Word comes from Sacramento that a bill will be introduced in the legislature raising salaries of county officials of Orange county. It will mean political death to any man from this county who supports this bill. We are not advised what course Senator Anderson and Assemblyman Amerige will pursue toward this measure, but it is to be hoped they will knock it in the head the first chance they get. Prices of building lots in the business center are on the up grade, at least one 75-foot-front lot near the city hall having been raised during the past forty-night from $2000 to $2500. Other notable increases are mentioned, the increased valuation having been brought about by plans for a number of brick blocks now in contemplation. Work on the brick block on Los Angeles street adjoining the new First National bank building will begin as soon as material can be placed on the ground. The lighting service is poor, and improvement cannot reasonably be expected in the present overloaded condition of the dynamos. As Engineer Lewis recently pointed out, the works are now running beyond their maximum registered capacity. This should not be suffered to continue. Extension of the water service is likewise out of the question for the reason that the pumping capacity at the city's power house has also reached its limit. The municipality has outgrown its present lighting and water plants. If we are to see any expansion of these public utilities, an enlargement of the works must be made, and the sooner this is brought about the better. In case of fire our boasted water system might prove to be inadequate to the demand made upon it. Let the advice of those in control of the works be heeded. It is a condition and not a theory that confronts the city. Bonds should be voted to increase the municipal lighting and water plants. Ten indictments against Tom Hays and Wally Diss were quashed by the Riverside Superior Court on Saturday by Judge Taggart of Santa Barbara, sitting for Judge Noyes, who was disqualified because of being summoned as a witness in the case. While there can be no doubt of Hays' guilt, yet the indictments against him and Diss were very properly quashed for fraudging the Salt Lake railway out of a coin amount on realty transfers. HILGARD of the University of California placed us under obligations for a copy of the issued report of the agricultural experiment of the University of California. The work should be done of every progressive farmer in the State. They get into closer contact with this grand old agricultural department at Berkeley. Pro has sent out a clarion note of warning which dates from one end of the State to the others; should be wide awake these times, when they are insidiously at work to defeat their purse set their work at naught. We shall avail of the opportunity in future issues of quoting from the pages of this report. A bill now before the legislature which language the earnest attention of horticulturists over is the Gates fertilizer bill, which seeks late the present very satisfactory fertilizer prohibitfng the publication of results of commercial fertilizers. The present law at suggestion of the farmers' clubs through State, and is said to be entirely satisfactory culturists. One of its requirements is to have ingredients of each bag of fertilizer printed up anterior of the package. The Gates bill is for the fertilizer trust, which has robbed theists of the State in the past and seeks to throats again. The trust has sent threatens to men prominent in the fight to uphold law.
