Why Horseshoe Paint Costs Less Than Ordinary Paint
The Strictly Pure White Lead, Linseed Oil and Turpentine Dryer necessary to make each gallon of lead and oil paint will cost you at least $1.75 and each gallon will not cover more than 200 square feet two coats.
So divide the cost per gallon ($1.75) by the amount of surface each gallon will cover (200 sq. ft.) and the result proves that lead and oil paint costs you over 87 cents per 100 square feet of painted surface.
Each gallon of ordinary adulterated ready-mixed paint, will not cover more than 200 square feet two coats because the adulterants retard its spreading capacity.
Divide the cost per gallon ($1.50) by the amount of surface each gallon will cover (200 sq. ft.) and the result proves that ordinary ready-mixed paint costs you 75 cents per 100 square feet of painted surface.
Now, each gallon of Horseshoe Brand Prepared Paint covers 300 to 350 square feet two coats because the zinc (combined with lead) carries 60 per cent more oil than lead and as there is no adulteration in it this paint spreads much farther.
Divide the cost per gallon ($1.75) by the amount of surface this gallon will cover (say only 300 sq. ft.) and the result proves that Horseshoe Brand Prepared Paint costs you only 58¼ cents per 100 square feet of painted surface as compared to 87 cents for lead and oil and 75 cents for cheap ready-mixed paint.
In other words — if you use Horseshoe Brand Prepared Paint instead of lead and oil, you save, in first cost alone, more than 25 cents on every dollar’s worth of paint you buy.
And if you use Horseshoe Brand Paint instead of ordinary ready-mixed paint you save, in first cost alone, just 22 cents on every dollar’s worth of paint you buy.
It’s the one paint you know is absolutely pure because it’s the only paint with a Chemists’ Certificate of Absolute Purity on every can.
THE HUMAN BRAIN.
It Is Our Most Highly Specialized and Vitalized Organ.
The story of the brain as scientists have gradually unfolded its peculiar construction is of marvelous interest. This pulpy and apparently homogeneous mass is revealed to us as most highly specialized and vital organ in the human body. It consists of hundreds of millions of separate and independent organisms, known as nerve cells, but now called “neurones.” These units of the brain are independent bodies and consist of a cell body, its axis and its branch. The cell body contains within its ering membrane elements which erate the nerve force or energy. An axis is the nerve or medium we conveys that force, and the brain are the means of communication between neurones with each other and with the organs and tissues to which nerve is distributed. The life history of these microscopical bodies is same as the cells of other organs tissues. They are implanted before birth and may remain dormant for lifetime. If stimulated to activity enlarge through more abundant nutrition, but waste and atrophy when stimulant is removed. They are ungoing constant changes through the process of nutrition and from the numerous impressions made them by objects within and with the body.—Stephen Smith, M. D., D., in Leslie's Magazine.

A most repulsive cosmetic, but which some Roman dames of antique esteemed as most precious, was blood of the young hare.
During the sixteenth century the ter in which beans had been boiled used as a complexion wash, and farinaceous water is entitled to all fame it possesses. The ancient G whose beautiful color was a subject so much envy to the patrician Romans washed their faces in the foam of also in a liquid made from dissolved chalk in vinegar.
An old Italian recipe for obliteration the injurious effects of salt air sunshine is to bathe the face with white of an egg well beaten. Dry on the skin and rinse it off fifteen minutes. This treatment be repeated three or four times and ways at night before retiring.

Ma dame dampened her raven tresses the strongest of muriatic acid and in the sun to bleach her hair to coveted yellow. Others used lye afterward anointed their heads oil made from goat fat, ashes or beech tree and certain yellow flowers.
SHAKING HANDS.
A Few General Rules That Go Through This Phase Of Etiquette.
When to shake hands is a sure which depends somewhat on circumstances, yet a few general rules must given. When a man is introduced a woman she does not shake him with him unless he is decidedly eloquent or distinguished. If he is the husbond or brother of the woman present him it is natural to receive him dially by shaking hands, but it form to do so if he is a mere acquaintance.
A hostess should shake hands every guest who comes to her both on their arrival and departure. Women do not shake hands when introduced to each other, but not bow. When, however, a young girl presented by a friend to a maid woman the latter shakes hands her, but the girl must not make first advance.
Men shake hands when introduce each other as an expression of will. When logging an entertaining

