Wonderful Flights of the Albatross
Of all the strange creatures seen by travelers not the least interesting is the wandering albatross. This great, feathered wanderer, sometimes measuring seventeen feet from tip to tip of its wings, will follow a ship for days at a time. Some travelers and sailors declare that they have seen a particular bird fly for weeks at a time without ever being seen to alight upon the waves.
It not merely follows the ship, but wheels in great circles around it and above it, high in the air, as if to show that it is not tired. Sometimes the bird will be seen to hang in the air with its wings apparently motionless, and the sailors say that then it is asleep.
Not only in pleasant weather will the albatross follow a ship for days and weeks, but through the most terrific storms it will continue its untiring flights. In fact, to find an albatross otherwise than on the wing is like finding a weasel asleep.

The albatross follow a ship for days and weeks, but through the most terrific storms it will continue its untiring flights. In fact, to find an albatross otherwise than on the wing is like finding a weasel asleep.
Once a year the female albatross flies away a few thousand miles to the great, lonely island rock of Tristan d’Acunha, which lifts its desolate head far in the south Atlantic, or to some equally remote place, and there lays one egg in the hollow of a rock.
The albatross has always been a bird of mystery, and in ancient times the people believed that these unwearying sea birds were the companions of the Greek warrior Diomedes, who were said to have been changed into birds at the death of their chief.
When America was discovered and ships began to sail abroad to the Pacific ocean, to double the Cape of Good Hope and to explore the “seven seas” generally, the old belief about the albatross had been forgotten by the sailors and explorers, but in their long and lonesome voyages over waters which were cut by no keel but their own and upon whose vast expanse they saw no other sail but theirs, the presence of the albatross following the ship day after day became a great source of comfort and companionship. So it came to be a belief that ill luck would follow any one who killed one of these birds, and that belief is common among seafaring men of this very day. Coleridge’s famous “Rhyme of the bird will be seen to hang in the air with its wings apparently motionless, and the sailors say that then it is asleep.

and the half civilized beasts that control him are forcing unfortunate peasants to go into battle against their will and without decent direction, arms,
provisions or medical care. Don't think that the Japanese are superior to the Russian because they beat them.
The Russian nation is far above the Japanese in mental power and in future possibilities—as the Japanese are above the Malays. No man could fight well with a dead animal slung around his neck. Russia fights against her will with a dead thing called the czar fastened to her and with a lot of thievish maggots attacking her through the czar. The people of Russia are a very great people. The genius of their writers is more marked today than that of any other race, for they are coming up where many others are going down. The Russian woman is among the brainiest and ablest of the world. Individually her courage excels that of any other woman, for there is more in her country's misery to call it out. The Russian nation will renew the love of liberty and stimulate the real rule of the people in this world as soon as it shall have thrown away the dead beast that hangs to it, and educates a little more the great mass of the people. Even the ignorant classes in Russia have shown wonderful qualities in this war. They have done all that brain can do when they have no leadership. They have fought stubbornly and died without complaining. Give such men leaders and the inspiration of liberty and no force will resist them. Fortunately they cannot do their real work until liberty shall give them power and therefore the czar cannot use them to make himself master of the world or even of the corner of it he oppresses deliberately and viciously. The Russia peasants have been kept ignorant that they might the more easily be kept slaves. When
Pier Charge for the Mangy Czar from Commodore Henry
FOR GAZETTE.—I have read in reading papers of the state a speech by Emperor William of Germany member of his naval and military wherein he said that the Japanese a scourge of God. The way it led a great many people do not stand it. We all know the meaning of the word "scourge." It meansance from God. If he had said Russia it would have been much better, but that is what he meant. He warned these young men to take a good Christian to make a soldier; but he does not take stock in Buddhism—only in the Jesus Crist. Now, I have sailed for the world and have seen travels a great many different kinds of people and they all recognize being greater than themselves have three different ways of working. Now I would ask the question Who knows who is right? My son is we will all get there if we meet the example of the Japs. They hold and honor their emperor.
Wait, let me re-read line 1: "waiting very earnestly to hear great sea fight to take place against Admiral Rojestvensky gets through hiding and go seek. The brave sailor of Japan will I hope annihilate whole Russian fleet. That is honest wish. Don’t judge Russia or mangle czar. Japan is not doing the Russian people. She is using a wornout nest of cheap aristocracy. The beating of Russia by Japan isorious thing for the world. With victorious the liberty of Sweden Norway would have been mainly at the cost of desperate fighting, if at all. Sweden undergoing this, and warned by the czar’s advice in Finland, has multiplied the stubbornly and died without complaining. When Madame Breshkowski, one of Russia’s noblest and brainiest victims, was found giving bibles to the peasants she was told that she had convicted herself of conspiracy against the czar.
Don’t you know that the New Testament is full of revolutionary doctrines and would make the peasants think themselves as good as anybody. Let them get their religion through our paid channels. Japan is beating Russia, educating Russia and advancing the world civilization at the same time. When the Russian people come to manage their own affairs another story will be told. May the beginning of it come soon. Suppose that a few generations from now this country should be ruled absolutely by the washed-out descendant of some one of our most worthless and dissipated would-be aristocrat? Suppose such a person was controlled by sharpers and should plunge this nation into war with rampant military thievery and incompetent leadership. What chance would we have? That is Russia’s plight. The descendent of vice, murder and tyranny is trying to be a leader. Don’t judge Russia by his failure.

Don’t judge Russia or mangy czar. Japan is not engaging the Russian people. She is facing a wornout nest of cheap aristocracy. The beating of Russia by Japan is serious thing for the world. With victorious the liberty of Sweden and Norway would have been maintained only at the cost of desperate fighting, if at all. Sweden undergoing this, and warned by the czar’s army in Finland, has multiplied the number of her army by twenty within a few years. Russian victory in would have meant eventually an uprising the civilization of western Europe for a hundred years. The set-back only half secret policy of Russia has been expansion toward the with final achievement of that domination tried in vain by various battles of past times.
World owes much to little Japanese lesson she has taught it; it is an lesson; the young Greek nation it to Persia with her autocrat as the czar, and the northern Indians taught it to Rome, when real and courage of the Romans to find national expression. We learn the lesson to England with her George the Third. Germany learns it to France when a decayed fried to play the Napoleon and presented the French people uncontrolled of a Spanish petticoat. The lesson Russia is learning. You cannot win victories unless part of the people is in the fight there is where the Jap’s heart is. Your heart is not in this foolish and cruel quarrel. The Japanese are doing not the Russian people, but a nation of degraded, dissipated, viciously, scrofulous and decayed out of its present location this week, the building will be torn down in order to make room for the new Odd Fellows building, work upon which will begin on the first.
