Our Sacramento correspondent telegraphs the information that Assemblyman Amerige will fight any raise of salaries of Orange county officials. Good for Amerige! Don't permit the county seat push to Hassonize you!
Water is rising in wells throughout this section since the heavy rains of last week. Wells in the peat bottoms which ceased flowing in the summer have begun flowing. Water in wells near the river is rising rapidly, in one instance the rise being six feet.
According to the official report of the bank commission the 224 interior banks of California are prosperous. These institutions have gained $4,864,758 in assets and $3,494,107 in deposits since August of last year.
Lieut. Alexander, of the inspection staff, who was here with Col. Wilhelm Monday evening, used to be a compositor on the Sacramento Bee and later one of its local writers. This proves the falsity of Mr. Dooley's recent observation that all the great editors are dead.
Johnny Greeley is an aspirant for superintendent of the Whittier state school. Greeley is qualified to fill the position. He has held office all his life and wouldn't know what to do with himself away from the public crib. The place pays $5000 a year.
Now they say the fairy tale about tearing down the Del Campo and erecting those fifteen cottages is all a dream, with no probability of its coming true. It keeps one busy listening to reports about the building, the latest being that it will not be razed but will be repaired, repainted and renovated into one of the finest hotels in Southern California.
Unusual weather conditions have prevailed during the week. Beginning on Sunday morning a chilly east wind blew and continued during the day and night. On Monday the weather was again zephry during the afternoon. The following day heavy clouds appeared and that unless the admiral promptly disavows, the Kaise will call for an explanation. How amicably these people beyond the sea get along with one another anyhow.
Two bills before the legislature possess especial interest to Orange county; one being an act appropriating $250,000 for the erection of a state institution for teaching scientific agriculture, the other providing for pathological station, both to be located in one of the seven southern counties. Orange county should secure both of the institutions and with a little effort on their part of our people we ought to be able to land them "our midst" without difficulty.
Taxpayers throughout the county might just as well prepare for an advance of salaries of county officials. The boys at the court house want a raise, Senator Anderson will in all probability favor it and there seems to be nothing for the common people to do but to go and swallow it. That is the way the matter presents itself and with no organized effort to prevent the new grab will go through. Probably one or two county officials need assistance owing to the county growth during recent years, but signs are not wanting to indicate that a general advance in salaries all along the line is contemplated. Salaries were raised $3 per year by the legislature four years ago, making raise $32000 for the term over the schedule allowed ficials up to the beginning of the terms of the previous encumbents. Now another substantial raise is about to be passed out to the taxpayers. The question is present here, who should regulate these salaries, the county officials or the taxpayers? If Senator Anderson who has been closeted with the boys at the courthouse this week, is correctly quoted as saying he would raise, let him look at the remains of the man responsible for the first raise and prepare to pick up place for himself alongside of him upon the wall.
California takes seven hundred prizes at the St. Francis exposition. The prizes cover a wider and more wide range of products, achievements and resources any other State in the Union or any other country in the world. In what is mined we go from infinity to gold. We exhibited the greatest variety of fruits of any part of the world, and it is affirmed grand prize. Our vegetables have equal recognition. Our scholastic establishments and achievements give honors. One grand prize carries with it a

A lady steps in to inform the editorial housewife of her success in making pants for her little boy out of the old man's cast off garments and advising adoption of a like plan on the score of economy as well as its general praiseworthiness. To which the answer is that the editor has only one pair and if they are made over for the kid what will the poor man do?
LIVERYMAN HAHN was a number of years ago in the employ of John D. Rockefeller. Hahn was one day offered a promotion in his service at a better salary but he was so attached to the horses in the barn that he refused to part with them. Perhaps if he had taken the offered position Standard Oil might have another man at the head of it. Rockefeller might be running a livery barn in Anaheim and Hahn riding in a private car and playing golf at Pasadena.

