Analheim Weekly Gazette PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY HENRY KUCHEL, Editor and Proprietor THURSDAY ... November 3, 1904 Republican Nominees. FOR PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT Of New York. FOR VICE PRESIDENT CHARLES W. FAIRBANKS Of Indiana. For Congress S. C. SMITH of Kern. For Senator Thirty-ninth District JNO. N. ANDERSON of Santa Ana. For Assembly 76th District E. R. AMERIGE of Fullerton, PRESIDENTIAL ELECTORS First Congressional District — Judge Edward Sweeney, Shasta county. Second District—Charles M. Hammond, Lake. Third—F. M. Smith, Alameda. Fifth—George H. Pippy, San Francisco. Sixth—M. B. Harris, Fresno. Seventh—C. J. Walker, Los Angeles. Eighth—Richard Melrose, Orange. Electors-at-Large—U. S. Grant, San Diego; Wm. S. Wood, San Francisco. At the meeting of the Republican county central committee on Saturday evidence was presented that a house-to-house canvass was being made at Santa Ana by Prohibitionists, calling themselves Republicans, Roosevelt, no matter what local disturbances affect the ticket. Many who were Democrats before 1896 will vote for Roosevelt, although naturally, they say little about their intention, and a very large number of independents have openly declared for him. The election this year will show that the men who joined the party of honest money in 1896 and in 1897 have resolved to support the party of honest money in national prosperity, of sound, virile activity, in the way of international improvements, of a dignified, strong foreign policy, of protection to American citizens home and abroad, of equal opportunities and justice all without regard to race, color or religion. It will reveal the earnest devotion of hundreds of first voters to the principles of Republicanism. Inefficiency, uncertainty, division in council—the do not command the interest and good will of the American people. The little coterie under the wing of Dr. B. Hill in New York is going to have a great object son in the near future. The country is safe in the hands of the Republican party. Roosevelt and Fairbanks are typical Republicans. Their endorsement by an immense majority certain. Dr. Johnston of this city, who is the physician in tendance upon Mr. Amerige at his home in Fullerton has had Dr. J. H. Bullard and Dr. Visscher of Los Angeles in consultation with him this week. Mr. Amerige's condition is such that callers are denied attendance to his room. He is suffering with a breaking out of his physical forces, due to exactions upon his gies for a month or two past. In this connection it is proper to say that pern enemies are circulating untruthful reports concerning him, and are at work against his re-election as a blyman. Mr. Amerige's election will have an important standing upon the contest for postmaster at Fullerton which there are three or four candidates. One of these aspirants, it is charged, are canvassing portions of the county against him, feeling, probably, that he be defeated they will stand a better show to win own fight. It is proper to say that the Republican county trial committee is taking a hand in the fight, and man who engages in a fight against a legislative nee, especially when a United States senator is elected, can expect anything but fight from the mittee. Mr. Amerige's many friends sincerely hope he recover speedily and participate in the campaign. At the meeting of the Republican county central committee on Saturday evidence was presented that a house-to-house canvass was being made at Santa Ana by Prohibitionists, calling themselves Republicans, against E. R. Amerige, candidate for the Assembly. The charge against Mr. Amerige is that he owns a building at Fullerton in which is maintained a place where liquors are sold. The canvass against him is said to have been in active progress at Santa Ana for some weeks past, and is now extending to other portions of the southern part of the county. In view of these inroads into Mr. Amerige's vote, it will be seen that he needs the support of every true Republican in the county. Ill at home and unable to get out, it is time for his friends to be up and doing to the end that he may not be thus ambushed by his personal and political enemies. And from one end of the county to the other his friends have risen to the clarion call emanating from the central committee to rally to his support and see to it that he receive at least his party's full support. Whether or not Mr. Amerige owns a building at Fullerton in which a liquor establishment is maintained, does not materially effect the situation at this time. Fullerton licenses saloons, and to provide buildings for their occupancy is no worse than to issue licenses to them permitting them to do business. However, this has nothing to do with Tuesday's election, so far as we can see. Mr. Amerige is the regularly nominated candidate of the Republican party for the Assembly, and will if elected vote for a United States senator of that political faith. This is the question which should engage the attention of Republican voters at this time: Will they permit themselves to have dust thrown in their eyes by