THIRTEEN INCHES OF RAIN INSURES BIG CROPS Two and a Quarter Inches for the Storm—Santa Ana River Higher Than for Many Years Rain began falling on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock and continued in showers during the afternoon. The precipitation was not heavy, a half inch being recorded by Mr. Dickel's gauge at 7 o'clock that evening. Light showers fell at intervals during the night, the amount being .15 of an inch. Sunday was a rainy day. Beginning at 11 o'clock rain fell in sheets at intervals during the day. At noon the heaviest downpour of the year set in and continued until the streets and gutters ran with water. Heavy winds blew from the south shortly after noon, during which rain fell steadily. The precipitation was not continuous. Showers fell during the afternoon, with occasional heavy downpours which were usually of short duration. At 6 o'clock in the evening a heavy shower fell and during the earlier part of the night showers continued. An inch and .13 fell during the day and night. Total precipitation for the storm, 1.78 inches; for the season, 12.45; last year to date, 3.84. The rain comes in the proverbial nick of time. A vast area has been seeded to grain throughout the county, and although it was looking well, fears were entertained by some that unless rain came soon growing crops would suffer. With seasonable showers to follow later in the month and in April great crops ought to be harvested in this county. Lightning played havoc with telephone lines in all directions. On Monday half an inch fell, bringing the total for the storm up to 2.28 inches, and for the season 12.95. The Santa Ana river was higher on Monday night than for many years, a large treat at Bolts and adjoining land. the body resting on the neck. Unable in his stuper to extricate himself from his predicament, he was strangled by the weight of the body closing the windpipe as it was pressed upon the dashboard. Stockton had an operation performed on the skull a couple of years ago, and it was thought at first that injuries resultant from the old wound had caused death, but the autopsy showed the brain to be uninjured. Coroner Smith held an inquest yesterday at Santa Ana, whither the remains had been taken. No light was shed upon Stockton's death, but it is believed to be due to alcoholism. COMMERCE COMMITTEE SCENTS NARY ODOR Journey to Orange Saturday to Inspect Gas Works, but find Them Not in Operation The Gashouse Smelling Committee made a record-breaking trip to Orange Saturday morning. In fact the committee was back in town before a wildly expectant populace was quite aware it had gone. The committee went over in Hahn's three-seater, leaving the barn at 7 o'clock, but did not leave the city until half past. They were back in town about 9. Dr. Johnson and Mr. Rea were seen walking rapidly near the postoffice about that hour. The reporter detailed upon the case inquired: "Back from that trip to Orange already?" "Yes, we are back, but we haven't anything to report for publication," said the doctor. "Did you go to Santa Ana?" was asked. "No, we didn't," said Rea; "but I'm on my way to Corona. Will give you our report in a few days." The two gentlemen disappeared around the corner. The reporter hunted up Mr. McCollum, who was found at his establish- POLES ON BROADWAY WORRY CITY TRUSTEES First They Order Them in the Alley, Then Reconsider and Order Them on South Side of Street. The city trustees took a fall out of the south side of Broadway Tuesday evening. Early in the evening, after a lengthy discussion, they ordered the Sunset telephone poles to be placed in alleys north and south of that street. Later, at 11:30 o'clock, after adjournment Mayor Rust called the board in special session, it having been discovered that one of the alleys does not run through Los Angeles street and the board unanimously decided to order the poles placed on the south side of Broadway. Mr. Rea and Dr. Johnson represented the property owners living on-the-south side of Broadway and made vigorous objection to the proposed changing of the line of poles from the north to the south side of that street. "We are trying to improve your town by making that street a credit to it," said Rea, "and we have partially succeeded. Now dont order those unsightly poles on the south side of the street when there are alleys made for that purpose. The poles now on the north side are sufficient disfigurement of the street as it is and we hope you will not order a pole line on each side." Mr. Ross of the telephone company said his instructions were to put the poles on opposite sides to electric light poles, thus eliminating the element of danger and increasing the effectiveness of the service. This is being done on all streets in town. He had changed poles on Broadway from the north to the south side at all points except in the three blocks from Los Angeles to Olive street. Engineer Lewis stated the placing of telephone poles on the opposite side of the street would also increase the effectiveness of the lighting service. Storm's Havoc The storm of Sunday washed out both Southern Pacific and Santa Fe tracks between this point and Los Angeles, and communication between the two points was interfered with. The Santa Fe washout occurred at Hobart, and the Santa Fe was compelled to use the Salt Lake tracks in order to get its trains out of Los Angeles. All trains were hours late and travelers were considerably inconvenienced. The Southern Pacific had a bad washout at Artesia as well as just outside Los Angeles, and was unable to get a train out of the latter place this way during the day. A number of trains were stalled here on both roads on Monday night, but traffic was opened during the night. Los Angeles sustained serious damage from a washout in the foothills which damaged the Seventh-street bridge across the river. At Santa Monica the long wharf had a section carried away near the center of the structure. At San Pedro the wind blew a gale of 60 miles an hour, and considerable damage was done to points along shore. Wind blew at intervals with considerable