THURSDAY... December 1, 1904
The annual convention of the California Water and Forest Association has been called to meet in San Francisco on Friday, December 2nd. Reports of work done under the legislation secured by the association from the last Legislature will be presented, and plans for future work will be discussed. The approaching session of the Legislature makes the convention of high importance to the irrigation and forestry interests of the state, as it will determine upon the legislation to be pressed at Sacramento. A bill has been prepared, and will be submitted to the convention, dealing with the problem of preventing forest fires, the extinishing of fires and care of forested lands. The enormous losses each year to the state and to owners of timber land through conflagrations make this bill one of great and immediate importance. In its present form it provides for a chief forester and assistants, and fire wardens in the various districts. The officers of the association request that every county, city and district in erested in the problem of forest preservation, as well as irrigation, send delegates to the convention instructed to the wishes of the people in regard to legislation.
O. M. Skinner and son Horace were returning from Los Angeles on Sunday evening with a new touring car.
During President Roosevelt's visit to fair it was necessary to guard him close by a nest of anarchists who swarmed to city from several points east, all attracting by anxiety to do murder. These anarchies terred from harming the chief executive of the police and secret service men, who surveillance upon them. The President fair was made without attempt on the pass sassins to take his life, but what a sick tary upon our "free institutions" and "asylum for the oppressed" of all lands; the St. Louis police and secret service President's escape with his life, but if could have been placed in a neat dropped gently into the river, punishment templated crime might have been meted.
Miss M. V. Patterson, teacher of the reported the loss of her dress suit case gales police on Friday last. Miss Patnied a party of friends to Los Angeles, took a car with them for their home. another woman, who, when she got off terson's leather case, leaving her own affair, in its place. Miss Patterson think the exchange was made by mistake think it more than probable it was in part of the unknown woman.

O. M. Skinner and son Horace were returning from Los Angeles on Sunday evening with a new touring car, when they were struck by the Southern Pacific train at the crossing near Clearwater. The car was completely demolished. The Skinners narrowly escaped instant death. Mr. Skinner was thrown forty feet, but was only slightly injured about the hips. Horace Skinner leaped from the touring car just before the local struck it, and thus saved his life. The rear seat was thrown hundreds of feet away. Both men say the locomotive bell was not ringing, and that the engineer failed to blow the whistle before he reached the crossing, which cannot be seen until the track is reached on account of willows along the road. After the accident the train stopped and backed to the crossing. The conductor asked if the men wanted to go back to the city, and being informed they did not, he pulled out after learning their names. Skinner secured a rig and returned to their home on Orangethorpe avenue later in the evening. The new machine was worth $1000, and cannot be repaired.
Tim Carroll's Evergreen nurseries never presented a more pleasing appearance than at the present time, when acres upon acres of palms and other ornamental trees greet the eye, all in an advanced stage of cultivation and showing the care and attention bestowed upon them by the owner. Mr. Carroll's nurseries are the largest on the coast, and he has this week shipped a number of carloads of trees to Los Angeles, Pasadena, Ocean Park and other points. The nurseries contain twelve different kinds of gum trees, as well as acacias, palms, umbrella and other ornamental trees. Those of our readers who wish to look upon a lovely spot should make it a point to visit these nurseries and feast their eyes upon the beauties of tree growth to be seen there.
Boss Crowther seems to have effectually turned the hose upon Mars' Sherwood's bond proposition.
H. Gunderson reports an excellent nut from his young orchard on the edge of a firm believer not only in the efficacy soil and correct methods of handling it in the minor matter of the tariff which nut culture would offer very much in this section. He is convinced no tinkering with the tariff during these years at least, and his vote is ready der of things perpetual.
The Deciduous Fruit Association led of walnuts for the season at Loara on car contained 405 sacks, weighing 44,587.18. The total shipments of the tons, worth about $45,000. The season factory, and the demand for walnuts have been received already for several crop, which speaks well for the many walnuts have been graded and bleached.
Late reports of the walnut yield from 750 to 800 cars throughout South Of this Orange county's yield will now be 250 cars. Complete figures of shipment, although the entire crop is about the yield will fall away below previous estimates. Quality is high, inferior declined by the associations in a num
Secretary of State Curry has cern lowing vote polled for presidential nomination at the recent election: The votes polled was for Republican Elmer 205,226; Democratic John Garber 205,226; Joseph Lawrence 29,535; Prohibition Clark 7,380; Republican plurality,
In the light of what Engineer about' pumping plants and undergrowth voirs, it seems likely Brer Sherwood's of pumping plants for irrigators will scrap heap.

"Boots and Saddles."
The well known call of "boots and saddles" is really a corruption of the old French signal boute-selle—"put on your saddles"—from bouter, to put or place, and selle, saddle. The mediaeval saddles were of such a cumbrush and heavy make that they were taken off the horses whenever possible. In Mathew's "Powerful Favorite" of 1628 occurs the phrase "the trumpets sounded boute-selle."
In 1709 Steele wrote in the Tatler, "The sound was changed to 'boots and saddle,' but it seems probable that the phrase ran in its present form before that date, possibly coming into use during the civil war among the Roundheads, to whom the old French boute-selle would seem pandering to the cavalier and French tendencies of the court.—London Times.

Deafness Cannot Be Cured
by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the eustachian tube. When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or perfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed deafness is the result, unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition; hearing will be destroyed forever. Nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces.
We will give one hundred dollars for any case of deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for creulars, free.
