Of course, there would be no orchards. I did not know until this enlightening article appeared that the A. U. W. Co.—in addition to its semi-annual task of levying assessments—is also engaged in that most noble pursuit, philantrophy. It sounds so smooth—so plausible—this apparent generosity of the board of directors: to allow opposition water companies the free use of the A. U. W. Co. ditches. But behind it all there is another meaning. Encourage the Anaheim district to put in pumping plants so that the other side can buy up more and more stock, and then some day, when the pumping plants give out, and you want water, you will find that you can't get it. All the water will be diverted to the north side. It is the old story over again, of the fox and the crow. "Ah, ah! My good soul," said the fox, after procuring the piece of cheese, "Learn that all who flatter have their own ends in view." Anaheim thinks she is rightfully entitled to some of the cream. As I understand it the Cajon company was taken into the Anaheim company, debts and all. Or was it the other way? Anaheimers are angels? That has not been their former reputation.
