A GLORIOUS VICTORY
With this city, Orange county and California in line with largely increased Republican majorities, with every northern state carried by Roosevelt, with every Republican congressman elected in California, and with Anderson and Amerige elected by big majorities, the result of Tuesday's election may be said to be a glorious victory. Anaheim breaks all records, with a Republican majority of 102. Orange county is good for perhaps 1800, and California has rolled up a majority of from 65,000 to 70,000. These figures, while phenomenal in themselves, are mere incidents in the great political landslide that has swept over the country.
Roosevelt and Fairbanks will receive for President and Vice-President the largest electoral vote ever cast for a national ticket.
Parker did not carry a single northern state, and the Democratic pluralities were cut in the "solid South." Even Winfield Scott saved Massachusetts and Vermont when he went down with the Whig party in 1852, but Parker's candidacy has a counterpart only in that of Horace Greeley, who is the only other Democratic Presidential nominee that ever failed to carry a northern state.
Wisconsin went Republican by 100,000 and La Follette has been re-elected for a third term as Governor; Roosevelt and Deneen (for Governor) carried Illinois by upward of 200,000; Indiana has gone Republican by 40,000 and the Republicans control both branches of the Legislature.
The Republicans will control the lower branch of Congress by a majority of at least 56. Incomplete
What did it profit J. A. Hankey of Santa Ana to go before the Democratic convention accepting a nomination for assemblyman, endorsing that party's platform of principles and pledging himself to abide by it, and then to go over to the Anti-saloon league and promise in return for its support to vote for Thos. R. Bard for United States senator—what did it profit him? Could he not have foreseen the inevitable result of this political immorality? Did he for a moment suppose that the independent voter, who forms so large a part of our voting strength, would not rise up in his might and work to his utmost to defeat him? What are the facts of this case?
In the Democratic county convention a resolution was introduced pledging the nominee for assemblyman to support Bard "in the event that there existed no prospect for electing a Democrat." What became of this resolution? It was hissed out of the house and ignominiously withdrawn. Hankey was there. Upon his nomination for this office, before the heat of Democrats there assembled had subsided concerning the attempt to sell the party out to Bard, and being called before the delegates pledged himself to support the principles of the party and to stand by its nominees.
What do we find the Anti-saloon league doing? For a month they have been quietly passing the word around to the effect that Hankey is "a clean, moral man," and would if elected vote for Bard. Did Hankey authorize this statement concerning his position on the sentorship, or, if untrue, why did he permit it to go unchallenged? Probably Hankey made the pledge to the Anti-saloon people, for Republicans of the Bruner stripe have been working the county against the Republican nominee.
Who pulled the strings for this delectable combination? The president of the Anti-saloon league, Jim McFadden, who cares not a rap for the Anti-saloonists in this campaign, for the saloon question is not an issue, but he seeks to gather in a vote for Bard from Hankey. To show to what lengths the man would go in order to attain his political ambition, it is necessary to point out that Amerige pledged himself to support Bard, but announced his purpose of entering the Republican caucus. What more can any decent Republican ask than that? Yet the Bruners and his gang have knifed their party's nominee from
party in 1852, but Parker's candidacy has a counter-part only in that of Horace Greeley, who is the only other Democratic Presidential nominee that ever failed to carry a northern state.
Incomplete returns show a gain of one congressman in Delaware, three in Illinois, one each in Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey and Ohio and five in New York. Returns show that the Fifty-ninth Congress will stand: Republicans, 226; Democrats, 159; Union Labor, 1. A gain of one is indicated in the Senate, the chances being that Thomas H. Carter [Rep.] will succeed Paris Gibson [Dem.] in Montana.
The political sensation in Chicago was the defeat for Congress of William Preston Harrison, brother of Mayor Harrison, in the Eighth district. Charles McGavin, the Republican nominee, was elected by a conceded plurality of 5120 in a district that was considered Democratic by 8500. The defeat of W. P. Harrison is regarded as the beginning of the end of Mayor Harrison as a controlling factor in the Cook county Democracy.
Dr. F. M. Bruner of Santa Ana was expelled from the Columbia marching club for his persistent campaign against E. R. Amerige, assemblyman-elect. It is on the cards that he will be formally read out of the party by the Republican county central committee, together with several other gentlemen who are accused of "knocking" Mr. Amerige.
