In the early history of the government, when our population was small and the lands were located upon as a source of revenue for mining the national machinery, they may have been some excuse for posing of them in large tracts, but rapidly growing sentiment soon indicated the advisability of securing permanent population on all land disposed of, finally culminating the passage of the homestead act. While the operation of this general policy has been to satisfactorily settle up much of the United States along with it has flourished a practice of fraud and evasion of law which has consolidated enormous tracts into single ownerships. The government be repossessed this great area acquired largely speculative purposes, what a safe value it would form today against the dangers of centralization in east with which we are coming to face. There is little use, h GERMANIA HALL BACK'S NEW BUILDING LOS ANGELES STREET Keeps on hand a Large and complete stock of liquors, wines and cigars. Cold beer alwayon draught. McKAUGHASTand at Blacksmith Shop model farms, under the so-called Campbell soil culture system, in the semi arid region, which have already demonstrated that lands heretofore supposed to be fit only for grazing are capable of extensive agriculture. The Union Pacific and the Santa Fe lines have also recently followed this lead and taken up the subject and it is expected that they will carry into operation similar projects for the development of their tributary country. Our present system of national education takes little if any account of practical agriculture, yet the successful farmer of today, as is coming to be more and more generally recognized, must possess some technical knowledge of his business, more than his father or his grandfather knew. The keen competition which has invaded farming as well as commercial occupations makes imperative the introduction into our educational system of practical farm studies if American farmers are to maintain their supremacy in competition with other classes, or if American agriculture is to continue to lead the world. In some districts the financial loss was considerable, where vegetable crops were damaged, and wherever the overflow occurred there was serious inconvenience. One Talbert rancher suggests the practicability of a bond issue by the county to make a secure levee. From another source comes the proposition of incorporating a district where the overflow occurs and levying upon this for building the necessary runway for the storm water. Governor Pardee has accepted the resignation of Guy B. Barham, long in the hands of the governor. N. B. Blackstock of Ventura has already been appointed a state bank commissioner to fill the place made vacant by Barham’s resignation. Former bank commissioner Magee of Pasadena was an applicant for the place. Barham was appointed bank commissioner by Former Governor Gage, and his appointment was confirmed by Gov. Pardee at the second year of his service. Barham was elected-president of the commission. He resigns because of personal business. A DAREDEVIL RIDE. often ends in a sad accident. To heal accidental injuries use Bucklen's Arnica Salve. "A deep wound in my foot from an accident," writes Theodore Schuele of Columbus, O. "caused me great pain. Physicians were helpless, but Bucklen's Arnica Salve quickly healed it." Soothes and heals burns like magic. 25c at Hutchinson, druggist. It is a medicine, not a cheap food or condition powder. Though put up in coarser form than Thedford's Black-Draught, renowned for the cure of the digestion troubles of persons, it has the same qualities of invigorating digestion, stirring up the torpid liver and loosening the constipated bowels for all stock and poultry. It is carefully prepared and its action is so healthful that stock grow and thrive with an occasional dose in their food. It cures hog cholera and makes hogs grow fat. It cures chicken cholera and roup and makes hens lay. It cures constipation, distemper and colds in horses, murrain in cattle, and makes a draught animal do more work for the food consumed. It gives animals and fowls of all kinds new life. Every farmer and raiser should certainly give it a trial. It costs 25c. a can and saves ten times its price in profit.