Assemblyman Estudillo of Riverside has introduced a bill in the legislature making an appropriation of $50,000 for the establishment of an experiment station in one of the seven southern counties. The bill will in all probability pass, although it may be subject to minor amendments and the amount appropriated may be reduced.
Orange county will make a strong bid for the station. The chamber of commerce of this city has already taken the matter up and an available site will be selected to be submitted to the consideration of the commission having the matter in charge. Estudillo's bill reads as follows:

Said warrant or warrants when so drawn shall be delivered to said commission, which shall use the same to pay the purchase price of said tract of land or other property, taking a deed therefor as aforesaid, the same to be delivered and filed with the regents of the university of California.
Section 4. The said tract of land when purchased as aforesaid shall be immediately given into the possession of, and shall be under the management, direction and control of the board of regents of the university of California. Immediately upon obtaining possession of said tract of land said regents shall proceed to have constructed thereon buildings and such other structures as shall be necessary for an agricultural experiment station. JONATHAN DORE.
His Transformation to Savagery and Return to Civilization.
In June, 1746, Jonathan Dore, a boy of twelve years old, was told by his father, who was at work with other men in the field, to sit on the fence and keep a sharp lookout for Indians, who were suspected to be not far away. This was in or near Rochester, N. H. The boy sat whistling on the fence. The Indians all at once came in sight. He gave the alarm, and the men all escaped, but before he could get down from the fence the Indians seized him. His father saw him captured and carried off, but could do nothing. Eleven years afterward the Fort William Henry massacre occurred. Among the New Hampshire soldiers who escaped was a Dover man, who declared confidently that he had seen Jonathan Dore. He had often been at Mr. Dore's house and knew Jonathan well. He was sure he had not been mistaken in his identification.
When the massacre became general after the surrender of the fort, the Dover man ran for the woods and was closely pursued by an Indian. His purser gained upon him so fast that he turned at last and faced him to meet his unavoidable fate. The uplifted tom-

The residence on the Leonard Parker place east of town burned to the ground on Monday afternoon. The fire started from a defective flue. The building was a two-story frame, erected in 1872. It was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Tucker. When the fire was discovered the Tuckers ran to apply the hose, but found their tank contained no water. A high east wind was blowing at the time. The building and its contents were entirely consumed. Loss estimated at $5000.

John Johnson started yesterday for the Dale mining district. It was raining as he started, but he was anxious to get over the river before further washouts interfere with travel. He looked for a heavy storm, yet braved the elements in order to keep an engagement with capitalists seeking investments. The trip will consume six days and as rain set in immediately after he left, John will probably get wet before morning. Good fortune attend him, and may he strike it rich.
Isaac Lyons, a former resident of this city, father of Mrs. Morris Smith of Orangethorpe, and Miss Belle Lyons, well known hereabout, died on Monday at his home in Los Angeles, after a brief illness. The remains were interred in Los Angeles yesterday.
Capt. Stern goes to Los Angeles on Saturday to take examination before the regular army examining board. The exam is said to be rigid, much more so than that of the national guard. We salute the captain and hope he may come off with flying colors.

American Assurance.
Americans are not the most impudent persons on the face of the earth. Nevertheless on occasion they can give points to those of some other nations. A traveler in Korea was discovered taking snapshots of Russian soldiers and promptly arrested.
"Have you been photographing my soldiers?" inquired the officer.
"Yes, and I should like to take yours. Permit me!"
Snap, and the thing was done. The Russian laughed, and the two men fell into conversation, whereupon the American said that he had recently been in Port Arthur.
"Port Arthur!" exclaimed the Russian.
"Impossible!"
Oh, no; not impossible. Your compatriots escorted me in." And, pulling some photographs from his pocket, he added: "I took these snapshots of your torpedo destroyers as they scooped down upon the little boat I was in."
The Russian looked from the man to the pictures with undisguised amazement. "Those are certainly our boats," he admitted.
"Perhaps you know their names and will oblige me by writing them on the backs of the pictures."
Like the queen of Sheba before Solomon, there was no longer any spirit in the Russian. Meekly he took the profered American pencil and upon the American's prints wrote the names of the Russian torpedo destroyers.
