Monthly Review of Trade Conditions
For September In Southern California
Interest of Southern California agriculturally just now centers in the bean crop which promises to be very large. Threshing is progressing rapidly. The yield in Los Angeles and Orange counties totals 150,000 sacks and it is conservatively estimated that Ventura county's output will go beyond the 600,000 bag mark. Many contracts have been made at 3c but growers who have not sold are holding for 3½ and 3¼c. Prunes may go higher, it is not reasonable in existing conditions for them to go lower. The sugar campaign is about half finished. Sugar contents still run high, averaging about 18.53 per cent. The sugar crop will be large. There is every reason to believe from general situation that the sugar market will rule low for the month to come.
Canned fruit and vegetable market
To call the forest interest to mount interest might, at first seem unjustified; but if it is far an interest paramount when regard of the other interests of the pend directly upon it, and more if it suffers, then certainly the interest of California is pardon Without its forests, the greatest of the state in irrigation would die and fade. Without its formines of California would cease operated; the railroads would stop running or they would almost prohibitive expense. The large lumber business of would vanish. Stock raising the summer range in certain forest reserves would be important its present form. In a word, fornia and in every other mountain state, it is the foreunderlies the general prosperity California is most fortunate in an understanding of this great widespread among its people.
One most fortunate outcome public feeling, if I may be able to call it so, was the cooperation the state undertook with the Forestry of the United States department of Agriculture me two years ago, and which is the timed for two years longer. The results of this cooperation of which are almost ready formation, are a forest map of with descriptions of the different of forest trees; studies of the nation of timber trees, and a vast study of forest fires, and means for preventing them.—FORD PINCHOT, Chief U.S. Service.

LOS ANGELES STRATEGY
Situation In California
Essential facts about the forest in California are three:
The state has passed a forest under it a state forester of land and training has been apnothing could be more hopeful.
Good progress has been made in an area of land for government reserves more nearly suffilently in many other states to provide for the interests which,
sence of the reserves, must

Parasitatively favorable situatory which these three facts

forest society, through the
agitation it has carried on,
invigorous campaign it has

people of the state, is enery great credit. Without

and Forest society of Southornia; and individual men,
far too numerous to me,
have unselfishly and enerven their time and effort to

The forest interest the paraterest might, at first sight,

interests of the state detely upon it, and must suffer
then certainly the forest
of California is paramount.
As forests, the great interests
It would be hard for a person living in any other city in the world to conceive just what an indispensable animal the camel is to the prosperity and welfare of Aden and the adjacent part of Arabia. Even in the ordinary work done by a horse in any other place or country the camel is always used here—in fact, except for drawing a carriage, it completely takes the place of the horse. The camel is used for hauling produce in carts, for carrying freight and other articles and for draw-ing the sprinkling and water carts. It makes a comfortable riding animal, and at a feast its flesh, of all meats, is considered the best. But it is as a means of transportation and as a beast of burden in passing to and from the interior of Arabia to Aden that it becomes indispensable, and it is altogether probable that without it Aden would have never become the great distributing point it now is. Articles shipped from here to points across the gulf of Aden are also transported by camels into the interior of the African continent.
The amount of the burden varies according to the distance to be carried and to the size of the animal. In carrying goods to and from the wharfs to the different warehouses a few miles a camel will carry a load of from 600 to 900 pounds, but for a long journey from one-third to one-half of this amount is considered a camel load. United States Consular Report.
Just a Hint.
"John," she said softly, "have you been saying anything about me to mother lately?"
"No," replied John. "Why do you ask?"
"Because she said this morning that she believed you were on the eve of proposing to me. Now, I do not wish you to speak to mother when you have anything of that kind to say. Speak to me, and I'll manage the business with mother."
And John said he would.
Not an Episcopalian.
When Bishop Codman was appointed to the Episcopal diocese of Malne he made a tour of his diocese and happened to stroll into a woodman's cottage. Asking the woman of the house if there were many Episcopalians around there, she replied: "Well, I don't know. They caught some wild thing out here in the woods a couple of weeks ago, if that's what you mean, but I think my husband said it was a woodchuck."
have unselfishly and energetic given their time and effort to mount interest of the state. The forest interest the par-terest might, at first sight, justified; but if it is fair to call it paramount when nearly all our interests of the state dearly upon it, and must suffer, then certainly the forest of California is paramount. The forests, the great interests in irrigation would dwinkle. Without its forests, the California would cease to be the railroads would either sing or they would be run at exhibitive expense. Of course number business of the state rush. Stock raising without other range in certain of theerves would be impossible in any form. In a word, in Cali-land in every other timbered state, it is the forest which the general prosperity, and this most fortunate in having standing of this great fact so real among its people.
It fortunate outcome of this being, if I may be allowed to see was the cooperation which undertook with the Bureau of the United States De-Of Agriculture more than ago, and which is to be con-duced two years longer. Among all of this cooperation, many are almost ready for publica-forest map of the state, descriptions of the different types trees; studies of the reproduc-uber trees, and a very impor-ous of forest fires, and of the preventing them.—By GIFCHOT, Chief U. S. Forest
When Bishop Codman was appointed to the Episcopal diocese of Maine he made a tour of his diocese and happened to stroll into a woodman's cottage. Asking the woman of the house if there were many Episcopallians around there, she replied: "Well, I don't know. They caught some wild thing out here in the woods a couple of weeks ago, if that's what you mean, but I think my husband said it was a woodchuck."
The Kicker.
"Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast," quoted the young lady with a simper as she seated herself at the plano.
"That may be," muttered a savage bachelor, "but there are some of us in this crowd who are civilized and deserve a little consideration."
Practical.

Virtue may be its own reward, but some people make a trademark of it.
He Was Safe.
A teacher in one of the public schools asked a little Irish boy why he had been absent a day, to which the youth replied:
"My mother had the mumps, and I had to go and get the doctor."
"But don't you know that the mumps is catching, Johnny?"
"Yes, but this is my stepmother, and she never gives me anything."—New York Times.