To Strengthen the Eyes.
The eyes will be greatly strengthened by putting the face down in glass or eye cup of water the thing in the morning and opening under water. This is somewhat cult to do at first, but if the water two or three days be tepid and gaily be made colder by imperfect degrees until it is no shock to put face into quite cold water it will become easy and is very invigorating and refreshing. The eyes should wipe after this by passing a soft el very gently from the outer angle toward the nose.
ARE YOU ENGAGED?
Engaged people should remember that after marriage, many quarrels be avoided, by keeping their digs in good condition with Electricitors. S. A. Brown of Bennett S. C., says: "For years my wife ferred intensely from dyspepsia implicated with a torpid liver, until her strength and vigor, and came a more wreck of her former Then she tried Electric Bitters, helped her at once, and finally her entirely well. She is now and healthy." W. B. Hutchard druggist, sells and guarantees the 50c a bottle.

EDITOR GAZETTE—Through the Los Angeles papers we are informed of a very important and large deal which that city is contemplating, the buying up of all the Owens River country to bring all water of Owens River into Los Angeles. This is a very costly undertaking and will take a long time to accomplish. It will be a big elephant on their hands, for we all know it cost money to operate it. Take for instance our own Water Company; it cost more to bring our water here by gravity 14 miles than to pump it out of the ground here. The water of Owens River runs now into Owens Lake and there sinks underground through the lower valleys into the ocean. Nearly all our underground water in this vicinity comes from that source, and this is the reason water never fails here—the rainfall for the past ten years could not give us a drop of water in the middle of the summer. Why Los Angeles is so very anxious to get this water, 240 miles away, at a very tremendous cost, when it could get it so much nearer and at very little ex-

Drying preparations simply develop dry catarrh; they dry up the secretions, which adhere to the membrane and decompose, causing a far more serious trouble than the ordinary form of catarrh. Avoid all drying inhalants, fumes, smokes and snuffs and use that which cleanses, soothes and heals. Ely's Cream Balm is such a remedy and will cure catarrh or cold in the head easily and pleasantly. A trial size will be mailed for 10 cents. All druggists sell the 50c size. Ely Brothers, 56 Warren St., N.Y.
The Balm cures without pain, does not irritate or cause sneezing. It spreads itself over an irritated and angry surface, relieving immediately the painful inflammation.

pense, looks strange. To give a little illustration how to do it: When V. Hall of the Olinda ranch was boring for oil below the hills on the mesa, instead of oil he struck a large stream of water pretty far below the surface, and now has three water wells, out of which he pumps from 300 to 500 inches of water with a powerful steam engine, about 1½ miles away upon a high hill 500 feet high, into a big reservoir. From here it is distributed all over Oil City for domestic and pumping purposes and all steam boilers; and not alone in Oil City, but the adjoining Brea and Soquel Canyons are supplied from it automatically. He uses his own natural gas for heating, which costs nothing, and all his expenses for pumping water are for two men who operate it night and day, working 12 hours each.
Now, my impression is that Los Angeles could get the same water very near their doors, out of the ground, cleaned of all noxious substances, by pumping water from this valley into their own. Let us see how much we could spare. We have about 500 pumping plants in operation in this valley, which are pumping at least 20,000 inches, and we have our draining ditches in the Peatlands which convey about 10 thousand inches of water into the ocean, all water as clear

YOU ENGAGED?
People should remember, marriage, many quarrels can be keeping their digestionsition with Electric Bit-Brown of Bennettsville.
For years my wife suffly from dyspepsia, coma, torpid liver, until she length and vigor, and bewreck of her former self. And Electric Bitters, which at once, and finally made well. She is now strong.
W. B. Hutchinson, and guarantees them, at geles could get the same water very near their doors, out of the ground, cleaned of all noxious substances, by pumping water from this valley into their own. Let us see how much we could spare. We have about 500 pumping plants in operation in this valley, which are pumping at least 20,000 inches, and we have our draining ditches in the Peatlands which convey about 10 thousand inches of water into the ocean, all water as clear as crystal. The last amount we could spare.
The fact is, Los Angeles is located in the wrong valley. It ought to have been built right here in this vicinity where water is so very abundant for all purposes, and costs nothing, just to pump it. Fuel is very abundant here too; we can get all natural gas from Hall's wells if we want it.
Our two Water Companies in this valley ought to look out; it is possible that water will be scarce in the river after the water in Owens River is diverted. We ought to send out in time one of our best and most experienced civil engineers—for instance, Clay Kellogg—to investigate and report.
Those stock ranchers of Owens valley have a certain riparian right, but they cannot claim all the water.
