Hazeltine of Smeltzer, manager of the local interests of the Golden West celery and produce company, gives it as his opinion that the most urgent need of the celery industry in this county at the present time is a variety of the vegetable which does not go to seed at the beginning of the spring season, as do those at present grown. Such a variety would prolong the season several weeks, and relieve the congestion experienced in the early part of the shipping. In the hope of securing some such strain of celery, the Golden West company is now conducting thorough experiments with twelve different kinds of plants obtained from various parts of this and foreign countries. The Chinese greentop variety is proving more or less of an experimental success, and gives promise of cultivation as a late variety. The difficulty with this, as with other varieties is to produce pure seed for propagating plants. Now all the pure seed of the Golden Self-blanching variety, which is extensively grown in the peat lands, comes from a single seed farm in France, being marketed in this country by wholesale seedmen. The White Plume seed is grown successfully locally and in other parts of California, many eastern firms obtaining their seed here. Other varieties have been less successfully propagated here.
