During national campaigns the book of the treasurer and manager are kept in a peculiar way. Instead of entering accounts by name each account given a number and is thus carried throughout the campaign. The key to this legendary system is known to two or three trusted men, and the accountants who keep the books have not the slightest knowledge of what state committee or other organization or individual stands behind the number. After the campaign is over the books are burned, and all the records except possibly some private memoranda kept by the manager, are wiped out of existence. Such a thing as auditing of campaign expenditures never known and probably never be known so far as national campaigns are concerned. Everything is trustworthy to the honor of the responsible man and I have never heard that any of the managers of a national campaign were suspected of betrayal of the trust in any way.—Walter Wellman Success. Old Hickory. Many explanations have been given as to the sobriquet "Old Hickory" applied to Andrew Jackson. There an older explanation than that suggested by James Parton in his life Jackson—that the title was evolved from progressive adjectives, starting with "tough" as applied to his endurance as a walker. A Place of Great Heat. The largest of the Aval islands which are scattered over a considerable area in the Persian gulf, is said to be earth's hottest place. The mean temperature of Bahrein, as it is called, is 99 degrees for the whole year. No European can endure the heat, which midnight rises to 100, in the morning 107 or 108 and by 3 in the afternoon reaches the phenomenal height of 109 degrees. The island is inhabited Arabs. The following high temperatures are also experienced at the places named: Parts of Algeria, 127 degrees Agra, 117 degrees, and Lahore, 107 degrees. The Joke Turned.
