CALORNIA SUGAR PINE
Fit to Replace the Best Grades of White Pine
Sers of wood know that on the Coast there is a vast quantity comparable in all essential with the best grades of white pine produced in the East. This lined by the sugar pine, a tree only found along the western side of the Sierra Nevada mountains California. Even when compared with giant "big trees" with which it is found, the sugar pine is not rare, but frequently reaches a height of 10 feet and a height of 250 ft. A single tree has been known to be 3,000 board feet of lumber, and smaller than 18 inches are seldom present. These facts make it clear that sugar pine lumber, in no way the sizes furnished, is far behind eastern white pine—even the pine of early days.
Wood is scarcely distinguishable white pine. It is practically of the weight and the same color. Somewhat more resinous, how-d perhaps a little brasher. It is straight-grained, and easily cut.
It is used for everything for white pine is available, and is highly valuable for pattern work. Wood is already finding its way in Eastern markets, and, while it is all likely that anything but high grades can be shipped long distances, there is no doubt that sugar lumber will more and more re-export relative. There is no joy whatever in furnishing plank your feet in width and absolute-from any defect, at a price that material of that quality.
Out of sugar pine lumber in California has increased from 55,000,000 feet in 1900 to 120,000,000 feet in 1904, and it is estimated that there are 25,000,000,000 feet of it still growing.
Pine does not form extensive by itself, as the white pine of last once did, but grows with westsellow pine, white fir, incense or e.g. of tract of secs 25 and 32 and half of secs 28 and 33, t 3 s, r 9 w.

Cut of sugar pine lumber in Virginia has increased from 55,000-70,000 feet in 1900 to 120,000,000 feet in 1904, and it is estimated that there are 25,000,000,000 feet of it still growing.
Sugar pine does not form extensive stands by itself, as the white pine of most once did, but grows with westslope yellow pine, white fir, incense and the "big trees." In north-california it is found at altitudes between 2000 and 6000 feet above the sea in southern California at altitudes between 5000 and 10,000 feet.
The tree produces a large quantity of nuts, in cones that often are 20 inches long. The seeds are large and fleshy, and consequently are sought after by birds and other animals. The tree also gather them to eat. On account and because the seedlings usually killed during the first five years by lack of moisture or proper care, the sugar pine does not reprotself readily; but the lumber is valuable that there is every reason an effort should be made to reintroduce the trees that are cut down by some of the same kind.
Seau of Forestry studies made of banner of growth indicate that it is entirely possible. A second batch of sugar pine may easily be seeded by affording the forests in which old trees are found reasonable prognosis, and by giving the young ones aid in its struggle with more vigorous competing species.
