The Weekly Gazette. ESTABLISHED 1870 SUBSCRIPTION - 1.50 Per Year HENRY KUCHEL, EDITOR Six months...$1.00 Three months...50cts Payable invariably in advance. Transient advertising $1 per inch per month The GAZETTE is issued every Thursday morning. Entered at the Anaheim Postoffice as second-class matter. The L. P. Fisher Advertising Agency. 425 Montgomery St., San Francisco, is authorized to receive advertisements for this paper. Our paper is kept on file in that office. We have had a call from Messrs. Selig and Gressler of the Edison Electric Company, whose views are referred to briefly in another column. These gentlemen, being corporation officials, are naturally opposed to municipal ownership, and make forceful arguments, from their point of view, against the maintenance of lighting and heating plants by the city. We fully expect, when meeting with gentlemen of such experience and ability, to hear of the beauties of private against public ownership; yet granting everything they say, we are yet persuaded that municipal ownership promises the sought-for alleviation of ills under which the people at large have been suffering. After all is said, municipal ownership will save to consumers the great profits constantly streaming into the coffers of cor tight enough with that number might increase the number other. Moreover, we believe city's present liquor ordinance it relates to wholesaling, is It permits wholesalers the sell in quantities so small there is little difference them and the retailers, as they get a license for $10 retailers are charged $month. A manufacturer should, we believe, be permit sell his manufactured article lower license rate than yet when he carries on the whisky, gin, rum, beer, and liquors, in any old quantity should be required to pay retail liquor license. It is to give him a license so to $10 per month, while the specting retailer is assessed the same privilege. Furious Conrad is conducting a white liquor establishment, as was lically stated at the last meet the trustees, why does no marshal do his duty and this violator of the law? The ple of this city, so far as we been able to learn, are resolved break up this illicit traffic, is up to the marshal to act speedily act, in the premises The counties of Southern California make an especially showing in Controller Co private against public ownership; yet granting everything they say, we are yet persuaded that municipal ownership promises the sought-for alleviation of ills under which the people at large have been suffering. After all is said, municipal ownership will save to consumers the great profits constantly streaming into the coffers of corporations the country over. Why cannot an enlightened and conservative community go into the manufacture of electricity as well as private enterprise? Mechanical experts must be employed to carry on the works; why cannot the municipality secure such services as advantageously as under private control? Why cannot gas and electricity be furnished to consumers at cost, or at as near cost price as may be deemed practicable? Why not save the millions of dividends upon watered stock to the consumer? Municipal ownership seeks to give to consumers public utilities at cost; private control, at a profit to its stockholders. If these profits were in all cases reasonable and just, there would be little need for municipal ownership. Yet these profits have on occasion risen to be absolutely burdensome to the people. We are living in an age, it seems, of corporate aggrandizement. If municipal ownership has its faults, so has monopoly its McCurdys and the long string of abuses with which the daily press is burdened. Municipal ownership offers a panacea for excessive charges against the consumer. Why cannot a municipality sweep aside these burdensome tolls and furnish these utilities to consumers at cost? The city trustees should adopt a rule whereby applications for sa- The total valuation of the seven counties is $1,624,990. San Francisco remains the principal county, with an assessed value of $523,385,667, twice that of Angeles, while Alameda, the county in the test, has $22,624 Orange county is rated fifteenth county in the test, has a greater assessed value than Santa Cruz, in the third class, and Mendocino, in the eighteenth. In point of assessment, Orange county should thirteenth in the list. It is being up on Solano, the twelfth will undoubtedly pass it before years. The counties having ever wealth than Orange, are Francisco, Los Angeles, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Joaquin, Samento, Humboldt, San Diego, Bernardino, Fresno, Contra Butte, and Solano. ELECTIONS will be held Tuesday November 7, in seven states: six of the larger cities. Inachusetts, Rhode Island, Virginia and Ohio, a governor and state officers are to be chosen in Pennsylvania, Maryland Nebraska minor state of judges or regents of the state. Municipal ownership offers a panacea for excessive charges against the consumer. Why cannot a municipality sweep aside these burdensome tolls and furnish these utilities to consumers at cost? The city trustees should adopt a rule whereby applications for saloon licenses shall in future be posted for a month before final action is taken upon them. This, not merely in order to prevent rushing through an application for a blind pig under guise of a wholesale liquor house, but because it is right and proper for business men and people generally to be apprised before-hand of the existence of such application, to the end that they might be given an opportunity of entering protest against it. If such rule were enforced we should have no more gumshoe applications, and seeing them rushed through before a halt can be called to them. Once for all, let it be said again that this city has quite enough saloons. Instead of increasing this number by "wholesale houses," rather let the number be reduced. We think the city can get along quite well with say four whistle-wetting emporiums—we might try that for a spell, and if we find we cannot get Elections will be held Tuesday November 7, in seven states six of the larger cities. The democrats and popes have fused in Nebraska; the publicans and democrats agree the union labor party in Francisco, and the republican other parties against the ccrats in Louisville. In Pennsylvania, there has been a miscellaneous indorsement of republican and democratic didates. The Chino sugar factory nounces an increase in the price of beets for 1906. The mini price will be $3.50 per ton beets showing 11 per cent of sales. For each additional percentage sugar above 11 per cent there be paid 25 cents per ton additio up to and including 15 per with that number, we increase the number by an over, we believe the present liquor ordinance, as no wholesaling, is a farce. Wholesalers the right to quantities so small that little difference between the retailers, and yet a license for $10, while are charged $50 per manufacturer of wine. We believe, be permitted to manufactured articles at a rate than retailers, carries on the sale of rum, beer, and other any old quantity, he required to pay the $50 for license. It is unfair in a license so to do at month, while the law-re-tailer is assessed $50 for privilege. Further, if conducting a wholesale establishment, as was published at the last meeting of lies, why does not the his duty and arrest of the law? The peo-city, so far as we have to learn, are resolved to this illicit traffic, and it marshal to act, and it, in the premises. Above 15 per cent for each additional per cent of sugar 30 cents per ton will be paid. On this schedule 16 per cent beets will pay $4.80 per ton; 17 per cent,$5.10; 18 per cent,$5.40; 19 per cent,$5.70, etc. It is estimated that on the percentages of past years that this will be an average increase of 35 cents a ton on all beets raised for this factory. During an official massacre at the village of Kouklish the Turkish commandant—a fat major—slept and smoked in the shade of a tree near the scene of carnage. The trumpet sounded for the assault, and the soldiers proceeded to rob, kill, burn and violate. The trumpet next sounded the retreat, but the troop refused to obey, and the fat major continued to sleep and smoke. When spoken to about the excesses of his men, he replied: "What can one do? They are so badly brought up!"—Paris Macedoine. Novel Oyster Parties. Oyster parties are the great diversion of the Spanish gentlemen who pay family visits to Vigo. The party goes out in a large flat bottomed boat. Then the oysters are fished up, opened and eaten on the spot, and a prize goes to the guest who can show most shells at the end of the day. In excuse it may be said that the Vigo oyster is small, for a prize winner will sometimes show as many as 200 shells. Always Reliable Winter Is Here!
