The Probate Judge, who is prohibited from marrying cousins, has it figured out this way: If the father and mother are half-brother and half-sister, then, it would appear, they are only half-uncle and half-aunt of the parties desiring a marriage license, and this would make them half-cousins if anything. The law does not permit first cousins to marry, but does permit second cousins to be joined in wedlock. As these persons are less than full cousins, it would appear that they have a legal right to get married, and the Probate Judge so informed the young man. He did not get the license yesterday, but no doubt will when he applies for it. The Perugia takes out a shipment that appears to be unprecedented in the history of the Mediterranean trade. It consists of 250 barrels of California wine, destined for Marseilles. This looks a good deal like "carrying coals to Newcastle" or bananas to Jamaica, but the shipment is there all the same. There is small doubt that this domestic wine will find its way back here with some wonderful label on the bottoms. Marseilles has the reputation of being able to convert goods more scientifically than any other port in the world. Uses Counted Ties; Gets Damages York, June 14.—A jury in Jus-schoff's department of the Su-Court today returned a verdict in favor of Miss Adelaide Clifford against the Denver and Rio de la Railroad Co. Clifford is an actress, and has connected with many well known companies. Last season she was used with De Wolf Hopper in "," and the injuries for which he just been awarded damages sustained while walking the ties defendant's railroad. In this statement it must not be said that the actress was stranded, broke," nor was she without a to take her to her destination. Hummel, her counsel, told the why it was that the actress was using the ties." Clifford was traveling withtera company from Creede toosa, Colo., said Hummel. At 3 o'clock in the morning the pulled into Alamosa, but did not days' pay. Although the young woman made no complaint of Langdon, the fact that she seemed displeased at the clerk's advances induced a witness of the affair to make representations to Secretary Shaw in Washington. Langdon, a month ago, met the girl on an elevated train, smiled at her, and thinking himself encouraged, dropped his card into her lap. The girl tore the card into small bits and threw the pieces on the floor. The incident was noticed by a passenger, who gathered the pieces together and learned Langdon's identity. The card, its pieces pasted together, was sent to Secretary Shaw, with an account of the incident. No name was attached to the communication, but the writer declared that he was acting in the interest of unprotected American womanhood. He said that measures to punish the offending clerk should be taken. Langdon confessed that he had smiled at the girl, but with innocent intention. He was at once fined ten days' pay.
