Impoverished soil, like impoverished blood, needs a proper fertilizer. A chemist by analyzing the soil can tell you what fertilizer to use for different products. If your blood is impoverished your doctor will tell you what you need to fertilize it and give it the rich, red corpuscles that are lacking in it. It may be you need a tonic, but more likely you need a concentrated fat food, and fat is the element lacking in your system. There is no fat food that is so easily digested and assimilated as Scott's Emulsion of Cod Liver Oil It will nourish and strengthen the body when milk and cream fail to do it. Scott's Emulsion is always the same; always palatable and always beneficial where the body is wasting from any cause, either in children or adults. We will send you a sample free. Is that any treatment of water in California must cononly what has been acced but what seems possible establishment in the future. Real land area of California ultimately one hundred mil- statement of it shows the tremendous potentialities of California irrigated agriculture. What California is now accomplishing by irrigation can partly be told by using as a basis the irrigation census of 1902. According to this census, 1,708,720 acres was irrigated in 1902, which was an increase of 18.2 per cent over the area irrigated in 1899. From 1902 to 1905 the increase has been more rapid, so that it is safe to assert that over 2, 000,000 acres are being watered at this time. This vast area, comprising 35,000 irrigated farms, is raising one-third of the total agricultural produce of the state, and taking into consideration the present high value of irrigated crops, particularly alfalfa, it is reasonable to conclude that these irrigated lands produce, on an average, crops to the value of $25 per acre, or $50,000,000 per annum. Using the figures that were true up to 1902 as a basis, the total cost of systems which make this return possible has been over $27,- 000,000, or over $13.50 per acre. The significance of this last figure is apparent when it is remembered that it is nearly one-half the total value of land and buildings invested in manufactures in California in 1900. This dominant industry of California is in no danger of languishing for years to come on account of the lack of irrigation canals and storage reservoirs. The state is now filling up at the rate of about 100,- 000 people a year and there is sufficient unirrigated land now under canal systems to provide for the farmers among the newcomers for This dominant industry of California is in no danger of languishing for years to come on account of the lack of irrigation canals and storage reservoirs. The state is now filling up at the rate of about 100,000 people a year and there is sufficient unirrigated land now under canal systems to provide for the farmers among the newcomers for the next ten years. The settlers should understand, however, that there difficulties in the way of irrigation in California, as there are wherever irrigation is practiced. A brief review of some of these may not be out of place. PLENTY OF GOLD. Golden California is a term that is particularly apt, and becoming more so as each succeeding year rolls around. Not only has the state golden sunshine in abundance and golden crops as a result, but the actual gold of commerce and the related precious metals are ever on the increase in annual production. California's stream of minerals flowed faster and stronger the past year and added vastly to the wealth of the world. Its total value was nearly $44,000,000, six millions more than the year previous. Actual gold in this amount was over $19,000,000 and copper was nearly $4,000,000. The '49 days of old and days of gold are being smiled back into silence, and the facts and figures of the future are going to out walk them. The great mammoth steam dredger with its arms of steel that never tire are scooping the golden sands from the bottom of the Yuba and the Feather, where weak man single handed did the desultory digging in the olden, golden days when American settlement was young and the work had to stop as the night came on. Now it need never which the available water is so large. Development in Calike other developments, has the lines of most evident returns. So it is that the less of least annual and sumfall were the first to be reby artificial use of water. Of irrigation, however, has moving steadily northward, cepting in the mountainous and the sections of excesfall, the necessity for irrior at least the value of it is not a complete necessity, most universally recognized. Therefore, then, irrigation bowed the line of most eviurn, in the future it will be available water supply. Water supply of the state is dreams and wells. The wells and in use are chiefly in California and in the lowJoaquin and the Santa Clara Out of consideration the supply available in the creeks smaller rivers, thirty-four milfeet of water is sufficient for the fourteen million acres cultural land in California to of two and one-half feet, in most soils is ample for the use of all crops. This vast way of water can never be ensured in irrigation because it be fully controlled, but the The great mammoth steam dredger with its arms of steel that never tire are scooping the golden sands from the bottom of the Yuba and the Feather, where weak man single handed did the desultory digging in the olden, golden days when American settlement was young and the work had to stop as the night came on. Now it need never stop. Gold may come and gold may go, but the tireless dredger goes on forever and takes up the nuggets and the dust that the pioneers walked over and left. It is the ideal way to mine, and its far-reaching results show what Caliifornia is capable of, and what wonderful wealth nature has showered upon her and her people—Pasadena News. MAN'S UNREASONABLENESS is often as great as woman's. But Thos. S. Austin, Mgr of the Republican of Leavenworth, Ind, was not unreasonable when he refused to allow the doctors to operate on his wife for female trouble. "Instead," he says, "We concluded to try Electric Bitters. My wife was then so sick she could hardly leave her bed and five [5] physicians had failed to relieve her. After taking Electric Bitters she was perfectly cured and can now perform all her household duties." Guaranteed by W. B. Hutchinson, druggist, price 50c. Are You Going to Paint?
