NORTH AMERICA. Originally Mapped as an Extension of India and China. "Uneducated Americans," says a correspondent of the London Times, "pronounce the name of their country Amarica, calling themselves Amarians. In so doing they not only yield to a natural craving for a finer euphony, but, quite accidentally, I presume, are more correct etymologically than educated Americans, Amerigo being the Italian form of the Gothic Amalaric, contracted to Amaric. This personal name means 'strenuous in labor, resolute in action,' an appropriate motto to add to the Washington armorial in the national device of 'America.'" "Brazil was the original America. Down to the first quarter of the sixteenth century our North America was still mapped as an extension of India. Tibet, China and Japan, with Brazil as an island, separated by the islands discovered by Columbus from 'the new world of Greater India' and named 'America provincia' and again 'America vel Brasilia.'" "Not before the middle of the sixteenth century was the term 'America' extended to North America, with the addition 'vel Nova India.' In brief, the Americas were both mere windfalls in the heroic secular quest after 'spiced' India. This is the redoubled debt the Anglo-Saxon race owes India." Striped Suit; Lively Walk. Once in my callow days I accepted a wager that I could wear a prison suit and walk from Buffalo to Cleveland without serious molestation. It took me over four days to get thirty miles. I was arrested nine times, and at Dunkirk I came near being mobbed by a Sunday school picnic and was compelled to discard my uniform for citizen's clothes. Yet I was a free man and innocent of crime, and there was no law defining what I should wear so long as it was male attire. — Elbert Hubbard in Philistine. How's This? A husband can scarcely show his wife too much kindness. But sometimes real kindness may be shown in opposing her wishes. If the husband has any mind of his own he must use it. He need not be mean in his opposition nor arrogant nor tyrannical. He should be reasonable at all times and disposed to highly regard the expressed wishes of his wife even though these wishes may seem to him to be whimsical or capricious. But— Kindness does not require subserviency or entire and instant surrender of opinion. Indeed, it is easy to see how such surrender might lead a wife to despise her husband. He who fetches and carries like a poodle is likely to be considered a poodle. Women admire strength in a man. This strength need not necessarily be physical, though that is desirable. Women love strength of character in a man. And— Is it not so, ladies? HUGE TASK Indeed, it is easy to see how such surrender might lead a wife to despise her husband. He who fetches and carries like a poodle is likely to be considered a poodle. Women admire strength in a man. This strength need not necessarily be physical, though that is desirable. Women love strength of character in a man. And— Is it not so, ladies? When a woman coaxes a strong man to her point of view by strenuous endeavor, does she not regard it as merit to have influenced this big, strong being? If she gains her own way at once and at all times she has achieved nothing, and there is no rejoicing in her heart. Certainly a man should be kind to his wife—always kind. But he need not be an automaton or an echo or a plaything. Is it not so, ladies?—Albany Times-Union. ARMSBY COMPANY, SAN FRANCISCO The Acrobatic Gibbon. A great ape which makes its home in Borneo is the gibbon, which is a small animal compared with the orang, weighing only about forty or fifty pounds. It is very frail in its bodily makeup. The head is set squarely on the shoulders, and it looks upward. When walking on the ground it balances itself along like a walker on a tight rope. Its remarkable power of grasp and dexterity in using its hands are equally with the shape of its cranium indexes of its superior intelligence, perhaps because it is able to take hold of a greater number of things and examine them. The gibbons go in droves, whereas orangs live by families, and one of the most interesting spectacles imaginable is to see a troop of them crossing a great gap in the forest by throwing themselves in succession through the air, each one taking a swing or two to gather momentum before launching himself. So great is their agility that in executing feats of this sort they seem like birds. A Cordial Welcome. The first demand that the association in charge of New York foundlings had to meet was for a baby girl between one and two years of age with blue eyes, curly hair, dimple in chin, etc. A number of hospitals and asylums were canvassed, and finally Randall's Island produced a sole survivor eight months old who had a number of the requisite traits. The candidate was visited and pronounced worthy, the home up the river found to be all that could be desired, and on a stated afternoon the agent took the train with her charge. As she alighted at the station she noticed an unusual gathering of people, which was promptly explained by a shout: "There she is! There is Mrs. Blank's baby!" The entire village had gathered to offer a welcome.—Everybody's Magazine. When Leather Was Money. When Leather Was Money. Leather was very early used as a currency, the Romans employing it for this purpose before either gold, silver or brass came into common use. History is full of references showing that leather was used by the ancients as a sort of circulating medium of exchange. It is said on good authority that so late as during the reign of Louis XII. of France the country became so impoverished and as a consequence money was so scarce that little pieces of leather with a small silver nail driven through each were in general use as money. Some few specimens of this leather money are still in existence, but are only to be found in the possession of numismatists, by whom they are highly prized. Cultivate Your Wife's Friendship. If a man has a good wife he has the best friend it is possible to have. "A man's best friend," says Bulwer Lytton, "is a wife of good sense and good heart, whom he loves and who loves him. In woman there are at once a subtle delicacy of tact and a plain soundness of judgment which are rarely combined to an equal degree in a man. A woman, if she be really your friend, will have a sensitive regard for your character, honor and repute. She will seldom counsel you to do a shabby thing, for a woman always desires to be proud of you. At the same time her constitutional timidity makes her more cautious than your male friend. She therefore seldom counsels you to do an imprudent deed." How It Happened. An English lawyer was cross examining the plaintiff in a breach of promise case. "Was the defendant's air when he promised to marry you perfectly serious or one of jocularity?" he inquired. "If you please, sir," was the reply, "it was all ruffled with 'im a-runnin' 'is 'ands through it." "You misapprehend my meaning," said the lawyer. "Was the promise made in utter sincerity?" A man wanted a ticket to Olathe and had only a two dollar bill. It required $3 to get the ticket. He took the two dollar bill to a pawnshop and pawned it for $1.50. On his way back to the station he met a friend, to whom he sold the pawn ticket for $1.50. That gave him $3. Now, who's out that dollar?—Kansas City Star. Try. "I cannot do it" never accomplished anything. "I will try" has wrought wonders. Men's Vanity.
