Anaheim Weekly Gazette PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY HENRY KUCHEL, Editor and Proprietor THURSDAY ... August 11, 1904 Chairman Stone of the Republican state central committee has forwarded a communication to the various county central committees in the Eighth congressional district, declaring that the congressional convention for this district must assemble at Santa Cruz, according to the call of the state committee. Moreover, such counties as have chosen separate delegations to the state and congressional conventions will not require the services of the latter, inasmuch as, under the call of the state committee, only state delegates will be eligible to the state and congressional convention. Accordingly the convention called for Santa Ana is off the boards. Col. Stone's letter is as follows: To the Chairman Eighth Congressional District Committee, Fullerton, Cal. Dear Sir: I am informed by the Secretary of State that a petition for calling a congressional convention for the Eighth district was not received within the time required by law for filing; therefore, the delegates chosen to the state convention within the Eighth congressional district will constitute the congressional district convention in accordance with the call issued by this committee and also conforming to the statute. These delegates must meet at the place of holding the state convention for organization, after the state convention has passed upon their credentials. The convention may then adjourn to such time and place as suits the pleasure of the delegates, provided always that the nomination of a candidate for Congress shall be made in time for filing the certificate of such nomination in the office of the Secretary of State, within the time required by law. No other delegates from any political subdivision of the Eighth congressional district will be eligible to act in said convention. Respectfully yours, Signed, Geo. Stone, Chairman. The call of the congressional committee is, it will be seen, of no effect, and its apportionment of delegates, consequently, is swept aside. Thus Ward gains two votes in San Diego and Smith loses one in Tulare. No proxies will be allowed, but delegations present may cast the votes of absentees. The convention meets at Santa Cruz August 25th. Tomorrow Company E departs for the annual encampment of two weeks duration in San Luis Obispo county. Indications are that a full complement of officers and men will respond to the call, and doubtless Gen. McArthur will have no cause to regret the presence of the home company upon the tented field. E. I. Tolle of the Pacific Electric railway, while town this week stated the company had about close up deals for right of way through Garden Grove, and that work upon the air line to Los Angeles through that section would probably begin in the near future. Transfers of realty at Santa Ana, along the proposed line of road, tend to confirm the story that work up it will soon begin. Mr. Tolle also stated the Pacific Electric railway would undoubtedly run from Santa Ana through this city and Fullerton to a junction with the line at Whittier, but as to the precise time for ginning work upon this line he would not positively agree. People at La Habra have done much to delay work on this line, in their attempt to extort high prices easements through their properties. The company does not stand for highway robbery of this sort, and they rests of the public generally throughout the valley are thus held up pending the pleasure of the La Hacienda spoilsmen. C. L. Green is nearing the end of the raspberry picking season, which has kept him busy during these six weeks. He has shipped considerably in excess 1000 crates, from seven acres. These crates netted $1.50 per crate. After berries are shipped Mr. Green will later in the season give attention to winter peaches or other vegetables. Mr. Sheldon is the largest berry shipper in neighborhood and has done exceedingly well with berries the present season. It is estimated that in neighborhood of 15,000 crates have been shipped this point. As soon as the season closes we shall interesting figures concerning shipments of berries growers at this point. We acknowledge receipt of the twentieth annual alogue of the College of Medicine of the University Southern California. This institution was founded in Los Angeles in 1885, and embraces in its faculty so far most eminent specialists in the country. All others of wide reputation we note the name of Dr. D. Babcock, A. M., M. D., who is secretary of the college and professor of diseases of the eye, nose and ear. Babcock has an extensive acquaintance throughout section, and is held in esteem not only for his eminence in his profession but for the many excellent traits that characterize him. Major Driffel, straw boss for Oxnard up Vero way, used to live in Anaheim, and was known to boys as a Democrat with a tendency to diabetes. The major changed his beverage from sour mash to ia he paved the way for changing his politics, and now said to be a Republican shouter from away All of which pleases, being in conformity with their slide generally observable toward the grand old If we mistake not Driffel was a candidate for office... The call of the congressional committee is to see, of no effect, and its apportionment of delegates, consequently, is swept aside. The encampment is for the purpose of imparting military