On Saturday evening at the opera-house, Senator S. C. Smith of Kern, Republican candidate for Congress in the Eighth district, will address the people of this vicinity upon the political issues of the day. Invitations have been extended Republicans of neighboring localities to be with us on that occasion, and probably one of the largest meetings ever held in Orange county will result. The figures showing the increased volume of ports of manufactures are gratifying in the economy and the more so because while they are equally in some cases exceeding our agricultural exports are not at the same time displacing them. If that our agricultural exports have fallen off so during the past few months, but at the same farmer is getting no less benefit from his crop in the volume of his sales or their value. Due past year our home consumption of wheat and flour amounted in value to five hundred and ten million dollars, which are the highest record. The farmer then is benefited doubly increased export of manufactures, which brings a still larger home market for his own products as the home market is the best market and the farmer the larger price, making his sales more and giving him a quicker return for his labor investment, the result is one which we may all continue. Writing upon this point, the Spread Republican says:
"It is certain, however, that the nation has upon a new era in regard to the export trade manufactures will permanently take a much prominent place relatively than ever heretofore are passing rapidly from a country predo-agricultural to one predominantly manu-It is well that this should be so. It is better manufacture for the outside world than to be its wood and drawers of water, as it were. The easier and more profitable.
"The protective tariff in a general way doubtedly been a powerful agency in bringing this great change."
This indeed is a most open confession for publican to make. To acknowledge that theive tariff is a powerful agency in bringing good, must have been an admission wrung by economic editor in an idle moment, or possibly substitute while away on his vacation. At it is a sign of the times when the most po-Trade paper in the country admits that our manufactures are not only gaining, but gain is due to the operation of our present without any qualification except that we careful and not let that law "over-stay its fulness."
Certainly no more worthy candidate for office ever solicited support in this district. Mr. Smith comes to us as one of the acknowledged leaders in Republican legislative councils, he having been a member of the state senate for several terms. As a public speaker and debater he ranks with the ablest in the state. Moreover, he is sound upon the tariff and other matters of Republican doctrine in this year of grace. He is with the dominant party in his support not only of tariff protection to our local industries and to American labor, but he is in accord with that party in reference to federal aid to national irrigation, protection of our forest area and other problems now before the people of the west, and he is in entire accord with the President on the policies that have made this administration such a conspicuous success in the annals of our country. By far the ablest man who ever stood for Congress in this district, he is entitled to and will doubtless receive enthusiastic support on the part of all true Republicans, as well as many a Democrat hereabout who believes in the principles of protection and prosperity.
The Columbia marching club will be over from Santa Ana, together with a delegation of citizens of that city and neighboring places, and Republicans from the entire countryside are looked for and will be made welcome at this opening gun of the 1904 campaign.
Clyde Bishop of Santa Ana will also deliver an address, and the chairman of the meeting will be Richard Melrose, Republican candidate for presidential elector in the Eighth district.
It seems absolutely impossible to satisfy the Outs, no matter what may be the condition of business, the condition of the treasury, or any of the various other conditions connected with our government and its people. It is only a few years since they were terribly alarmed over the surplus in the United States treasury. Mr. Cleveland, particularly in his famous free trade message of 1887, called attention to the great surplus which we then had and which was being augmented annually, and in response to that message the Republican party enacted the McKinley law and our excess receipts were considerably cut down in the following two or three years. Again, after the close of the Spanish war, when the account had been settled and our receipts were beginning to exceed our expenditures by nearly one hundred millions of dollars annually, the Republican party twice reduced the taxation, resulting in a decrease of revenue of considerably more than one hundred millions of dollars, and yet a surplus has continued from year to year, and Uncle Sam's balance has always been on the
We know a leading Santa Ana Democrat place in the inner councils of that party give right to be regarded as one of the party spirits in Orange county, who is going to Roosevelt, because, as he says, the Presidency of a Democrat than is Alton B. Parker says this Santa Ana Democrat, "is a creat trusts, while the trust magnates are afraid velt."
Therefore, he declares, Roosevelt must cert and Parker a Republican. We have our Santa Ana friend speaks ironically there is no doubt that his vote will be cast of Roosevelt. Other political subjects are his attention; trusts are not the only issue campaign. The country is prosperous and ing money. He is sleek and fat and clothes, and looks like a trust magnate he is building a $5000 residence and looks like prosperity has struck him a resound and we are glad of it, for he is one of them in the county. And with his vote for several other Democratic votes at the county the President.
Less than a week remains for voters they wish to vote at the general election. Registration closes September 28th day next. We have a letter from the state central committee in which it is urged Republicans see to it that they fail not This will be the last reminder of this imp duty." But now we are confronted with what seems to be a slight deficit, although it is by no means certain that by the end of the fiscal year we shall not come out with a balance to our credit in the United States Treasury. But at the same time the slight deficit of July and August form a very fruitful theme for the Democratic editors who evidently desire to drop the great issues of the campaign and harp upon the insignificant result of our receipts and expenditures. To begin with, the declaration that we had a deficit of over forty millions of dollars during the last fiscal year is absolutely misleading, if not positively false. The expenditure of fifty millions of dollars in payment toward the Panama canal alone accounted for that apparent deficit and was simply an investment, much the same as a man in prosperous times would withdraw a few hundred dollars from his bank account in order to put an addition on his house.
One of the interested observers of the war raging in Asia is Mr. Dubbel, father of Rev. Dubbel of the Catholic parish. Mr. Dubbel knows what it is to engage in battle, having been in the German army in three wars, of 1860, 1866 and 1870, against Denmark, Austria and France respectively. He participated in the battles of Gravelott, Sedan and Strasburg in the war of 1870, and in the war against Austria marched with the invading army through Saxony until the spires of Vienna were discernable. Then came the capitulation of the Austrian forces and the end of the war. At Sedan he was in the investing army about that city, in which Napoleon and McMahon were taken prisoners. In his declining years and not too robust health he is engaged as sexton of St. Boniface church. He is particularly well informed upon the war in the East, and has great praise for the fighting qualities of the Japanese.
Impeachable honor. His record is notably the objection I have to him is that he Now, if he should have been President who was blown up in Havana harbor, he would have war against Spain before the sun set that day.

