Anaheim Weekly Gazette PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY HENRY KUCHEL. Editor and Proprietor THURSDAY ... October 20, 1904 Republican Nominees. FOR PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT Of New York. FOR VICE PRESIDENT CHARLES W. FAIRBANKS Of Indiana. For Congress S. C. SMITH of Kern. For Senator Thirty-ninth District JNO. N. ANDERSON of Santa Ana. For Assembly 76th District E. R. AMERIGE of Fullerton, PRESIDENTIAL ELECTORS First Congressional District — Judge Edward Sweeney, Shasta county. Second District—Charles M. Hammond, Lake. Third—F. M. Smith, Alameda. Fifth—George H. Pippy, San Francisco. Sixth—M. B. Harris, Fresno. Seventh—C. J. Walker, Los Angeles. Eighth—Richard Melrose, Orange. Electors-at-Large—U. S. Grant, San Diego; Wm. S. Wood, San Francisco. A Los Angeles paper recently published a story about the probable organization of a new regiment of national guards, saying so numerous were applications for companies of the guard from different towns. With Mr. Huntington building twenty-two miles of electric railway in Orange county, and with several other lines in contemplation, one of these through this city; with Mr. Rockefeller establishing his first Standard Oil plant in Orange county at this point, and with two gas companies acquiring against one another for a franchise to operate an extensive gas plant here, things may said to be looking up in this portion of Orange county. Huntington is after our passenger and freight Rockefeller has his eye on supplying oil to the hundred pumping plants and other consumers in this neighborhood, and the gas companies will supply us with fuel and power. Within the constraints no gas for illuminating purposes will be but the populous neighborhoods north, east, west, and west of town will prove a rich field for light as well as heating and fuel purposes. Probably of the pumping plants may be operated by gas another year. Anaheim holds out a cordial way to these captains of industry; it offers to them viting field, the richest, best-watered and most productive spot on earth. Our people will do better with them, and we assure them our relations mutually advantageous and helpful from the jury. If reports from Placentia are to be relied upon and they come from authentic sources and with semblance of probability, Democrats in that local area are declaring for Roosevelt and Smith almost every week the names of three are given who have clared they will renounce former political affiliations and support the Republican candidates. Theseers are new acquisitions to the party, and their do not include such former Democrats as A Tudleton and J. C. Sheppard, both of whom are now have since the last campaign been Republicans. More, how many Democratic walnut growers enjoy their party's platform that the protection of their industry is "a robber tariff" which ought to be in the event of Democratic success, off the statute books? With the California nuts fixed at 11 cents, and Bordeaux and Gin nuts offering at 5 cents, to be laid down by the load at New York at 8 cents, how long would they ing out of the 3 cent tariff require to produce A Los Angeles paper recently published a story about the probable organization of a new regiment of national guards, saying so numerous were applications for companies of the guard from different towns in Southern California that Gen. Wankowski had determined another regiment was among the probabilities of the near future. Probably the story is in large part founded on fact, for it is known that a number of towns are applicants for companies to take the place of those recently mustered out of the service at Talbert and Santa Ana, while other towns have been for some time past eager to have companies in their localities. Towns now actively striving for companies include Long Beach, Whittier, Santa Ana (which seeks to have a new company to replace that recently mustered out of service there), Ventura, Santa Paula and other places. But the article in the Los Angeles paper contains several blanders which detract from such credibility as would otherwise attach to it. For instance, Anaheim has not sent a committee to Gen. Wankowski asking for a company here, because the town has already a company of the guard stationed here, and a very fine company it is too, being the color company of the Seventh regiment, and having had the honor of being escort to Col. Finley and his staff at the Atascadero encampment. Anaheim's company compares with the best in the state. Moreover, the company is now completing plans for erection of one of the best-equipped and largest armories in Southern California. Again, the Los Angeles story refers to a Ventura town as having once had a company which went out of existence "on account of so many of its members having fallen in the Philippine war." Now, the fact is that this Ventura county company was mustered out because it could not keep up with the guard—that's