Greatest Gusher
Advices from Olinda are to the effect that the gusher brought in last week on the Hall lease is turning out to be the greatest gusher in the western oil fields. It commenced flowing Sunday, May 14, at 9 a.m., and the first twenty-four hours gushed 22,000 barrels of 21 per cent gravity oil. Its only rival is a Santa Maria well, which flowed only 10,000 barrels a day.
The well has a tremendous gas pressure. Boulders weighing from four to five pounds are thrown up through the casing like a shot from a gun, and hundreds of tons of sand are being sent up with terrific force. The spray from the well has been falling on houses nearly a mile away, ruining bedding and clothing in many homes. Letters are soiled by the fine spray while being removed from rural route boxes, hundreds of feet from the great well.
Several large ground reservoirs have been constructed and they are all full of oil from the great gusher except one, which is estimated to hold over 100,000 barrels. Although the oil stream is today held much closer to the ground by means of the heavy timbers, there seems to be no let-up to the output, still estimated at 20,000 barrels a day. The wonderful gusher is 2400 feet deep and will net the owners tens of thousands of dollars, as it is said all of the oil produced will find an active sale at 55 cents a barrel.

Orphans
Anaheim, April 11th, 1905.
The following boys have been admitted into St. Catherine's Orph. since the last publication:
Whole Orphans—Emmanuel Reed aged 9 years, Manuel Gallon aged 8 years.
Half Orphans—Harry Horan aged 8 years 10 months, Joseph Horan aged 8 years, Alexander Secundorf aged 7 yrs, Carlos Vejar aged 8 yrs, Leopoldo Vejar aged 6 yrs, Alfonso Vejar aged 9 yrs, Ignacio Ortega aged 8 yrs, Willie Krusse aged 5 yrs.
A preacher out in Kansas is responsible for this: "I had occasion at one time to hold christian services in a little town not far from Topeka. The choir was composed of two old maids and two old bachelors. When the chorus to the official Christmas hymn was reached the old maids alone sang 'Unto us a child was born,' and the old bachelors followed up with 'W-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l, w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l.' Then some wag in the front pew had to snicker. That settled it. The choir quit abruptly and the services came to an end."
