WILL ACCEPT DONATION OF PUMPING HOUSE SITE Water Board Appoints Committee to Interview Jake Stern Relative Thereto. ANAHEIM, Cal., Nov. 4, 1905. Regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Anaheim Union Water company, with the following members present: Directors Crowther, Bradford, Kraemer, McDermoni, Sherwood, Hale and Zeyn. G. Reyes appeared before the board offering to rent the Yorba reservoir site for the coming year at the same price as the past year, namely $150. His offer was accepted. Bradford of the ditch committee reported that the committee, together with Mr. Stone and Mr. des Granges, had tested the des Granges-Chapman pipe line and find that it carried easily all the water they tried to put through it, namely, slightly more than 300 inches and would, they thought, have carried fifty inches more. The committee reported having given authority to change the Beebe gate as requested provided the same Porter Says to Sherwood An incident which happened a cent meeting of the water board trickled out from the press desk, and illustrates that a gentleman, while giving es points in the board's proceeding perusal by the intelligent public, much of the fun going on behind closed doors of the meeting Thus it transpires that Arthur superintendent of the company George Washington Sherwood, tor from Fullerton, had a word counter, which was rather one but which the press censor supp altogether. Sherwood for some weeks pa been rushing into print charges sorts of misdemeanors against associates on the board in referencing the purchase of 40 acres of land of the city, and charging that and Tarver Montgomery, the pany's engineer, had reaped pec gain by buying the land in quarrying the company wanted then turning it over at an ad price. The directors replied to these ges at length in these columns a night since, meeting all charges and fully, and branding Sherwood vicious prevaricator. The committee, reported having given authority to change the Beebe gate as requested provided the same be done under the supervision of the superintendent. On the matter of the taxes of the city of Anaheim it was reported that a part of the expense of cleaning was charged on account of franchise on ditches which have been abandoned, and in some cases on those which have been plowed in and cement sidewalks constructed thereon. Referred back to the committee for further investigation. On motion of Hale the ditch committee was instructed to interview the parties interested in the proposed construction of the Young-Wagner ditch and if possible induce them to put in a pipe line rather than a cement ditch. M. Nebelung appeared before the board and offered to loan the company eight or nine thousand dollars on the company's note. On motion of McDermont, seconded by Kraemer it was decided to accept the said loan on December the first. The reports of the finance committee, secretary, treasurer and superintendent were each in turn received and filed. A communication from the Western Gas Engine company calling attention to the change of management of the same was placed on file. A communication from L.. Gleichner asked that a gate be placed in our main canal where it passes his place. Referred to the ditch committee to report at next meeting. A communication from George E. Colby of the University of California presented a tabulated statement of the analysis of the four different samples of water forwarded from this company. The communication was ordered filed and the statement of the analysis was ordered published. Moved by Hale, Whereas in an article written by Sherwood the following A communication from George E. Colby of the University of California presented a tabulated statement of the analysis of the four different samples of water forwarded from this company. The communication was ordered filed and the statement of the analysis was ordered published. Moved by Hale, Whereas in an article written by Sherwood the following statement is made: "I told the board that I had every reason to believe that a pumping site would be donated on either or both sides of the sandwash on very reasonable conditions. Since his purchase, Mr. Stern stands ready to carry out a proposition of this kind," therefore, be it resolved that it is the sense of this board that a committee of two be appointed by the chair to interview Mr. Stern in regard to his proposed donation, and said committee shall have the power to accept any or all of said donation as in their opinion will be of use to the company. The motion was seconded by Bradford and duly adopted. The chair appointed Bradford and Hale as said committee. All regular applications for the transfer of stock were granted by the board. Hale asked permission to purchase from the company five barrels of cement for construction work on his ranch. Granted. On motion of Hale the ditch committee was instructed to take up the matter of securing a 60-foot right of way through tho lands of Paulsen, Berkenstock et al, and changing the boundary line of the district at that point. On motion the meeting adjourned. P. H. KRICK, Secy. ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1906 ECHO OF THE FIGHT FOR EXPERIMENT STATION San Diego Indorses Riverside, and River-side Votes Thanks to San Diego for Its Assistance. Nothing is doing this week in the matter of selecting a site for the State laboratory and experiment station, the different localities contesting for the prize awaiting the coming of Prof. Wickson, to whom the commission has delegated the task of selecting sites for the laboratory and experiment station. An echo of the recent spirited fight for the place by Riverside (which is now conceded to be practically out of the running) appears in the voting of thanks by the county of San Diego for its assistance in the fight. From the San Diego Union of recent date the following interesting sidelight is thrown upon the situation as it existed a month ago: President J. S. Akerman of the Chamber of Commerce received a letter yesterday from the Riverside chamber of commerce acknowledging the action taken by the local chamber in relation to the citrus experiment and pathological station. "It will be remembered that the local chamber received a visit from a side county alone—the boosters have not forgotten his son, and cry out "citrus exstation" in their sleep. Chie Clarke, who was probably the who threw the hooks into Diego chamber of commerce, "Agricultural experiment He is like the man who can full, and was remonstrated with wife. 'Oh, John, John,' woman said, 'Why do you such excess? Why don't you sarsaparilla when you have whiskey you want?'" "My dear," (hic) responded tleman, "when I get all the want, I (hic) can't say sarsaparilla." Editor Clark insists on calling "citrus experiment station," will get over that before he from Washington. Word from San Diego is to that Riverside misinformed regard to the matters at issue that, if all the facts were kept stead of indorsing Riverside county would have probably cured that honor. The Anaheim chamber of which led off for Orange county fight, may decide to send a reactive to San Diego to explain chamber of commerce in that exact status of the situation; and charging that Porter Montgomery, the commissioner, had reaped pecuniary gain the land in question, and company wanted it, and it over at an advanced charge did not sit well stomach. Being the first movers in this enterprise, and being situated in the heart of Southern California's great citrus belt, we would naturally like to have it placed at Riverside. But the great and main point is to get it for Southern California; and this we believe has been accomplished. "I feel that I cannot adequately express the appreciation which our directors feel for your kindness. Whether we are successful or not in our effort to get it here, your action will at least not have been in vain in the broader light of drawing the boards of trade and chambers of commerce throughout Southern California in closer touch, and to a feeling of more kindly harmony. Yours very truly, "GEO. D. WINTERBOTHAN, "Secretary." A tissue of misrepresentation practiced by the Riversiders upon the San Diegans appears to run through all of this. In the first place, as was pointed out at the Los Angeles meeting a month ago, at which Gov. Pardee presided, it was not a "citrus experiment station" the commission was seeking a site for, but an agricultural experiment station, to deal not only with citrus fruits but deciduous fruits as well, and all other plants and vines needing attention. The Riversiders had hoped for the passage of a bill appropriating $50,000 for equipping a citrus experiment station, but this bill had to give way, owing to objections raised against it by the governor, to the bill providing for the present agricultural experiment station. If the Riverside bill had become law, that county would probably have had no opposition as the proper site, it being the largest shipper of oranges in the state. The distance is thirty-four miles from Los Angeles. From Watt station to Santa Ana, a distance of perhaps twenty-five miles, the road is as straight as an arrow. On the downward trip no effort was made toward a quick run on account of the rain, but coming up over the wet rails it was made in fifty minutes to the station at Sixth and Main streets. The fare for the round trip has been fixed at $1, or 65 cents for one way. A celebration of the completion of the electric road is planned for November 22, when a variety of expensive floats will be in parade to represent the various products of the locality.