the whole thing in a nutshell. When the Seventh was called out, this particular company turned out with a membership below the minimum, and Orange county furnished a number to fill up its ranks. On returning from the Presidio the company failed to keep up its attendance at drills and it was mustered out. The article referred to has other inaccuracies. We hope the paper will do the right thing by the town which now has the regimental color company, and which also furnished a number of young men for Sauta Paula, so that company might properly go forth to battle in defense of its country. Yet Southern California is growing, and we hope to see, before many years are over, another regiment alongside of the gallant Seventh. Comparison of the statistics of the United States with those of other countries shows that this country enjoys a much greater degree of prosperity than any other. During the ten years from 1892 to 1902 the population of Great Britain increased 10 per cent., Senator Fairbank's letter of acceptance isament which appeals directly to the business masters generally. It states clearly some of the important, but perhaps not sufficiently understood sets of the Republican party in its conflict with Dracy. In calling attention to the service done to the country by the establishment of the bureau of commerce and labor, with a special department to deal with rations, the senator points out the first real attempt the government to deal with the trust problem clearly sees that the regulation of the great conditions of capital by law is possible, is necessary, shows the consistent course of the Republican party this regard. As to our foreign policy, Senator Fairbanks considers that we have much to be proud of in this conservative and thoroughly broad and Christian which has been adhered to during the years of Russian administration. The tremendous expansion trade, and our foreign influence has been accompanied by peaceful methods, and no remote sign of war peared upon our horizon in the years following its establishment of new national relations or our acquaintance of a vast territory in the Far East. In his enunciation of the Republican idea of sirability of closer trade relations with our great bor, Canada, the candidate for the vice-president peculiarly happy. He is plainly for a liberal mode for reciprocity between this country and the people over the line to the north. He also emphasizes value of the "open door" secured for us in China promises a continuance of the benefits of that race our recent foreign policy. As a whole, the letter of the vice-presidential date is one which commands respect and concludes Senator Fairbanks is meeting the American people to face, from one end of the country to the other very lively campaign. It is well, however, to hand his written opinions and aspirations as a man on the great questions at issue at this moment. The San Francisco Examiner makes a speech argument in favor of the Republican party in sue of Saturday, wherein Olney's speech denouncing this country's war with Spain "a needless inadequately referred to. Mr. Hearst's paper Comparison of the statistics of the United States with those of other countries shows that this country enjoys a much greater degree of prosperity than any other. During the ten years from 1892 to 1902 the population of Great Britain increased 10 per cent., that of Germany 15 per cent. and that of the United States 21 per cent. During the same period the total deposits in all the banks in Great Britain increased 43 per cent., in the United States 101 per cent. Coal production in Great Britain increased 21 per cent., in Germany 64 per cent., in France 22 per cent., in the United States 75 per cent. The production of pig iron increased 18 per cent. in Great Britain, 59 per cent. in Germany, 17 per cent. in France, 94 per cent. in the United States. The production of steel increased 65 per cent. in Great Britain, 132 per cent. in Germany, 133 per cent. in France and 173 per cent. in the United States. The exports of manufactures increased 18 per cent. in Great Britain, 30 per cent. in Germany, 10 per cent. in France and 155 per cent. in the United States. Great Britain, with her enormous outflow to her colonies, exported in 1902 manufactures to the amount of $1,126,000,000, while the United States exported $4,403,000,000; but whereas Great Britain in this item gained only 18 per cent. during the decade from 1892 to 1902 over the last preceding decade, the United States gained 155 per cent. Why should any person vote to exchange such prosperity as that for a period of political disturbing legislation and business depression? Over a thousand persons left Chicago on Saturday for California via the various railroads. They took advantage of the $33 rate which has been in effect for a month, expiring the 16th. It has been estimated by the passenger officials that since September 15th over 25,000 persons have come to