The war with Spain has passed into his patriotism's-sake let us hear no more such criticism of the President.
Once more, how many Democratic walnut Orange county consider the 3 cent duty walnuts a "robber tariff"? How many of their party's policy to wipe these laws off book? How many want to see Bordeaux rerby by the shipload in New York, offering at 5 o'clock.
If the walnut crop is worth to Orange three quarters of a million dollars, and can be marketed at half the California ricoin of the realm would be sacrificed to Oak walnut men?
When Castle was elected to Congress ago, Democratic nut growers of this valleys petitions praying that he use his influence this portion of the "robber tariff," and these petitions to a man, too.
The Republican party says this tariff Democratic party says it's wrong. On why Democratic walnut growers?

R. M. Teague of the San Dimas nur series has received an order from an orange grower at Jaffa in Palestine for a number of Washington naval trees. The trees will be divested of all foliage and packed in moss. Mr. Teague has been very fortunate with his export shipments. A short time ago he received word from South Africa that out of 40,000 trees shipped to that country only fifteen had died. It is stated by the Jaffa man that he has found two native naval orange trees growing under the walls of Jericho, and that the oranges are seedless and juicy. He has planted 350 acres to Jaffa oranges and intends to plant 3,000 acres with Washington navals and Jericho navals.
EXCURSIONS TO THE CIRCUS
Special excursion rates on all lines of travel have been arranged for by the management of Ringling Brothers' World's Greatest Shows, and those who wish to go to Santa Ana, where this great circus exhibits Oct. 1st, can do so at very little expense. This will be the only point in this vicinity where the show will exhibit this season, and no one should miss the opportunity to witness it. Ringling Brother's circus has been the leading arctic exhibition of America for years, but the show has never been permitted to rest upon its reputation. Although it long ago passed the point of competition, every season sees a greater and grander show. This year's performance is entirely new, and entails the combined efforts of 375 wonderful artists in the equestrian, gymnastic, equilibristie, acrobatic and aerial line, together with forty famous clowns and hundreds of lesser lights. Six hundred and fifty horses are used and a marvelous trained animal department is presented. The circus this season is greatly enlarged by the spectacular production of Jerusalem and the Crusades, a pantomimic presentation of the well known and beautiful historical narrative of the Crusaders. The vast menagerie has among hundreds of features the only living pair of giraffes, the first baby elephant successfully bred and reared in America, and the only rhinoceros in captivity. There is a gorgeous revival of the Roman hippodrome races, and many other stupendous features in this great circus. Circum days open with a brilliant street parade, three miles in length. Don't fail to see it.