emissaries of their political opponents? If it is true that Republicans are implicated in this political ambuscade, there will be some ta'l reading out of the party by the central committee before these gentlemen are much older. Let political decks be cleared for action. The election is upon us. If there are any renegades in camp, out with them, be they high or low. And let good Republicans everywhere rally to the support of Amerige, and let us roll up a majority for him of a thousand. On the first page will be found some interesting figures regarding the inequality of representation in states North and South. The figures and accompanying data will repay careful perusal by our readers. For instance, Mississippi polled four years ago some 18,000 votes and had seven congressmen. California polled 275,000 votes and had the same number of congressmen. John Sharp Williams, the Democratic leader in the House and chairman of the St. Louis We have a letter from Chas. H. Speer, prefect of the board of state harbor commissioners, in regard to the proposed issue of $2,000,000 bonds for extension of the seawall at San Francisco. Mr. Speer out that principal and interest of these bonds would pay for by revenues from the water front. He the state will never be called upon to pay a ceil this obligation, and we publish the statement of his authority. The trouble with this proposition that voters generally throughout the state do not understand it as Mr. Speer points out the facts is that San Francisco will itself meet the obligation this bond issue, principal and interest, voters in portions of the state can have no objection to but we fear the time has gone by wherein throughout the state can be educated up to this We are content to take Mr. Speer's explanation case, and shall vote in favor of the bonds, altho we had intended voting against them. However think it is too late in the day to change the ineven result, and unless San Francisco and other towns support the bonds solidly, their defeat seem be a foregone conclusion. This is the last issue of this journal before election on Tuesday next. We hope every Reagan in Anaheim and vicinity will support the new congressional and legislative nominees of the Whatever might have been the character of the city's contest within its own nominating convention the gentlemen receiving nominations secured honorably and are entitled to the party's united unswerving support: For presidential electors, and Melrose of this city; for Congress, S. C. Sn Kern; for state senator, John N. Anderson of Ana; for assemblyman, E. R. Amerige of Full All are men worthy the support of their party Anaheim Republicans, as well as those of the county, give unqualified support to their nomination If there are any hammer-wielders let them be held up to reproach. But we believe that none such—no, not even one! Support your nees! J. N. Anderson of Santa Ana, Republican no for state senator, made an excellent impression our people at Monday evening's meeting. Mderson has lived many years in Orange county is fitted by education and personal qualification properly fill the high office to which he aspire On the first page will be found some interesting figures regarding the inequality of representation in states North and South. Louis convention, polled 1400 votes in his Mississippi district—there were no Republican votes. In this congressional district (the Seventh, four years ago) Needham [R] polled 23,450, Crichton [D] 18,981. Upward of 42,000 votes were cast in the district. There seems to be something radically wrong with this inequality of representation. Orange county will this year poll close upon 6000 votes. With the same basis of representation obtaining in this county as in Williams' Mississippi district, we should be entitled to four congressmen, instead of forming say a sixth or seventh part of the Eighth California district. The state of California, by the same rule, would have upward of 100 congressmen—more than the states of New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio combined. Mississippi thus has as many electoral votes as California, with one-fifteenth the voting population of this state. Mississippi's nine electoral votes are based upon a voting strength equal to that of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties combined. Is this equality in representation? Is it fair or honest? Not a bit of it. In one of the Georgia districts the ratio of voters to the total population is 1 to 202. If this ratio obtained in this city, Anaheimi would poll, within its corporate limits of a mile and a half square, not to exceed fifteen votes! Something wrong about this limitation of the franchise in Mississippi and other southern states. As election day draws near it becomes more certain that the Republican party is going to be continued in power by the expressed desire of an immense majority of voters. The people had made up their minds before the shouting and the hurrahing of the campaign had begun. Recently, under the questions of canvassing committees from both great national parties, they have revealed their minds. Every Republican will vote