instruction, and for the first time in the history of the state the national guard goes into camp along with the regular army. The course of instruction which the boys are to receive will be of lasting value not only to themselves individually, but to the country as a whole for such knowledge in possession of the defenders of the nation cannot but be regarded as an advantage to the civilian in every walk of life. We have no patience with those who berate the tendency of the times toward militarism, so called. The tide sets rapidly toward incultating the martial spirit into the breast of patriotic youth of the land. The history of the country, from Yorktown to Santiago, points to this martial spirit on many a battlefield. It is idle to deny that our boys are coming to be, what their fathers and grandfathers were, scrappers from away back. The timid need have no fear of the liberties of the people suffering abridgment at their hands. On the contrary, quite the reverse Let us hope, then, that the encampment will be mutually helpful to regulars and guardsmen, and that when the boys return it will be with no lessened respect for the land of the free and the home of the brave. Another orchard tract has changed hands this week, that of George A. Hunter having been purchased by Mrs. Pearson of Los Angeles for $15,000. The place consists of thirty-five acres in walnuts and oranges, the former trees having a maturing crop upon them valued at not less than $2000. With Mr. Rea's sale of his eighty-acre walnut tract for $40,000, this sale records the largest transfer of this class of property hereabout in the history of the community. Both are bargains at the price paid for them, and are easily worth more money. The Rea place, for instance, has $8000 worth of nuts upon the trees. During the past three years $12,000 worth of nuts have been gathered from them. Here we have $20,000 worth of nuts sold in four years—50 per cent on the purchase price. Next year's yield will certainly not fall below the present season's output. Who shall say that this purchase price is not below rather than above, its actual cash value? Where can money find investment at larger increment? There is more activity in realty about the staid old Mother Colony than at any other point in Southern California. We have had faith in the ultimate success of investments here, and these two changes of reality go a long way toward vouching for the truth of the faith there is in us. Capt. A. F. Halpin of the regular army was in town yesterday after an absence of four years, and met with many old-time friends who were glad to welcome him back to his old home. Capt. Halpin commanded Anaheim's crack company G of the national guard, in the days preceding its muster out, and rose to the rank of major in the Seventh regiment. When the regiment disbanded he went back to the ranks, and when Major Driffel, straw boss for Oxnard up Vero-way, used to live in Anaheim, and was known to boys as a Democrat with a tendency to diabetes. The major changed his beverage from sour mash to ia he paved the way for changing his politics, and now said to be a Republican shouter from away All of which pleases, being in conformity with the slide generally observable toward the grand old If we mistake not Driffel was a candidate for office fore the Democratic convention the year he away to the northern beet belt. With faith planted in lithia, Driffel may yet recover from thura snowstorm, and, who knows, may yet get an An order has issued from the superior court transcription of evidence in the suit of Katie Barton vs. Delia B. Rawson for possession of property formerly owned by Tom Cook. The case was filed in 1900, when Henry Peabody was acting as stenographer. He has since gone to Manila employ of the government, and his four-year-old will be sent to him at this late date to be transacted. The case is set for re-trial in the superior court during summer recess. A new banking institution for this city and area for Fullerton point unerringly to the fact that they ley is not only rapidly settling with a desirable citizen, but that outside capitalists regard it as an ing field for investment. Both communities have banks doing a large volume of business, ably officer backed by solid men. That other bankers are like this way for investment is nothing more nor less an acknowledgment of the fact that this section is ahead and keeping up with the procession. The new product of the Union brewing company be on the market in a day or two, and competent pronounce the beverage first-class in every rite There is good reason why this should be so. Messrs sell, Bauer and Fleurer are practical brewers, the bays has been refitted from top bottom with the land and most improved machinery, and the water shown by chemical test to be the best on the coast for manufacture of beer. Success to the meritorious. Theodore Rimpau this week received a letter nouncing the death in Baden-Baden, Germany; only sister, Mrs. Sophia Henneberg, at the age of 76 years. Mr. Rimpau had intended paying her a spring, taking his daughters with him. Mr nig, who went to Europe some time ago, took along her a number of presents for Mrs. Henneberg, sending her relatives here, but the death came before her in Baden-Baden. Mrs. Henneberg's death will interfere with Mr. Rimpau's European trip. We have added a new equipment of type to our office, and are ready to turn out all kinds of