It is unlawful to sell or manufacture Word comes from the north that George Compere has found in China the long-sought for parasite for purple scale. Mr. Compere traveled through Australia in an unsuccessful quest of the parasite, but in China, where he some years ago found the parasite for red scale, was rewarded by the discovery of the parasite which orchardists confidently believe will rid their groves of a pernacious enemy. Indeed, specimens of the parasite have already been received at the headquarters of the horticultural commissioners in San Francisco. Orange trees upon which were parasitized purple scale were also sent by Mr. Compere, arriving last week on the Korea. The work of propagating them will be begun at once, and when they have bred in sufficient numbers they will be distributed to the growers in the sections where purple scale is prevalent. The new parasite, which has not yet been classified and named, is a minute insect belonging to the family of calcid flies. It is yellow in color, somewhat resembling the insect which is parasitic in this state on San Jose scale. The orange trees containing the parasitized scale are not the two that were sent to China some time ago for that purpose. McLauchlin, who recently purchased the Spooner orchard west of town, has a communication in another column of this issue on the necessity for adopting vigorous measures for exterminating scale pests, which should gage the earnest attention of citizens. Mr. McLauchlin was many years an orange grower Riverside, where scale pests kept under subjection by relenting warfare against them. The orange trees containing the parasitized scale are not the two that were sent to China some time ago for that purpose. Mr. Compere arrived in that country somewhat sooner than was expected, and he obtained there two smaller trees, which are the ones now at the rooms of the horticultural commissioners. Other shipments will be made by him later. Some other insects were sent by the collector also, which it is hoped will prove of benefit to the fruit growers of California. Among them is another parasite for the cottony cushion scale. There is no urgent need for this parasite, as the scale is already well under control in California, Vedalia cardinalis having proved remarkably efficient in destroying the pest. However, the new insect may serve to help out. California has taken the lead in the work of fighting insects with their natural enemies, and the result thus far obtained has far more than justified the comparatively small expenditures that have been incurred in connection with the work. A trainee corps of field inspectors is maintained and each orchard is visited at least once annually. Infected trees are marked and the owner attention called to them. Unheated speedily attends to the breeding in his trees, to go for menace to neighboring orchards; the county does the work for him and he pays the bill. We have a more approved way of dealing things in Orange county. Horticultural commission seems exist purely for ornamental poses. No field inspectors are employed and scale pests have a paratively easy time of it. Time a halt was called in this child's play. The methods of horticultural commission should be changed, and a vigorous fare made upon scale pests. Fancy that Mr. McLauchlin would make an ideal horticultural commissioner. This new territory would, if added to Orange county, increase the county's assessed valuation by $5,000,000, and would lift us from the fifteenth class into the twelfth. Orange county has passed Santa Cruz and Mendocino the past year, although according to the classification of counties a year ago, Santa Cruz is placed in the tenth class, with a total valuation of $13,058,521, while Mendocino is fourteenth with $12,377,783. Orange is fifteenth with a total of $14,842,489—a million and three-quarters more than Mendocino, and nearly half a million more than Santa Cruz. Solano county is twelfth, with $19,022,984, San Bernardino tenth with $21,575,690, and San Diego ninth with $22,-992,109. Orange county is within reach not only of Solano, but in the next two years, with Whittier and the New river strip added to it, will probably pass both of her big neighbors here mentioned. Is this an extreme view of the case? Certainly not. Next year's assessment will show Orange county's natural increase to be several millions. Among the additions will be the two lines of the Pacific electric railway now operating in the county, one along the coast the other through the territory west of this city from Santa Ana to Watts. Added to this is the general upward trend of values along the line of these railways, as well as all over the county, the new Holiday Goods, Goods, Fancy, Crockery, T Boxes and B er Goods, Et A novelty holders; it fi Only An appropr For Only See our west window a filled with Importe ware, etc. Somfrom 50c. to 1 Every article in this w Satur Only Anaheim, Cal. Added to this is the general upward trend of values along the line of these railways, as well as all over the county, the new coast and inland townsites, and city and suburban improvements from one end of the county to the other. The county has enjoyed a most phenomenal growth. Early in the new year a third line of electric railway will traverse the northern and eastern end of the county, and in all probability a fourth, a cross-county line through this city to the ocean, connecting with Placentia and Riverside. If into this project, which is eminently pleasing to our citizens, Whittier throws the weight of its values, Orange county will pass Solano, San Bernardino and San Diego, and occupy the proud position of the ninth county out of the total number of fifty-seven in the great state of California. Our Whittier friends need not feel ashamed of Orange county. We understand a committee of Whittier citizens will soon visit us to look us over and report. They will be welcome.