The Only Preparations General Taylor Made For Defeat.
Santa Anna was the greatest military leader the Mexicans have ever known. Santa Anna with 25,000 veterans went to the battle of Buena Vista with the avowed purpose of exterminating the entire army of the United States, and there was no doubt in the mind of Santa Anna that this great feat could be accomplished with comparative ease. General Taylor, with his 5,000 men, prepared for the unequal contest, and not only defended himself successfully, but won a substantial victory from his aggressive antagonists and drove them from the battlefield of Buena Vista.
Some time after the battle was fought and the Mexican war concluded General Taylor was criticised for having made no preparations for the retreat of his army in the event of defeat. General Taylor promptly replied: "I made every preparation necessary for the battle of Buena Vista. I wrote my will, and so did nearly every man in my army. If we had not won that battle, we would have needed no lines of retreat. It was, from our standpoint, victory or annihilation. The only preparation necessary for the contingency of defeat at Buena Vista was that we should write our wills."
Cloths For Presents In Japan.
Of one singularly attractive and decorative detail of Japanese daily life little is known in this country. Yet it touches all classes, from nobles to coolies—the use of present cloths. These are squares of all sorts of materials, from twenty inches to two yards across. They are used to tie up the gifts which are exchanged on all possible occasions. After the presentation of the gift the cloth is removed and returned to the giver by a servant. These cloths are handed down from generation to generation, and among them are found some of the finest specimens of the old embroidery and dyeing. Many of the square pieces of Japanese embroidery used in this country for pillow and table covers were originally used as coverings for presents—Boude Beautiful.

An Ancient Foe
To health and happiness is Scrofula—as ugly as ever since time immemorial.
It causes bunches in the neck, disfigures the skin, inflames the mucous membrane, wastes the muscles, weakens the bones, reduces the power of resistance to disease and the capacity for recovery, and develops into consumption.
"A bunch appeared on the left side of my neck. It caused great pain, was lanced, and became a running sore. I went into a general decline. I was persuaded to try Hood's Sarsaparilla, and when I had taken six bottles my neck was healed, and I have never had any trouble of the kind since." Mrs. K. T. Snyder, Troy, Ohio.

Slightly more than 4000 names have already been enrolled at the County Clerk's office on the new Great Register, and it is estimated that before registration closes the 28th inst., the list will number over 6000. On the last Great Register there were 5200 names so that the increase in voters for the last two years will be approximately 1000, most of them coming from new settlers in the county.

