseries at Anabeim, passed through Monday on his way to Santa Paula for a week's trip. in Imperial. George Carrol, traveling agent for the Carrol nurseries at Anabeim, passed through Monday on his way to Santa Paula for a week’s trip. The picture sale held by the Methodists was a success financially and socially. The residence of Harvey Smith, a mile and a half southeast of Artesia, was destroyed by fire on Wednesday evening last. The family had eaten supper and were preparing to go to Norwalk to attend church, when one of the girls set a match to the gasoline stove. An instant ignition followed and the building was speedily in flames. Rev. Mallows, who had spent the day with the family, lost his hat, overcoat and suit case. Little of the furniture was saved. Mr Smith estimates his loss at $1500. There is no insurance. He will rebuild. The fair given by the ladies of the W.R.C. at Social hall was a success socially and financially. A fine chicken pie supper was served on Friday evening also chicken pie dinner Saturday and fresh oysters and tamales in the evening. A short program was rendered, and everybody enjoyed the occasion. A sum of $45 was cleared. A power sub-station for the electric road is being built at Somerset across the New river, near Bixby’s place. The townsite of Artesia, comprising ninety-seven acres, was this week sold to a group of Santa Ana men. The purchase price is given as $45,000 cash and those forming the purchasing company are C. E. French, D. H. Thomas, M. A. Menges, A. F. Getty, J. D. Parsons, H. Diers, M. Nisson, Orange county Realty Company, E. I. Tolle, O. M. Robbins, Reinhaus Brothers, J. Ferguson, Miss May Patterson and Miss Theresa Reinhaus, all of Santa Ana. The land was owned by the Artesia improvement company. The new company proposes to build a bank building and a Mission style hotel at the town and otherwise improve it to attract purchasers. The city attorney upholds that body in its stand against the county superintendent. The city attorney's opinion is at direct variance with that of Dist.-Atty Head, who advised the county superintendent that the city board had no right to retain the teachers at home during the association meetings. Heathman makes the point that the Los Angeles gatherings are, strictly speaking, not an institute; and that the board of education has done its duty when it pays the teachers for attending the three days' ses- CHRISTMAS GREAT Xmas Shopping is in full blast and our Store is well equipped with the Best known. In Holland two weeks before a marriage takes place cards are sent out declaring that the banns have been published. This is called an "under marriage." The card also announces when the final marriage is to take place. The wedding itself is a small affair, and the civil marriage is the only recognized by law. A church wedding is usually looked upon as a concession to either fashion or sentimentality and is called a "consecration of the marriage." The couple enter the church behind the family members, bridesmaids and other attendants. They are shown to seats before the whole assembly, and the clergyman comes in with two witnesses long after the others have been seated. He first makes a prayer, then delivers a sermon on a suitable text, which usually brings the bride to tears. After that the couple are married. Then a hymn is sung and the blessing given. The whole occupies about an hour and a quarter. Before leaving the church a huge Bible is presented to the bride-groom. The whole occupies about an hour and a quarter. Before leaving the church a huge Bible is presented to the bride-groom. During the two weeks of waiting between the "under marriage" and the real marriage all the wedding festivities take place. The happy couple are literally surfeited with dinners, balls and theater parties, and all manner of practical jokes are played on the pair. At the dinner toasts innumerable are given, and at each the whole company rises from the table to sound and touch glasses with the bride and groom, who never rise. Among their friends the idea is not to allow the couple a night of sleep, if possible, before the wedding day. Canny John Sherman. The late Secretary John Sherman showed his talent for financiering at an early age. He and two of his brothers had been given a sum of money with which to pay their board while on a shooting trip for a week at the house of a farmer near Lancaster, O., their home. The week ended, John ordered the wagon and paid his board. But the farmer refused the money, saying that the sons of Judge Sherman would always be welcome guests. When John found that he did not have to pay his board he sent the wagon back to the barn and stayed another week.—Lip-pincott's. Strawberry and raspberry plants for sale; apply to W. W.