violence in this valley during Sunday afternoon, but caused no damage. Rain fell in torrents a few minutes, when clearing skies indicated a break in the storm. Telephone communication was interfered with in all directions, but wires were again in operation on Tuesday. The total precipitation for the season is about 13 inches, and the country never looked better. Rain and Crops "Big acreage being set to grain in the county?" inquired the reporter of W. J. Hill as he was coming out of the postoffice one afternoon last week. "And a lot of it will never come up unless we get some more rain," he replied. The next day Hatfield turned loose again, the precipitation amounting to nearly two inches. Bill's face must have been suffused in smiles thereat, for he has quite an extensive acreage in grain himself. DEAD HAND CLUTCHED THE REINS An underground message from Orange, received late last night, was to the effect that the gas company had not been aware of the visit of the distinguished gentlemen forming the gashouse committee, and the works were shut up when they arrived. Back from that trip to Orange already? Yes, we are back, but we haven't anything to report for publication," said the doctor. Did you go to Santa Ana? was asked. No, we didn't," said Rea; "but I'm on my way to Corona. Will give you our report in a few days." The two gentlemen disappeared around the corner. The reporter hunted up Mr. McCollum, who was found at his establishment dusting his shoes and laughing to himself amusedly. What's the latest line on gashouse stinks? queried the reporter. Say, I'd rather not talk about it," he replied, bending double in a laugh that split his sides. Go ask Dr. Johnson. He sat in the middle seat. I sat in the rear seat. He knows all about it, and I don't know a thing. Excuse me while I wait on this customer." Tell me about this thing you're laughing about," proceeded the newspaper man when next he secured a grip upon Mac's ear. "I couldn't do it, you know. We agreed not to say a thing about it—not till we make our official report, and that you will have in due time. Honestly, the committee agreed not to say a word about it just yet." Did you go to Orange? Oh, yes, we went to Orange all right." he replied pleasantly. Did you see the gas works? Well, now, I'd rather have you talk to the men in the middle seat about that. Were the gas works in operation? Well, now, really I couldn't say a word as to that. The committee agreed not to talk about it. The reporter ran into Henry Adams buying a chance in the grab box at Barborka's. What's that gashouse committee got to say about the trip to Orange? he was asked. We haven't got back yet!" he replied in his most diplomatic way. The reporter persisted. Look here, young feller," Adams went on, "The committee thought it had a stink coming. But I can't take the lid off yet, honest I can't." Did you see the gas works? Yes, what there was of it." Young plant in operation?" You go and see Rea; he'll tell you all about it." Mr. Grim was called up over the long-distance phone and asked about the trip to Orange. The committee has nothing to report for publication. Yes, we went to Orange. We saw the works. Were they in operation? Well, you see the committee agreed not to talk about our report until we made it to the chamber of commerce." And he hung up the long-distance. An underground message from Orange, received late last night, was to the effect that the gas company had not been aware of the visit of the distinguished gentlemen forming the gashouse committee, and the works were shut up when they arrived. Mr. Ross of the telephone company said his instructions were to put the poles on opposite sides to electric light poles, thus eliminating the element of danger and increasing the effectiveness of the service. This is being done on all streets in town. He had changed poles on Broadway from the north to the south side at all points except in three blocks from Los Angeles to Olive street. Engineer Lewis stated the placing of telephone poles on the opposite side of the street would also increase the effectiveness of the lighting service. Dr. Johnson suggested the alleys be used, observing the telephone company could easily accommodate its limited number of subscribers in that vicinity thereby. Ross said the new line was for the purpose not only of improving the service, but of cutting down ten party lines to two, four and six party lines, number of subscribers. The present line would not permit this and placing poles in the alleys would entail the expense of two pole lines. This he was unable to do. Rea took exception to the statements made by Ross as to bettering the service, adding that with poles in the alleys excellent service could be maintained. "It is a question whether you will protect your own citizens," he said "or whether you will favor an outside corporation which is only here to make money. We are trying to make that street a credit to the town. We object to these poles in front of our houses. We want to improve the town. Help us if you can." The board discussed the matter for an hour, desiring to do the right thing by property owners as well as the telephone people. City Attorney Melrose read the ordinance granting the telephone people a franchise, pointing out the right of the municipality as well as the company. Schwenckert moved that the poles be placed in alleys running between Los Angeles street and Olive. Seconded by Berdrow and carried. The Broadway property owners withdrew. Ross examined the map and found the alley north of Broadway did not run into Los Angeles street. When the board adjourned at 10:30 again submitted his case to them. "The board has ordered me to place poles upon an alley which is not open. I do not think that right. These property owners are entitled to consideration, but so are we. We have spent $4000 in your town putting in a new system and we are not through with our work." The board discussed the matter, Darling and Fletcher being outspoken against placing the poles in the alleys, and at 11:30 were called in special session when the alley order was