VENEZUELA has placed orders in Europe for torpedo boats with guns and ammunitions at a cost of about $2,500,000, a larger amount than that little South American republic has ever expended at one time for war materials. An American who has just returned from Venezuela is authority for the statement that President Castro recently declared that he was going "to fight the Yankees," which explains the unusually large orders for ships, arms and ammunition. It is reported that when the Venezuelan executive heard recently of the appointment by President Roosevelt of Judge William J. Calhoun as special commissioner to investigate certain affairs at Caracas his anger was great and his language immoderate. He announced that he would not permit an emissary of President Roosevelt

It is reported that when the Venezuelan executive heard recently of the appointment by President Roosevelt of Judge William J. Calhoun as special commissioner to investigate certain affairs at Caracas his anger was great and his language immoderate. He announced that he would not permit an emissary of President Roosevelt to land in Venezuela.
Reports which come leaking out from St. Petersburg throw an interesting light upon the military system prevailing in Russia. Thus we read that when Alexief was on his way to the Liao Tang peninsula he traveled in a special train, as befitted his station, but disdaining to travel at night, he halted his train at sundown, refusing to give orders to go ahead until daylight. Moreover the old gentleman would not have his slumbers disturbed by trains passing on sidings, and so all traffic on the Trans-Siberian railway ceased for ten hours. Military trains bearing soldiers to the front were delayed a week by this Muscovite way of railroading. When Gen. Krippenberg was about to depart for Manchuria he found his special train had not been fitted up with electric lights and he refused to proceed until these were provided. A delay of two weeks was thus entailed. Trains bearing wounded soldiers back from the Yalu river were sidetracked to afford right of way to special trains having officers wives aboard. These incidents are mere outcroppings of a corrupt system whose inefficiency was abundantly proven whenever put to the test.
Next Saturday occurs the election in the Anaheim school district for voting upon the levy of a special tax of $3000 to provide addit-
having officers wives aboard. These incidents are mere outcroppings of a corrupt system whose inefficiency was abundantly proven whenever put to the test.
Next Saturday occurs the election in the Anaheim school district for voting upon the levy of a special tax of $3000 to provide additional school facilities for the district. New cement sidewalks are desired at the Central, primary and high school buildings, sanitary closets are needed at the Central school building, as well as repairs to the edifice. Polls will be open from 8 o'clock a.m. until sundown at the Central school building. Make a note of the election, and do your duty by the children. Go to the polls and vote in favor of the tax—it will amount to but a small increase in your taxes. Get your neighbors to do likewise. Do not permit the election to go by default, as sometimes happens in cases of this kind. Go to the polls and vote. And vote for the special tax.
Never despair the Last Straw. Many a poor wretched has grasped at it, just as the last ray of glimmering hope was about to expire, and saved his miserable neck thereby. Look at Colonel Langley.

An occasional word is heard politically. It is conceded by the knowing ones that the supervisor next year rightfully should be an Anaheim man. Buena Park had the honor once, Fullerton has the office now and in all fairness the supervisor ought to be selected from Anaheim next time.
Insurance Commissioner E. Myron Wolf has submitted to Governor Pardee his annual report of that department for the past year. It shows that the total number of companies which were authorized to transact business in the state during the year was 217. Of these 136 were fire and marine companies; 35 legal reserve life insurance companies; 3 assessment life, health and accident insurance companies; 35 miscellaneous insurance companies, and 10 county fire mutuals. The returns indicate that the companies had a very successful year. The only exceptions were in the cases of industrial life, marine and credit indemnity. The former of these shows a greater amount of insurance in force than at the close of the preceding year, so that it also can be said to be in a satisfactory condition. The total premiums received by all the companies during the year amounted to $24,127,539, and the losses paid by them were $8,542,103 15.
The fire companies have collected during the past twenty years $125,170,-851 07, and have paid out in losses $55,968,550 63. The marine companies have collected during the past twenty years $30,950,438 61 and paid out in losses $17,916,700 70. The ordinary life insurance companies have collected $91,514,600 74 and paid out $40,170,-006 55 in losses and endowments. Lott's Rapid Steam Washer
I am very well satisfied with my machine. It does the washing quicker and easier than any machine I have ever tried. It saves wear and tear of clothes to a great extent. Another kind of washer but I seldom used it because I could wash as quickly and easily, and with less labor, with a board. But since I got one of the Steam Washers thrown the board aside and use the machine, for it saves so much labor and time.
