Transient advertising $1 per inch per month The GAZETTE is issued every Thursday morning. Entered at the Anaheim Postoffice as second-class matter. The L. P. HEALTHFUL PROGRESS The city of Anaheim is just completing the laying of five miles of cement sidewalk and curbing at a cost of $18,000. The city trustees have instructed the city surveyor to make surveys and plans and specifications for approximately seven miles of more cement sidewalk and curbing, the approximate cost of which will be $25,000. The total cost of brick buildings now in course of erection and in immediate prospect exceeds $100,-000, and the cost of new residences built in the past year and now under way will probably equal this figure. The city has two banks in operation, and a third, with a capital stock of $50,000 in course of organ-problem as she finds it. The licenses orderly places who are sold; these place and strict police control; disobey of ordinance regulations requirefeiture of license; and imposes a good stiff monetize upon the traffic. We no tinhorn gamblers - games of chance, no idle solute characters; there is no for such here. We do adhere we license a limited number derly places where the wayfarer, newly arrived from over the burning sand find opportunity for the week his whistle. If he becomes cated and boisterous, we play under arrest, lock him up, fand have fun with him. SANTA ANA's treasury is be in rocky condition, we funds in sight until taxes owe and as a result the autohave decided to retrench expenditures. The price water will be raised from the imum figure of $10 per m³ $1 50, and street lighting pensed with except in the b center. Meantime the city $15,000 shy on liquor while no one will pretend that consumption of liquor unabated. The city seems a sorry plight, and the only edy seems to be increased The total cost of brick buildings now in course of erection and in immediate prospect exceeds $100,-000, and the cost of new residences built in the past year and now under way will probably equal this figure. The city has two banks in operation, and a third, with a capital stock of $50,000 in course of organization. The First National bank has deposits approximating $300,-000. During the year a lumber yard, savings bank, gas works, grist mill, two oil plants—the Standard Oil and Puente—have established themselves here; and a number of other new business houses have opened here; the cost of all of which is in excess of $100,000. During the coming summer the city will issue bonds in the amount of $75,000 for the extension of the city lighting and water service. The municipality is unable at the present time to supply the demands for water and light, and as a result of the town's expansion a new and greatly enlarged plant will be installed. This coming fall the Anaheim Union Water company will issue bonds in the amount of $400,000 for the construction of a reservoir, to supply Anaheim farmers with more water, and to complete its present irrigating system. During the past five years the farmers within a radius of three miles of this city have expended $500,000 for pumping plants, and this expenditure continues at a rate of $100,000 per year. This section has in excess of 200 pumping plants, costing not less than $2500 each. Hardly a week goes by that we do not hear of a new plant being installed. These are a few items to refute the oft-repeated statement of Dr. this expenditure continues at a rate of $100,000 per year. This section has in excess of 200 pumping plants, costing not less than $2500 each. Hardly a week goes by that we do not hear of a new plant being installed. These are a few items to refute the oft-repeated statement of Dr. Chapman, the advance agent of the blind pig, that "Anaheim is a dead town," because it believes in high license in preference to prohibition. Anaheim is far from meriting the castigation it receives from this white-haired old gentleman—very far from it. It points to this record of progress, and challenges comparison anywhere in Southern California. We have heard a great deal of late about prohibition being the means of upbuilding a state. How fares Pomona under prohibition, and how is it with Santa Ana, both of which places are retrenching in their municipal expenditures, their streets in bad condition, lighting service poor, and no money in the treasury to meet municipal demands. This brings on the alternative of higher taxes, the burden of which the business man and property-owner must bear. And is the sale of liquor thereby lessened? We doubt it very much. We are not preaching a sermon in defense of the saloon; we simply say Anaheim deals with the liquor or five of them, began the men went the air, but came down all no bones were broken, and handcar was not so badly wilt that the interrupted journey soon again begun. A bad act was narrowly averted. For carelessness the men were given "Brownies"; fifty of them tantamount to a discharge. Clerk Lester has 47 Brownies the boys say that in the rise of next year's scalp fest he will all that's coming to him." Jimmy's Remarkable Story A school teacher who was given lesson on "Food" was interrupt one of his pupils. "James ought not to tell you rubbish," the teacher said. whose baby was it that was brought on elephant's milk? "Please, sir," answered Jimmy was the elephant's."" The city seems to be in light, and the only remit to be increased taxes, be bold; have confidence in yourselves; get married." Sir Edward Clarke has said much the same thing: but Mr. Justice Maule, when giving advice on the same point, declared that there were only three things essential. "The first is high animal spirits, the second is high animal spirits, and the third is high animal spirits." But he added, "If, in addition, the young man will take the trouble to learn a little law, I do not think it will impede his progress in the profession."—London World. School Census Figures The Press has just completed its annual compilation of school census figures. The totals are given below for all the leading cities and towns outside of Los Angeles, compared in most cases with those for 1904. The figures are for children of school age—5 to 17. All towns reporting 400 children or more are included: 1905 1904 Pasadena 4549 4027 San Diego 4151 3789 Long Beach 3324 2560 Riverside 2851 2723 San Bernardino 2364 2397 Santa Barbara 2203 2154 Redlands 1999 1998 Santa Monica 1857 1557 Santa Ana 1656 1652 Pomona 1639 1600 San Pedro 863 778 Ontario 838 860 Whittier 740 714 Anaheim 721 720 Colton 709 571 Ventura 664 722 Orange 622 646 Oxnard 539 580 Monrovia 485 463 Alhambra 449 For a Short Time of fine Felt Hats, their uniform price of These are broken them out entirely we have there been offered such EVERYBODY. The highest average ratio that it is safe to figure on for population from the school census is one to four. And this must be for the children from 5 to 17, and not for all children. Some newspapers get astonishing figures by taking all the children and multiplying by five. A comparison of the federal census for 1900 with the school census for that year, shows that four is plenty high as a ratio in all cases except San Diego. Using four as a multiple, the population figures are: Pasadena.....18,196 San Diego.....16,604 Long Beach.....13,296 Riverside.....11,404 San Bernardino.....9,456 Santa Barbara.....8,812 Redlands.....7,996 Santa Monica.....7,428 Santa Ana.....6,624 Pomona.....6,556 San Pedro.....3,452 Ontario.....3,352 Whittier.....2,960 Anaheim.....2,884 Colton.....2,836 Ventura.....2,656 Orange.....2,488 Oxnard.....2,156 Monrovia.....1,940 Alhambra.....1,796 South Pasadena.....1,792 Needles.....1,772 Santa Paula.....1,648 Covina.....1,620 We have this year another basis of compiling population and that is to compare the school census of 1905 with that of 1900, which was taken at nearly the same time as the Federal census. them, began their jourping the handcar at a accelerated speed. The figures for the ten large towns follow: Gain 1900 1905 Pet. We believe this estimate of population is more correct than those obtained by multiplying the school census by four, except in the case of Pasadena. We should regard 16,000 or 18,000 as about the correct figures there, in view of the annexation of North Pasadena.
