MAN WITH CLOVEN HOOF

When It Came to a Showdown
Between Amerige and
Estudillo, Anderson
Sided with Latter
The Riverside Press trots out with
a lengthy defense of Senator Anderson's buck-ague of the walnut industry, saying he is "deserving of high praise for his straightforward, honorable and mainly course," in permitting Estudillo to wean him away from Assemblyman Amerige of this county. Editor Clark speaks of the man with the cloven hoof as follows:
"The Anaheim Gazette make a most unfair and unreasonable attack on Senator John N. Anderson because he supported the Estudillo bill rather than the Amerige bill for a citrus experiment station.
"The fact is that the two bills were exactly alike word for word, except on the matter of the location of the station or stations. The Amerige bill said: 'In the most representative citrus and walnut district of the state.' The Estudillo bill said 'In one of the seven southern counties of the state.'"
"The Amerige bill was gotten out of committee first and Assemblyman Estudillo went to the Orange county assemblyman and said: 'Here, this is not a fair proposition. Your bill makes it practically impossible contemplated under the be done."

bill said: 'In the most representative citrus and walnut district of the state.' The Estudillo bill said 'In one of the seven southern counties of the state.'
"The Amerige bill was gotten out of committee first and Assemblyman Estudillo went to the Orange county assemblymaa and said: "Here, this is not a fair proposition. Your bill makes it practically impossible for the station to be located anywhere except in Orange county."
That was true, for no other county would fill the requirements of this ingeniously worded measure. Amerige said that was all right, he would have the bill amended in that particular section. But he never did; and Estudillo then got in, hustled his bill out of committee and got it through the assembly. The result of the rivalry between the assemblymen from Riverside and Orange was that both bills passed the assembly and were sent over to the senate. And it was then up to Senator Anderson to choose between the two.
"The Estudillo bill was fair to all Southern California. It gave every one of the southern counties an equal show. The Amerige bill was virtually a cinch for Orange. Senator Anderson took the broad view that he was the senator of both Riverside and Orange counties and that it was therefore his duty to favor the Estudillo bill, which gave both counties an equal show. This he did and the bill passed the senate and has been signed by the governor. We do not see how, in fairness to the two counties, both anxious to secure this station, Senator Anderson could have done otherwise and he is deserving of high praise for his straightforward, honorable and manly course.
"The bill provides for a pathological laboratory and also for a branch agricultural experiment station or stations. The laboratory and the citrus experiment station or stations may be located at different points. In fact, two experimental citrus farms located under different conditions would be desirable and one

The bill provides for a pathological laboratory and also for a branch agricultural experiment station or stations. The laboratory and the citrus experiment station or stations may be located at different points. In fact, two experimental citrus farms located under different conditions would be desirable and one could be located where field experiments could also be conducted with walnuts. The appropriation is limited and all that is desired cannot be done the first two years. But a start will be made, and it is quite likely that work may be done at two or more points. Both Riverside and Orange county may therefore secure something.
"The movement for this law started in Riverside, and the work in its behalf from beginning to end has largely been done by Riversiders. But Riverside has worked in this matter for all Southern California. We never asked that the bill be framed so as to favor Riverside, though this is the recognized center of the citrus fruit industry. We have always been willing to take our chances with a fair commission on the location of the station or stations. We were working for the fruit interests of Southern California; and we shall make no kick when once the commission has decided on the place or places where the work
complated under this bill shall be done.

Benefit for Modjeska
Paderewski, who is filling an engagement in New York, is planning a benefit for Helena Modjeska who has been living in retirement for the last year. Announcement of Paderewski's intention has created great astonishment. Modjeska, during her career, has made a fortune, and only recently she has received enormous offers for her appearance in vaudeville. She has steadily refused these, however.
Paderewski has telegraphed to Chicago asking Sembrich to take part in the entertainment. Paderewski's idea is to give a benefit on May 4 at the Metropolitan opera-house, New York. Sembrich who had proposed to sail for Europe in a few days has rearranged her plans so as to assist, and has so notified Paderewski. Mme. Modjeska herself will appear in a favorite role during the evening. Sembrich and Paderewski are compatriots of Modjeska, in additional to being personal friends. Paderewski who was out west at the time of the Christmas holidays, spent a week at Modjeska's ranch in Santiago canyon.
Press dispatches have indicated that this was to be a benefit to Modjeska on account of her financial condition; but her friends declare this is a misunderstanding, and that the sole idea is to do honor to the great tragedienne.