The action of the Columbia marching club in expelling Bruner is a just and merited punishment meted out to a political disturber, who should have no place in the councils or ranks of the Republican party. But while the county central committee is in the business of reading people out of the party, why not go to the head and front of the offending? The organization responsible for the fight against Amerige is the Anti-saloon league. Certainly the president of this league, Mr. James McFadden, has been cognizant of the warfare going on against the Republican candidate. If it be true that he secretly abetted this ambuscade upon Amerige, the county central committee should mark some one beside Bruner for "reading out" of the party.
The fight against Amerige seems to have turned on the possibility of Hankey's casting a vote for Bard for United States senator. Bard's supporters in Orange county seem to be willing to go to any length in order to secure his election, even though it be the disruption of the party. How much do these Bard men care for the Anti-saloon question in this campaign? Not a snap of their fingers. The organization is being used for Bard, and all this fight was made because Amerige announced he would go into the Republican nomination at Sacramento. What would these Bard peers pull the strings for this delectable combination? The president of the Anti-saloon league, Jim McFadden, who cares not a rap for the Anti-saloonists in this campaign, for the saloon question is not an issue, but he seeks to gather in a vote for Bard from Hankey. To show to what lengths the man would go in order to attain his political ambition, it is necessary to point out that Amerige pledged himself to support Bard, but announced his purpose of entering the Republican caucus. What more can any decent Republican ask than that? Yet the Bruners and his gang have knifed their party's nominee from the start.
And what has it profiled Mr. Hankey? Discarded by the voters, his carcass lies upon the political scrap-pile, unwept, unhonored and unsung. The people of Orange county have no use for politics, weather-vanes, nor for immoral men politically, however staid and proper they may imagine themselves to be in the private walks of their obscure lives. So long, Hankey.
The careful reader of Judge Parker's recent speech on the tariff, which was simply a condensation of Professor Taussig's tariff history of the United States, fails to find any allusion whatever to a most interesting and important tariff law which was enacted during the memory of every living voter. How interesting reading it would have made had Judge Parker called up the Wilson-Gorman tariff of 1894, which his friend Cleveland refused to sign because it was a "measure of perfidy and dishonor." How interesting Judge Parker might have made the paper had he insisted that those who prepared it for him attempt a defense of the workings of that tariff which brought such ruin and misery to our industries and our people.
Judge Parker in his speeches during the closing day of the campaign failed to tell the American people whether he would advocate a return to such conditions as those under which we lived during those trying days from 1893 to 1897. He did not tell us whether he would prefer that we should import during a period of two or three years 800,000,000 pounds of wool, instead of growing that wool in our own states. He did not tell us whether he should like to throw out of employment those hundred millions of men who were idle during those years, and to put on half pay three million more thereby reducing the purchasing power of our people to the extent of from five to ten billions of dollars. Would interest us to know how, when it became necessary for Judge Parker to issue bonds, as it seems to have been necessary for James Buchanan and for Grover Cleveland, to tell us in what way and by what method these bonds would be issued, in order that we might anticipate their sale. Mr. Cleveland has most fitting compared Mr. Parker to Mr. Buchanan, and as the reign of Buchanan is remembered only for the poverty and bankruptcy which accompanied it, we should well lie to know what Judge Parker is going to do when he party puts on our statute books a free trade law such as the tariff of '57 or the tariff of '94 to avoid a repetition of the conditions of commerce and finance under those tariffs.
Hankey pledged himself to the Democratic convention to support a Democrat for United States senator not in so many words, it is true, but he accepted non-

The organization is being used for Bard, and all this fight was made because Amerige announced he would go into the Republican caucus at Sacramento. What would these Bard people have him do? There will be two caucuses at Sacramento in January—Republican and Democratic-Which one should a Republican enter? If Amerige should decline to enter the Republican caucus, would it be expected of him that he would go into the other? If not, why not? Further, if Bard's supporters really wish for his success, how can legislators favorable to his election best bring that about—by going into caucus, or staying out of it?
The election is over, and all’s well that ends well. Let the Bruners and all other political ambush men be read out of the party forthwith.
The vote given Richard Melrose in his home precinct cannot but be gratifying to that gentleman, he having run well ahead of his ticket throughout the county. Many Democrats supported him, which cannot but be regarded as a fitting testimonial to his worth on the part of his friends and neighbors who have known him during his long residence here. His nomination for presidential elector was the first time this city has been thus honored by either of the two great parties, and that the action of the Republican convention was endorsed by the neighbors of that gentleman, as well as by Republicans throughout the state, is cause for congratulation all around.
