CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The directors of the chamber of commerce met in regular session on Thursday evening. Present, a full board.
The Finance committee presented its report which was ordered filed.
Director Spake exhibited some advertising literature. He was instructed to get bids from the printers for a pamphlet shortly to be issued by this chamber.
The entertainment committee announced that a drama would be put on about Nov. 1st. The annual banquet will be held later, when all previous events in that line will be eclipsed.
The chamber vigorously discussed the propriety of rejuvenating the city fire department. Something ought to be done to keep the fire apparatus in good repair. Some of the directors signified their willingness to join a volunteer fire company and "run with de machine." How are the fire plugs?
The sanitary condition of some quarters was condemned in emphatic manner and it is the intention of the chamber of commerce to back up the Health Officer in a general clean-up crusade.
Director Miller reported there was nothing new in the laundry situation. He stated that Mr. Tipton would donate a building and lot on Chestnut street for a laundry.
A public park was discussed and new projects inviting the investment of capital are in contemplation. The directors all take a keen interest in the town's welfare and some substantial business projects are promised for the near future.

ruling well. With no spot stock and about two-thirds of the new crop contracted to shippers, there is nothing in the situation to justify any prediction of lower prices. The sugar campaign is in full swing, marketable sugar now being shipped from all the factories. Oxnard output will be 25,-000 tons. The beets have averaged 16 per cent sugar contents and 82 per cent purity, which means good money in beets this year. Many farmers have already secured contracts for next season's acreage.
It certainly has been no effort for citrus growers who have had fruit to ship, to look happy the past month. Orange shipments have been kept at about 15 carloads a day and prices have been exceptionally good, the average fancy Valencia bringing $5 a box. Not in ten years have lemon prices, both at auction and retail, been so high. It has been difficult to quote f. o. b. prices. With lemons bringing $7 a box in eastern auction marts, every marketable lemon has been rushed forward. It is estimated not more than 300 carloads remain for September shipment. The citrus crop the current year will total up in excess of 30,000 carloads. The Exchange handling about half the crop, will distribute about $7,000,000. Prices have averaged $10 more per car than last season. The coming crop it is estimated will be 10 to 15 per cent more than the one just marketed and fruit is expected from present outlook to ripen three weeks earlier. The situation in cured fruit has been interesting. The strength of the rising market aroused the solicitude of the shorts to cover their sales and demand for dried peaches for a while was feverish at 6½ to 6¾ for choice. Seven cents is now being freely offered with 8 for fancy.