reconsidered and the poles ordered on the south aldea of Broadway. Marshal Steadman reported the following collections for February: Water $280 40, electric lights $563 15, licenses $475 25, total $1318 80. Delinquents reported: Water $16, lights $7, total $23. Delinquents collected: Water $28, lights $26 90, total $54 90. Treasurer Hartung reported the following funds on hand: General fund DEAD HAND CLUTCHED THE REINS Newton Stockton, a Talbert Farmer, Found Dead In His Rig While on His Way Home from Santa Ana Newton Stockton, a Talbert rancher, was found dead in his vehicle at the White ranch, a mile north of Talbert, at dark on Friday evening. Stockton and Ross McDowell left Santa Ana about 5 o'clock for home. Both had been drinking. McDowell left Stockton a short time before the latter arrived at the White ranch. Mr. White had his attention attracted by the barking of his dogs. Going out, he discovered Stockton's rig with its occupant lying dead within it. Stockton's dead hand clutched the reins of the horse. The only mark found on Stockton's body that could indicate violence is a slight contusion over the eye. But this, in the opinion of physicians, would be insufficient to cause serious injury. When found at the White ranch, the body was in the bottom of the rig with the head over the dashboard, one hand holding the reins and the other caught under the body. A quart bottle of whiskey, one-sixth full, was found in the bottom of the buggy. The most tenable theory as to the cause of death, as advanced by Coroner Smith, is that Stockton was in a semistupetied condition from drinking and fell from the seat after McDowell left him. In falling his head struck some portion of the iron fixtures of the buggy, inflicting the wound over the eye and temporarily stunning him. At the same time, as indicated by the position of the body when found, the head fell over the dashboard, with the weight of Mr. Grim was called up over the longdistance phone and asked about the trip to Orange. "The committee has nothing to report for publication. Word comes from Orange that the committee had made an appointment with the gas man to have the works in operation, but that he forgot all about it, and when the committee arrived he was out of town. At Orange no complaint is made of the odor of gas, as none escapes, but some objection is made to the smoke issuing from the chimney. The works have 35 patrons, and run during parts of only two days a week. MRS. HALL'S MIRACLE Experiences Similar to This Have Occasioned Considerable Comment in Anaheim. Few women are better known in Lockport, N. Y., than Mrs. Pattie D. Hall, as she belongs to one of the best families and has a large circle of friends and acquaintances. In a recent interview Mrs. Hall said: "The experience I have been thru in the last two years seems like a miracle. I was so badly off that life seemed almost unendurable and my deafness increased so that I could scarcely hear anything. The suffocation in my chest and the indigestion caused by my catarrh, produced very severe suffering. I had five different physicians, bought everything that anybody recommended to me, but finally gave up in dispair." "One day my milliner asked me if I had ever tried Hyomel. I began the treatment and can thankfully testify that Hyomel does cure this terrible disease. Since using it my hearing is greatly improved and the trouble is when I take cold. I then use Hyomel and always get instant relief. My friends and acquaintances marvel at the change in my health and hearing." Hyomel has made many cures of catarrh and in connection with Hyomel balm, of catarrhal deafness, in Anaheim. Similar experiences to that of Mrs. Hall's have created a large sale for Hyomel with W. B. Hutchinson. The complete outfit, including the inhaler, costs but $1, while extra bottles are but 50 cents. Ask W. B. Hutchinson to show you the strong guarantee under which he sells Hyomel. Berdrug of the public improvements committee reported the laying of 350 2-inch pipe on Philadelphia street for the Puente oil company, and water connection made for Levi Mann's new residence on Hedwig street. Darling of the ordinance committee reported ordinance No. 168, prescribing the saloon zone. Read second time. It will be found in another column. Schwenckert called up the matter of the railroad bell on West street. Since the last meeting it had rung 20 hours. It is a nuisance, he said. It was recently repaired but was only good for a day or two. Since January 1 it has rung 99 watt hours. The city attorney was instructed to punch up the Santa Fe which promised to put alarm bells at Sycamore and Center streets. City Engineer Lewis of the power house submitted a report which will be found elsewhere in this paper. The board empowered Lewis to employ an expert to go over the field with him and make complete estimates of cost of new water and lighting systems. C. E. Groat was granted an extension of 60 days' time on cement contract work. Lewis said the city electric light wires on Broadway west of Los Angeles street were strung on poles of the telephone company. These poles were now being changed to the south side of the street along this thoroughfare, and he suggested these be purchased by the city. Mr. Ross of the telephone company who had not yet taken his fall out of the Broadway people, created a good impression by arising and saying his ON BROADWAY BORRY CITY TRUSTEES New Order Them in the Then Reconsider and Her Them on South Side of Street. A letter was read from the Edison electric company offering to install works for pumping and lighting at a cost of $1500, the city to maintain wells tanks, houses, etc; also aproposition to purchase the municipal plant outright. Schwenckert opposed the idea. He compared our municipal works with the Edison regime at Santa Ana, saying the people of that town were now on the verge of a sawsuit with the company over rates. The matter will come up again at the next meeting. Steadman said the Western Union telegraph poles were rotting and should be replaced. To the clerk to write to company. Letter from J. A.
