In one road district in northern Orange county there are today fifteen miles of roadbed graded, upon which, if these roads are to become of permanent value to the traveling public, oil should be plentifully used; yet there is not a barrel of oil at hand for this purpose, because of a lack of funds. It has cost the taxpayers a lot of money to grade these roads, and now that the work of making them useful and permanent thoroughfares must cease, the incident calls to mind the unbusiness-like methods prevailing in public work. What is true of this particular road district is true of every road district in the county. Here are fifteen miles of roadbed recently graded which will be shunned by travelers on account of the dust and looseness of the ground. Oil applied to them would make it a pleasure to drive over them. There is no gain- No little complaint comes from different sections of the city relative to defective construction sidewalks in the residence district. These complaints are founded on justice, for an inspection of the walks will reveal that poorer work could have been done. Good prices paid by property owners for walks, and good workmanship what they are entitled to. The matter of fact the work seen have been glazed over in total regard of specifications, and walks are breaking up in numerous places. Property should insist upon having matters regulated, and at once. A young man visiting said on his return that he seen Venus and pronounce place out of sight. Well, well hope his best girl will give lesson in pronunciation before goes to the sea again. In order to properly celebrate the week July 24th to 29th sive, each day of which has set apart by the management the Lewis & Clark Exposition one or more cities of Southernifornia, the Los Angeles Chico of Commerce has undertaken arrange a grand excursion made up of “All Southern California” with the object of taking Portland the largest and most vailing in public work. What is true of this particular road district is true of every road district in the county. Here are fifteen miles of roadbed recently graded which will be shunned by travelers on account of the dust and looseness of the ground. Oil applied to them would make it a pleasure to drive over them. There is no gain-saying the fact that good roads make a county. We doubt if there is any other one thing which conduces so much to the upbuilding of rural neighborhoods as well graded and well oiled public thoroughfares. The case may be likened to that of cement sidewalks in town. Streets provided with these walks are sought after by intending purchasers; lots upon them command a higher rate and are easier of sale than on thoroughfares without these indispensable adjuncts to the comfort and convenience of pedestrians. If oil should be applied to these fifteen miles of recently graded roadway, the expense upon them next year would be reduced to a minimum. Apply oil to such thoroughfares two or three years in succession, and thereafter they last for years as splendid driveways with very little cost to the public treasury. Without oil, these roads will require regrading next year; and so the public funds are expended, in work of a temporary rather than permanent character. This is all wrong, as a drive over these dusty thoroughfares will amply demonstrate. Orange county has many miles of fine oiled roads, and the example here set should be followed in all new work. If no oil is available for all the new roads, let only such of them be graded in any one year as may be treated to the oiling pro- sive, each day of which hail set apart by the management of the Lewis & Clark Exposition one or more cities of Southernifornia, the Los Angeles Chambers Commerce has undertaken arrange a grand excursion made up of "All Southern California" with the object of taking Portland the largest and most thusiastic party that has visited Iberia or any other state, allowing in the celebration of other's special day, so that "Southern California Week" will be memorable in the history of fair as well as of the great sights from which we come. Orange county has many miles of fine oiled roads, and the example here set should be followed in all new work. If no oil is available for all the new roads, let only such of them be graded in any one year as may be treated to the oiling process. But, better still, let a small tax for road-making purposes be levied each year to cover the cost of oiling. We have had no rains since March of sufficient volume to settle the dust upon newly graded roads, and with summer upon us, the prospect is not pleasing to those whose business makes it necessary for them to travel over these unoiled thoroughfares. It is to be hoped the water company will not carry out its purpose to erect a warehouse upon its lot in the residence section of Claudina street. A number of new residences have been erected of late upon that thoroughfare, one is now building and others are in prospect. Let the water company dispose of the lot and acquire a site for its warehouse on a business street. What do you think about it, Mr. Hale? Well, well, here's Wm. E.