THE TRICKY GROUSE.
He Has Hundreds of Devices For Eluding the Hunter.
The grouse has a hundred tricks of defense. It will lie still until the hunter is within a yard of it, then soar straight upward in his front, towering like a woodcock; again, it will rise forty yards away, and the sound of its wings is his only notice of its presence. It will cower upon a branch under which he passes, and his cap will be not more than a foot below it as he goes, and, though it has seen him approaching, it will remain quiescent in fear until his back is turned. It will rush then, and when he has slew himself hurriedly around he will catch only a glimpse of a brown broad wing far away.
Wounded and falling in the open, it will be found—if it is found at all—with the telltale speckles of its breast against the trunk of some brown tree, against which its feathers are indistinguishable, and the black ruff about the neck of the male will be laid against the darkest spot of the bark. Often it will double like a fox; often as a man draws near it will spring noiselessly into some spruce and hide until he passes, dropping then to the ground and continuing its feeding; often, too, it will decline to take wing, though unhurt, and will run fast for half a mile—so fast that the most expert woodsman will be unable to keep pace with it. This it will only do on leafy ground and never when snow would betray its tracks.—Outing.
FEAT OF A MACGREGOR.
Wonderful Physical Strength That Was Used to Good Purpose.
Sir William MacGregor was the hero of such an adventure as one expects ordinarily to read about only in fiction of a certain hue.
The steamship Syria, with a lot of Indian coolies on board, struck on a rock about twelve hours from Suva, the capital of Fiji.
Dr. MacGregor, then acting colonial secretary, organized a relief expedition; clambered over a broken mast that was the only path to the emigrants and again and again returned with a man or woman on his back and sometimes a child, held by its clothes between his teeth.
A man of vast physical strength, MacGregor wanted it all for his final feat. Down below on the reef was a woman who had fallen overboard, had got at the spirits and was mad with

The steamship Syria, with a lot of Indian coolers on board, struck on a rock about twelve hours from Suva, the capital of Fiji.
Down below on the reef was a woman who had fallen overboard, had got at the spirits and was mad with drink. The captain of the ship and a police officer who had gone after her were being swept out to sea. MacGregor slid down a rope, caught the knot of the woman's hair in his teeth and with his hands seized the two men and dragged them both into safety. He went back to Suva in a borrowed suit of pajamas, having left all his clothes and a good deal of his skin on the coral reef.
Modest, like many heroes, MacGregor left himself out of his own report, and it was from the governor that the queen first heard the whole story.
Woes of an Editor.
When a newspaper tells the simple truth about a bad man who is trying to get into a public place where he can steal, the truth is called "attack." If when the same man runs for office the facts of his past career are printed to show the people what they may expect, the editor who prints these facts is abused, and the rascal poses as a martyr. When a man turns out wrong, as the editor said he would, if the editor says his prophecies came true, the people accuse him of persecuting a man and "kicking him when he is down." Yet if the paper says nothing about bad men who are trying to rob the people say that the editor is bought off and that he has taken hush money.—Emporia Gazette.
Imitation Perfumes.
"It may seem peculiar," said a perfumery manufacturer, "but perfumes are adulterated and imitated just as baking powder and other things are. For instance, we make a high grade carmation pink perfume from the flowers themselves. This, of course, is costly, but the perfume retains its odor, and a handkerchief that has been scented with it will retain the perfume even after it is washed. A hot iron will bring out the odor again. Now, a perfume that is just as good to all first appearances and that for ten minutes will have the same effect can be made out of the oil of cloves mixed with alcohol. At the end of ten minutes the odor will be gone."—Milwaukee Sentinel.

It Is Good to Laugh.
Health, an English publication, says: "It is good to laugh. There is probably not the remotest corner or little inlet of the minute blood vessels of the body that does not feel some wave let from the great convulsion produced by hearty laughter shaking the central man. The blood moves more rapidly. Probably its chemical, electric or vital condition is distinctly modified. It conveys a different impression to all the organs of the body as it visits them on that particular mystic journey when the man is laughing from what it does at other times. The time may come when physicians shall prescribe to a torpid patient so many peals of laughter to be undergone at such and such a time."

Incident of the French Revolution.
Mme. de Crequey, a French court lady who was imprisoned in the Luxembourg at the time of the revolution, tells in her diary of "a small, pale woman" who never said a word for the two or three days she was in the same room, never went to bed, but sat in a chair watching a casket she had brought with her. "One morning on returning from the yard," she says, "we found the little woman gone and only the casket remaining. A jailer came in about an hour after to fetch it. Mme. Buffaut boldly asked him whether the owner would return. His only answer was to pass his hand across the back of his neck. Then he proceeded to break open the casket. It contained a man's bloody shirt, without a collar, which was always cut off before an execution; also a handful of silky black hair and a piece of paper on which was written, 'For my mother.' Our jailer never would tell us the name of this unhappy woman, nor did we ever discover who and what her son was."
