The stock of this company was an appurtenance of the land could not be diverted from this company originally incorporated with $20,000 capital stock. Its stock was increased to $50,000 and the ditches extended to what was known as the Ana-extension.
Cajon Irrigation Company's work was completed in November, at a cost of $50,000. It tapped Santa Ana river at Bed Rock and was, at the time of its construction, fifteen miles long. It once been extended. In 1879 Anaheim Water Company had a half interest in this ditch. The water interests on the north of the Santa Ana river have consolidated into the Anaheim Water Company. Anaheim incorporated as a city February 10, but a city government was created a burthen for the people nearby. The legislature of 1872, constitution of the tax-burthened tenants, disincorporated it. It incorporated as a town by act of legislature March 18, 1878. Creating New Forests
California and other Western States have proved the efficacy of irrigation in promoting agriculture, but there are millions of acres of fertile land unused through lack of sufficient water. Much of this land will be reclaimed by the gigantic irrigation works planned by the National Government, but the scope of this work is limited by the amount of water available. The influence of forests in conserving a limited rainfall is recognized, but they are often wanting where most needed. Thus forest planting is often necessary.
An example of what the Bureau of Forestry is doing in this direction is furnished by the nursery which it is establishing 15 miles from Santa Barbara, in Southern California. This is the fourth forest nursery which the Bureau has established.

within western forest reserves. Nowhere in California is water needed more than in the coast plain east and southeast of Santa Barbara. To cover large areas with new tree growth, however, in regions where the forest can not naturally restore itself, is a difficult matter. Unless great care is used in the selection of species and in the cultural methods employed, the work is likely to prove a failure. Methods which would succeed on a small plantation are impracticable on a large scale on account of the expense.
The nursery in the Santa Barbara Reserve will be planted with seed of trees likely to flourish in that region. Coulter and yellow pine will be most largely planted. The seedlings will be ready to transplant to their permanent locations two years hence.
The first attempt at reforesting will be made on the upper watershed of the Santa Ynez River, which supplies the town of Santa Barbara with water. This town of only 16,000 inhabitants is spending $600,000 to secure a good water supply. A dam and reservoir for this purpose

be most largely placed in lings will be ready to transplant to their permanent locations two years hence.
The first attempt at reforesting will be made on the upper watershed of the Santa Ynez River, which supplies the town of Santa Barbara with water. This town of only 16,000 inhabitants is spending $600,000 to secure a good water supply. A dam and reservoir for this purpose are now under construction. The Santa Ynez watershed is now bare or poorly covered with chaparral. A good forest growth is necessary, both to conserve the water and to prevent the washing down of silt, which if unchecked would eventually fill and ruin the reservoir.
The success of the transplanting will depend largely upon the season. In excessively dry years good results can not be expected, and the Bureau must take advantage of a wet season. Preparations for the transplanting will be begun immediately, so that quick work can be done the first favorable season after the seedlings are old enough.
In the whole of the Santa Barbara Forest Reserve, which contains nearly two million acres, there are only two groves of any size. There is, therefore, a large opportunity for the extension of the work of tree planting, if it proves successful.
In Nebraska the Bureau of Forestry has demonstrated its ability to solve the same kind of difficulties with which it is confronted in California, and has successfully established forest plantations at an extremely low cost. If it can do the

HELP TOWARD SUCCESS.
"It Hol' Up Yo' Haid, Honey, an' Step Out Sassy."
For generations the Randolph Jefferson had been celebrated for the beauty and charm of their women. Betty Jefferson had been declared the most beautiful woman at the governor's ball, Betty's daughter had been the niece of three counties, and Betty's granddaughters—three of them, at least—claimed the family reputation as matter of course. The fourth one, Virginia, was different. She was plain shy and awkward. The Jeffersons always looked puzzled when they thought of her, a homely Jefferson was with a strange misfit.
While Virginia lived her shy, lonely life, she alien among her own people. Yet she was not quite alone either. One friend she had, old Aunt Charlotte, so fought desperately to make the conquer her fate instead of yielding to it.
"Tain't yo' pearance, Miss Vagin'" she urged day in and day out. It's Jes' 'cause yo' 'lows things terrible on yo'. Hol' up yo' haid, honey, so step out sassy. Dat'll fotch 'em ev'y wise."
While Virginia was still a young girl she war swept over the south. For a few years the family contrived to keep together, but at last it was necessary for them to separate, and Virginia went to cousins in Philadelphia, who were confident that they could help her to music pupils. The weeks that followed were crowded with agony for the homesick girl. If she had been shy home, she was a thousand timesorse facing strangers. It was not strange that only failure followed her efforts.
One day she went to see a Mrs. Densmore, who had three little daughters, or whom she wanted a music teacher.
Summer Session
The Summer Session of the University of California opened Monday, June 26. It is expected that not less than one thousand students will this year avail themselves of the opportunities for summer study offered by the University. The major portion of these will be enrolled for the courses at Berkeley, while several hundred will take the work in surveying and railroad engineering provided at the University's summer surveying camp near Santa Cruz.
The distinguished scholars who are coming from various eastern and foreign universities to spend six weeks in lecturing at Berkeley are now gathering at the University.
The presidents of all the California State normal schools, Messrs. Samuel T. Black, Erederick Burk, Morris Elmer Dailey, J. F. Millspaugh, and Charles C. Van Liew, will each spend a week at Berkeley lecturing on practical educational problems.
A novelty in the instruction will be courses in domestic science, including the care of the home and scientific cookery.
HUGE TASK
It was a huge task to undertake the cure of such a bad case of kidney disease as that of C. F. Collier, of Cherokee, Ia., but Electric Bitters did it. He writes: "My kidneys were so far gone, I could not sit on a chair without a cushion; and I suffered from dreadful backache, headache and depression. In Electric Bitters, however, I found a cure, and by them was resored to perfect health. I recommend this great tonic medicine to all with weak kidneys liver or stomach." Guaranteed by W. B. White Fir Pulp
Washington, June 22.-July 1, three experts of forest service will go to California to make a study, in co-operation with that State, of white fir, to determine the practicability of its use for wood pulp. White fir is at present a little-used tree, and if it will furnish good wood pulp this new demand will greatly extend the use of the forest in the regions where it grows. The field work will be under the immediate direction of P. D. Kelleter.
Samples of white fir will also be collected and sent to the laboratory of the Bureau of Forestry at New Haven.
One day she went to see a Mrs. Densmore, who had three little daughters, whom she wanted a music teacher. For various reasons Virginia really hoped for success there, but the result was the usual polite regret. The girl's eyes filled with tears, and she bowed gently; then suddenly, to the lady's surprise, she began to laugh nervously.
"I—I beg your pardon," she stammered, meeting the look in the other's face. "I was just thinking of the advice of my old mammy at home—'Hol' yo' haid an' step out sassy.' I suppose—I ought to have thought of that first."
To Virginia's amazement, Mrs. Densmore turned and motioned her back to her seat.
"If you don't mind, Miss Jefferson," he said, "we will talk this over a little more. To tell you the truth, it was our evident lack of self confidence that made me distrust your ability to teach, but if you can 'step out sassy'," and ten minutes later Virginia left with her first pupils secured.
Many years after she told the story and declared it the turning point of her life. "I learned," she said, "that the first step toward success is to learn 'hol' up yo' haid.'"—Youth's Companion.