California on the rate. Of that number possibly 10,000 will remain in the Golden State, settling principally in Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys and Southern California. The exodus taxed to the utmost the service of the Pullman Company. The "blanket rate" of $20 from Chicago to the Southwest, Oklahoma, Indian Territory, Arkansas, Arizona and Texas, will be withdrawn next Tuesday. The San Francisco Examiner makes a special argument in favor of the Republican party in sue of Saturday, wherein Olney's speech denouncing this country's war with Spain "a needless is adequately referred to. Mr. Hearst's paper Cleveland's secretary of the navy for his un-American utterances in pointing out that the destruction Maine hastened the war for liberation of Cuba tainly no one who remembers the Virginius affair fail to blush for shame at Olney's observation the Examiner truthfully says, reparation should been demanded from Spain at that time, even cost of war. The Virginius affair marks one darkest pages in American history, but Mann Santiago have made amends in part. Olney'ences to the Spanish war are shameful, and it is ant to note that at least one Democratic paper sent forcibly from his views. Let us be Amherst first, party men afterward. There are 124 high schools in California, of which include drawing in their course of Of this number only 16 are fully accredited by University of California in both free-hand and chanica' drawing. Included in this number are high schools at Anaheim and Fullerton. This volumes not only for these institutions of lear but as well for the instructor, Miss L. L. Ingle who has half-day classes in each school. Senator Smith has continued his campaign to Riverside and San Bernardino counties, and our day evening addressed a great rally at Riv where Governor Pardee also spoke. Senator Smith believes he will roll up a majority of election day. Estimates are made that the fiveern counties of Los Angeles, Riverside, San Dino, Orange and San Diego will roll up a majority of 20,000 for Roosevelt, and that the President jority in the state will mount up to 75,000. With this issue the Gazette completes the fourth year of its publication. It has more read day than ever, and has many improvements in to offer its patrons during the near future. LETTERS FROM PASTORS Read at Dedication of New Prsbutrian Church—God's Abundant Blessing Several letters to the pastor and congregation of the First Presbyterian church were read at the dedication of that edifice. That from Rev. James Stone, former pastor, was as follows: Dear Friends of the Anaheim church: I regret very much that I am not able to be with you at the dedication of your beautiful new church. I rejoice more than I can tell you to know of the splendid work you have done. I well know you have worked hard and made great sacrifices for it but you will enjoy it all the more. And now since you have a new temple in which to worship, may your lives grow more beautiful. May our Father bless you with blessings too large for you to receive so that your cup may overflow in benediction to others making your temple all glorious with sacred souls and good deeds done. Mrs. Stone joins me in sending as our greeting: Phil. 1:8-11 R. V. "For God is my witness, how I long after you in all the tender mercies of Jesus Christ. And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and discernment; so that you may approve the things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and void of offense unto the day of Christ; being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are through Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God." Praying God's abundant blessing on you all. Yours very affectionately, JAMES B. STONE. Rev. Wardle, also a former pastor, writes as follows from Dallas, Or: Dallas, Polk County, Ore. August 20, 1904. Dear Brother Chapman.-I could wish no greater pleasure than to be in BUENA Park Ernest Kellenberger, son of J. Kellenberger of this place, has gone on the cruise of the Buffalo to Arctic waters, and will go to the Hawaiian Islands before returning. Ernest has risen to the station of gunner, and handles one of the big fowling pieces aboard ship. He receives a salary of $1800 per year. Ernest was on the torpedo boat McKee during the Cuban blockade, and in the harbor of Sagua la Grande, on the north coast of Cuba, participated in the capture and burning of eleven small Spanish craft. From one of these he captured a Spanish flag. He was in charge of the after gun on the Oregon on the trip of that battleship from New York to Manila at the close of the war. Mrs. Chas. Robinson delightfully entertained a number of the young folks at her home on last Friday evening. The game, progressive pit, was the feature of the evening, occasioning much merriment and fun. The honors of victors for the prizes fell to Miss Rose Kellenberger and Floyd Champion. Delicious refreshments were served, after