A Whittier man reports encountering a lion on the streets of that city while returning home one night recently. Aud Whittier is a prohibition town.
A conundrum which is going the rounds out West is this:
“Why is the letter 'R' the most interesting in the alphabet?”
“Because it is the beginning of Roosevelt and the end of Parker.”
Tom Taggart should understand that November is not a good month for rainbow chasing.
Hankey pledged himself to the Democratic convention to support a Democrat for United States senator, not in so many words, it is true, but he accepted nomination immediately after a resolution instructing the nominee for Bard was hissed off the floor. Being placed in nomination by the Democratic party and standing upon its platform of principles, Hankey could not honorably refuse to support a Democrat for the United States senatorship. Very well. Now what does Hankey say to Republicans whose support he solicits? In the face of the ignominious failure to put a Bard closer about his neck in his own convention, he pledges to vote to that very man “in the event of there being no prospect of electing a Democrat.” This is not squash politics, and the voters of Orange county have placed an emphatic stamp of disapproval upon such tactics.
A man may have a character above reproach as a private citizen, but he must have clean political morals as well in order to gain the support of right-thinking voters nowadays.
Joseph Fiscus makes a good argument for the Republican, albeit it is somewhat late. He says that during Cleveland's administration he could hire all the boring men for from 80 cents to $1 per day, and count buy the best unimproved land in Orange county at $1 per acre. Now he has to pay $1.75 to $2 per day for labor and this same land cannot be bought for less than $100 to $125 per acre. He says he sighs for the time of cheap men and cheap land, so that he might load up on large tracts and then with the advent of Republicanism step in and reap large profits on his investment. Fiscus votes his ticket like the Kentuckian takes his whisky—straight every time.
Senator S. C. Smith is elected to Congress by a majority over Lucas exceeding 7000. Complete returns are not yet at hand, and his majority will undoubtedly exceed figures now at hand. Mr. Smith was given hearty support by the Republicans of Orange county as well as the other counties of the south.
Republicans are not responsible for good crops, but they are responsible for the policy which furnishes good markets for good crops.

INJURED BY RUNAWAY HORSE
A horse in charge of a Japanese driver took fright while free from control at Smeltzer last week and ran away. Boyd, the little two-year-old son of Walter Gibbons was run over by the horse and vehicle and sustained painful injuries. His thigh bone was fractured midway between the knee and hip, and other injuries not so serious.
A drummer who was in town a few days since with a Santa Ana rig took the bridle off the horse to water it at Mercereau's store, instead of drinking the horse ran away and demolished the vehicle completely. Another rig was phoned for which the traveling man returned to Santa Ana in.
Mrs. R. H. Deakens was called to Colton on account of the illness of relatives there.
An English Author Wrote:
"No shade, no shine, no fruit, no flowers, no leaves—November." Many Americans would add, no freedom from catarrh, which is so aggravated during this month that it becomes constantly troublesome. There is abundant proof that catarrh is a constitutional disease. It is related to scrofula and consumption, being one of the wasting diseases. Hood's Sarsaparilla has shown what is capable of eradicating scrofula, completely cures catarrh and taken in time prevents consumption. We cannot see how any sufferer can put off taking this medicine, in view of the widely published record of its radical and permanent cures. It is undoubtedly America's greatest medicine for America's greatest disease—catarrh.
Building with Cash
J. Ross Clark of the Salt Lake railroad said the other day that the company had just ordered from eastern manufacturers fifty passenger and freight locomotives to cost a total of about $500,000, and 2000 box, stock and coal cars for a total of $850,000. This $1,350,000 for new rolling stock is in addition to the order for eight new passenger trains to cost about $800,000. Mr. Clark says the company has already fifty locomotives and quite a large number of freight and passenger cars.
"Cash is being paid for the building of the road and the purchases of its equipment," continued Mr. Clark.
"None of the company's stock has been sold and not one bond of the $50,000,000 authorized bond issue. It is the only big road in the West ever built with cash, and none will be more modern than it when finished. About 1600 men and as many horses are at work rapidly completing construction."

Rheumatism is one of the constitutional diseases. It manifests itself in local aches and pains, inflamed joints and stiff muscles,—but it cannot be cured by local applications. It requires constitutional treatment acting through the blood, and the best is a course of the great medicine Hood's Sarsaparilla which has permanently cured thousands of cases.
For testimonials of remarkable cures read for Book on Rheumatism, No. 7. C.I. Hood Co., Lowell, Mass.
