The Paint— You Know is Best TODAY — every progressive painter — everybody who understands paint — knows that an absolutely pure lead-zinc linseed oil paint is the best paint — far better than pure lead and oil because lead and oil paint will always "chalk off" in a short time. Rub your hand over a surface painted with lead and oil — see the powder of loosened lead on your hand — the paint is no longer protecting the house, but being blown away and washed off by the rain. "Chalking" is the principal objection to pure lead and oil paint. The zinc, combined with lead in Horseshoe Brand Prepared Paint corrects the faults of lead because zinc is naturally very tough and so it makes a tougher and doubly durable surface that can't "chalk off" and lose its silky lustre. Zinc carries 60 per cent more oil than lead and that's why Horseshoe Brand Prepared Paint spreads more than a third farther—and as it costs less per gallon in the first place—it costs over a third less on the building. Now, oil is the life of paint and zinc is the backbone that holds up the oil and protects it—and that's why Horseshoe Brand Prepared Paint gives double the wear. Because the great majority of ready-mixed paints are "doped" with cheap and harmful adulterants, which retard their spreading capacity and ruin their wearing quality, you have never been sure of getting absolutely pure lead-zinc-linseed oil paint. But you can be sure now — because every can of Horseshoe Brand Prepared Paint bears a Chemists' Certificate of Absolute Purity. You get the proof before you get the paint. That makes you sure — makes you sure of the best quality and the best results. Horseshoe Brand Prepared Paint is the only Certified Paint — so it's the one paint you know is the best. Notes on the California Vine Disease Prof. Newton B. Pierce, pathologist in charge of the Pacific Coast Laboratory and Plant Improvement Garden at Santa Ana, has prepared the founding article on the vine disease for a meeting of the Viticultural club at Helena: Few Vitis vinifera varieties grapes are able to withstand the demic development of the California vine disease. The hardiest of the ropean types usually die of the disease sooner or later, when situated in midst of an infected district. Theceptions to these statements areand in most cases are more apparent—i.e., a vine or variety being much hardiness in one situation may clearly show its susceptibility der different circumstances. Among the whole list of cultivar grape varieties, thus far studied, subjected to the influence of this ease in its epidemic form, the Lenoir grape is most resistant. It is so bled in the face of the malady that it falls into conjunction with its blood relationa class by itself. The work of United States department of agriculture has demonstrated this beyond reasonable doubt. Vineyards o sixteen and twenty-three years o the Lenoir grape are now be eight tons of fruit to the acre in midst of the earliest infected di in the state, and where the surrey vineyards, tens of thousands acr extent, have long since perished. This hardiness of the Lenoir been observed since the first studythe disease by the writer—in Nand its resistance, then noticed i But you can be sure now—because every can of Horseshoe Brand Prepared Paint bears a Chemists' Certificate of Absolute Purity. Americanizing the Orient Beyond the American accessions, Siberia is recognized and sought as a country whose growth can easily parallel that of western America and which, therefore, cannot help affording commercial chances, both large and small. Of course its most immediate prospects are in connection with its agriculture, and in this respect it is not necessary that, in order to give the country value as a place for trade exploitation, the optimistic prophecies of its ability to supply the world with wheat in competition with America and Argentine should be fulfilled.