which music concluded the enjoyable evening, and all returned to their homes, voting Mrs. Robinson to be a most charming hostess. Ed Neiger narrowly escaped the loss of his left eye, if not his life, on Monday. He was engaged in chopping at a tree with a sharp ax, when in some way he missed his swing, the force of which caused him to lose his balance and fall on the keen edge of ax with his face, almost severing the eyebrow, and probably injuring the bone. Dr. Husson was obliged to take four or five stitches in the wound. A Republican rally will be held here on Friday evening, October 21st. Hon Richard Melrose of Anaheim, J. N. Anderson, candidate for state senator, and E. R. Amerige, candidate for assembly will be the speakers. The Republican Glee club will render campaign songs. Supt. Wilcox left on Monday for San Francisco, where he goes in the interest of his can-making machinery. ORANGE COUNTY UPWARD FIELD Giant Strides. Chicken-Pie Dinner The ladies of the Christian church will serve a chicken-pie dinner the day and evening of Nov. 8th, election day. Deacon Kellogg informs us he has a number of yellow-legged fowl spotted in various barnyards and will make a descent upon them the coming dark of the moon. He promises the finest provender ever set before the people of this city, and the reputation of the Christian church ladies for excellence in chicken-pie construction is such as to leave no doubt the dinner will be one worth going many miles to become acquainted with. Making by the Gem Countu of the Southland—Figures from Controller's Report. Controller Colgan has forwarded a copy of his annual report giving the assessed property valuation of the counties of the state, in which it is seen that Orange county is fifteenth in the list of fifty-seven counties in the state, Alpine being the last, with a total assessed valuation of $480,829. The assessed valuation of the fifteen leading counties is given as follows: 1. San Francisco... $503,053,557 2. Los Angeles... 201,509,786 3. Alameda... 109,714,598 4. Santa Clara... 55,468,822 5. Its railroad valuation amounts to $2,706,800, while that of Orange county is about half that amount, being $1,451,868. The total valuation of all the counties of the state as given is $1,550,571,761. When reference is made to the geographical area of our two neighboring counties on the east, as compared with that of Orange—San Bernardino being twenty-six times our size and Riverside nineteen times—it will be seen that Orange county holds her own quite well with the other rapidly developing counties of the south. With the railroads now building and in contemplation during the coming year, Orange county is destined to show yet greater progress in the coming twelve months. Moreover, the surf electric line connecting Alamitos and Huntington beaches in this county is not included in the controller's figures. Our railroad valuation during the coming year ought to be considerably in excess of $1,000,000. Orange county is fifteenth on the list, yet Santa Cruz, which is placed in the thirteenth class, and Mendocino, in the fourteenth, each have an inferior valuation to that of Orange; Mendocino by two and a half millions, Santa Cruz by more than a million and a half. Orange county may therefore be said to have passed these two northern counties, and is now hot-foot after Solano, twelfth on the list, with a valuation four million dollars greater than our own. With Huntington building 22 miles of electric road in this county, and probably 100 miles of other lines to be constructed in the near future, through La Habra and Placentia and River canyon; with the Standard Oil constructing a large plant here—the only one in Orange county—and with two gas companies actively bidding for a franchise to operate a gas plant in Anaheim, the county of Orange, ever the gem and pride of the southland, may be said to be just beginning its upward flight. It will not rest content until Solano is passed; and then let the other counties ahead of us in property valuation look to their laurels, for we intend to make it interesting for them so we have passed... The Sacred Twelve. The "patriarchal and apostolical number of twelve" as the proper and only admissible number for a jury trying cases according to the common law has come down to us from remote antiquity. Yet this number was not always universal. In 1852 a Cornish custom to have juries of six was declared to be bad, but evidence was given that such juries had been widely used in the county, and by a special statute of Henry VIII. Juries of six were allowed in Wales. But the jury of the grand assize consisted of sixteen men, which still finds a parallel in the jury of presentments of the Liberty of the Savoy. The modern grand jury, the coroner's jury and the jury at Immacy and ecclesiastical inquisitions number anything between twelve and twenty-three, whereof twelve at least must agree on a verdict.—London Law Journal.
