In our local columns this morning will be found an interesting discussion of the local gas situation, from the view point of municipal ownership. The city trustees have decided to erect municipal gas works here; to be operated in conjunction with the electric light and water service. The views of Engineer Copeland upon this subject will be found in another column, and merit careful perusal. The gas company asked $33,500 for its plant, while Copeland's figures show that a new plant, properly constructed and equipped, can be erected at a cost of $15,000. Copeland’s report shows the gas company's plant can be made available for the city's uses by the expenditure of $1,500 in repairs and necessary alterations. The city trustees deducted this sum from his estimate of the cost of new works and on Tuesday offered casting about right now for any candidate for his office sprint fest next spring. The latest picture of Greeley, all the way from WHISKY shows that he has sacrifices beautiful pink mustache. O JOHNY why did you do it? One of the most important additions to the faculty university is that of Dr. J.J.Wolle who will arrive at Be within the next few days to the chair of Music which created by an act of the last session. On Tuesday evening the board decided to call for $15,000 bonds for the erection of gas works to be operated with the water and electric lighting plant. Another election will be called to vote $23,-000,000 to bring the water from the river to the city. The conduit will be 240 miles in length, its construction being one of the largest engineering feats ever attempted by any American city. Los Angeles is noted for the accomplishment of big things, and it will doubtless carry this latest enterprise to successful completion. It owns 30,000 inches of water in the Owens river valley, and with this piped to the city the municipality will have an abundance for domestic purposes as well as a volume for irrigation which will cover thousands of acres adjacent to the city. Marshal Steadman has the Sciatic rheumatism. His friends are filling his ears with sure cure remedies. One advises a vegetable diet, another one of milk and honey, and a third advises pills. If the unfortunate victim of these base conspirators adopts even part of the many relief measures suggested, we might as well begin widespread to require special treatment. The "Red-leaf disease" that time associated by many with the Anaheim disease some with Anthracnose. This theory was set aside a priori count of the difference in their canes and grapes, and also account of the lack of virulence disease when attacking their vines. The suggestion that Anthracnose was easily setting off markings of the disease on canes, and berries are of no different character; it is very clear that the true Anthracnosis been found in a vineyard or Canyon On my return from this trial investigation I passed through Valley to compare the “Redease” with a malady similar acter that had caused damage sections, and after consulting Dr. E.W.Hilgard, it was decided a methodic study of leaf disease,”and Mr.O.Bu appointed to carry out the investigations. He will arrive at Berkeley next few days to take off Music, which was an act of the legislature. Dr. Wolle, who presides over the department and head, is a native of Pennsylvania. He lives on a Moravian family with this musical education in Savannah community; later abroad. He is perhaps one as Director of Bach which have given him a reputation as an orchid leader of choruses. A description of some of the will be given in separate bulletins, while others have been already discussed in former publications: Report of Viti-cultural Commission, 1893; Bulletins Nos. 127, 131, 146, 148, of the Agricultural Experiment Station of University of California. Mr. Butler's observations seem to show that the cause of the Red-leaf disease is not parasitic, but that it is more probably due to soil and atmospheric conditions. These observations will be kept up during the coming season, and a careful examination of the subsoil and moisture-contents of the experimental plots will be made through the growing season so that definite conclusions may be drawn. E.H.TWIGHT. THE RED LEAF DISEASE. In 1903, the attention of the public was aroused by the alarming notices published in the Sonoma county papers about a new and mysterious malady, which was unanimously denominated Red-Leaf Disease. Opinions were freely airied as to the nature of the disease, but the disease itself was not described. The reader was left to conjecture, from the name grape-growers were agreed upon giving it, that a red leaf was its main characteristic. Beyond this, however, the grape-growers did not entirely agree;the term red leaf is indefinite enough to allowofa wide individualistic interpretation, andthegrowerwhohadvines sufferingor dyingfromacauseundiscoverrbletohim, andshowingaffoliagetintedper chance, hereandtherewithredwasinclinedtocallthetroublefromwhichhis vineswerefailingtheRed-leafdiseaseThis Clean Up o We still have a good amounton hand which we are two weeks. To accomp suchas Wash goods Shirt Skirts,C Summer Millinery ano so reduced as to bear nobe counted They sim ASHER & WH Much is expected of this field at California, Park Theatre offers greatzes for the production Health Board Meets.