for J. N. Anderson of Santa Ana, Republican nominee for state senator, made an excellent impression on our people at Monday evening's meeting. Mr. Anderson has lived many years in Orange county is fitted by education and personal qualification properly fill the high office to which he aspire Riverside county, which forms with Orange of the Thirty-ninth senatorial district, he is deserved popular and will receive a majority in excess of Orange county will roll up a majority for him the ticket of not less than 1000, and he will provide the honor of receiving the largest majority rolled up for any candidate for the office. Anaheim is a worthy, clean and broad-minded gentleman is entitled to and will receive the undivided and thusiastic support of all good people. Vote for derson and Amerige. They will make a strong in the Legislature. The Republican state convention has held Anaheim by nominating Richard Melrose of that candidate for presidential elector. Mr. Melrose been a resident of this section for 35 years, has voted the Republican ticket, and his voice and have ever been at the service of his party. A majority for him in his home precinct and county will show to Republicans throughout that the action of the state convention in thus ing him is appreciated and endorsed at home. For Melrose is a vote for an earnest and con-Republican. Orange county shows an increase of 547 registered voters, as compared with the total of two years ago figures being 5621 for the present year, as against in 1902. Santa Ana shows an increase of 229 registered voters, the figures being 1538 as against 1309 two age. Orange has an increase of 101, the figures 455 as against 354 two years ago. Anaheim and Anaheim have an increase of 59, the figures for the precincts being 588 for this year as against 52 years ago. Fullerton has 333 registered voters, a 6 from two years ago. The local disturbances affect his democrats before 1896 will vote naturally, they say little about large number of independents in him. He will show that the men who got money in 1896 and in 1900 at the party of honest money, of sound, virile activity, in the work moments, of a dignified, strong motion to American citizens at real opportunities and justice to color or religion. Westminster The local lodge of the order of For-esters entertained their invited friends at the I. O. O. F. hall last Thursday evening. The Chief Ranger from Los Angeles was present, and presided over the meeting and speechified upon the merits of the organization. His remarks were attentively listened to and warmly applauded. Among other numbers rendered during the evening was a comical recitation by Mr. Barton, which occasioned much laughter and merriment; a guitar and mandolin duet by Messrs. King and Ingram, of Garden Grove; a song, entitled "Two little boys and two little toys," was sweetly sung by little Miss Clara Harris, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. O. Warling; piano solos were capably played by Misses Mary and Gertrude Rogers; vocal duets by Mrs. and Miss Arrowsmith were loudly applauded by all. A chicken supper was spread in the banquet hall downstairs, where the guests were royally served by their hosts. After refreshments a jolly sociable time was passed until a late hour. The members of the Fraternal Brotherhood lodge here tendered Mr. and Mrs. Edwards a farewell surprise party at their home on Friday night. Presents of an elegant settee and rocking chair and a large asparagus fern were made as a token of the esteem in which the couple are held. Games and music served to while away a very pleasant evening. Mrs. Turner, who three weeks ago was taken to the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jonkens at Bolsa, on account of sickness, and who was conva-lescing nicely, had the bad luck, while retiring a few nights ago to slip and fall upon her hip, painfully hurting herself. At last reports she was resting easily. F. F. Skelley has been laid up with a bad attack of rheumatism, and has gone down to the San Juan hot sp.,ings to try and find relief. He is accompanied to the springs by J. Nankervis. Chas. Bauer and Ed. Larter went on an evening duck shoot Friday. They had good sport and netted big bags. Geo. Carlyle was over from Long Beach. Fruit conditions in California at the present time are at a somewhat low ebb, owing to the disorganized condition of the growers. How to remedy this will be the great subject to come up for consideration at the convention. This is a vital matter, and one in which every fruit grower in California is directly interested. A harmonious organization, by which the various growers can work together, means success in their business and a fair profit for their labors. Falling in this, ruin stares them in the face. Realizing this condition, the fruit growers are moving to attend this convention in large numbers, and it unquestionably will be the most important and best attended that has ever been held in the state. The gathering marks the thirty-sixth annual meeting of the association. The State of California has grown in population from 1,385,053 in 1900 to 1,756,500 June 30 last.