comm work with the latest and newest faces o type j received from the foundry. Business houses should us a call when in need of stationery of any sort; also solicit all kinds of book and color printing. Capt. A. F. Halpin commanded Anaheim's crack company G of the national guard, in the days preceding its muster out, and rose to the rank of major in the Seventh regiment. When the regiment was disbanded he went back to the ranks, and when troops were called for at the outbreak of the Spanish war, he enlisted as a private and went north with the regiment of which he had previously been one of the highest officers. His military training and knowledge of the art of fighting soon found favor with army officers, and he rose step by step, until he was appointed second lieutenant of a volunteer company. He went to Manila, where he distinguished himself in the field. After the war he joined the regular army, and is now stationed at Governor's Island, New York, where he goes in a few days to join his company. Capt. Halpin is a soldier and gentleman, and it is always an honor as it is a pleasure to shake him by the hand. In defense of President Roosevelt's famous pension order making age conclusive as to disability, the Republican campaign committee will circulate hundreds of thousands of copies of Pension Commissioner Ware's report, which is now being printed. An endeavor will be made to show that the result of the order was not a raid on the treasury, but the making smooth of the path of deserving veterans. Advance figures from the report show that between April 13th, the date on which the order went into force, and June 30th, the end of the fiscal year, there were 3859 original pensions granted under this order and 14,768 increased. About 40,000 applications were pending on June 30th. The engagement is announced of Miss Eva Lyons of Anaheim and Morris Smith, a prosperous young rancher of Orangethorpe. The wedding will take place late in September. Miss Lyons is a music teacher and a popular young lady in Anaheim social circles. After an extended wedding trip in the north the young people will make their home on the Smith ranch. We have added a new equipment of type to our office, and are ready to turn out all kinds of comm work with the latest and newest faces o type j received from the foundry. Business houses should us a call when in need of stationery of any sort, also solicit all kinds of book and color printing. Tic printers are employed, and satisfaction guar as to prices and quality of work. Flint seems to have made a sprint in the Los A primaries. Bard was snowed and is practically the fight, his only supporters in Southern California pearing to be Gen. Otis, Jim McFadden and Jim Let the procession proceed. Several Los Angeles men are reported to have disappeared. All of the candidates for United senator were, however, up to the time of going to still doing business at the old stand. A Los Angeles capitalist is quoted as saying there is any amount of money in that pueblo to in bearing walnut orchards in this neighborhood per acre. H. Clay Kellogg writes from San Francisco that contemplates sailing for Honolulu, and probably this time is on the bounding billows. We hope Vladivostok squadron may not overhaul his ship confiscate him as contraband. The Orange county Democratic convention m Santa Ana on Saturday. A candidate for assembly will be nominated, and delegates elected to the seial, congressional and state conventions. Fritz Rhumann and his niece, Mrs. Peter Syr turned last evening from a three months' visit tives in Germany. They report a pleasant trip and glad to be home again. Local Jottings of Interest TURNERS' PICNIC The Turn Verein of this city will have a picnic at Columbia Grove on Sunday. Delegations of Turners from Los Angeles and elsewhere will be present and an enjoyable outing is anticipated. Dancing during the afternoon in the pavilion, and athletic games, for which valuable prizes will be offered. The new brew of the Union Brewery will be on tap and the opening of the establishment will be duly celebrated in the most approved style. NATIONAL GAME. At Athletic park on Sunday the Hamburgers of Los Angeles, defeated Olinda by the score of 12 to 8. Up to the eighth inning the score stood 12 to nothing, but with two men out the foothill pirates fell on Garcia's delivery, swatting it to all points of the compass. Seven runs were amassed before the slaughter terminated. In the ninth the oil men again fell upon the foreigner, but he was withdrawn from the box, and the first victory of Hamburger over Olinda was recorded. Olinda plays the Owls of Los Angeles at Athletic park on Sunday next. Art Crippa, former pitcher, and one of the best all around men in the Olinda team, who has not been playing with the boys in the past two months, will again be on the diamond on Sunday. Sunday Closing A meeting of citizens favoring the closing of saloons on Sunday was held in the city hall on Thursday evening. The committee having in charge the petition calling for an election to vote upon the question was empowered to continue its labors and to present the same to the city trustees at their next meeting. The meeting agreed to pay expenses of holding the election, and it was stated that persons signing the petition will not therefore be expected or required to vote in favor of Sunday closing should it be brought to a vote. Those favoring Sunday closing feel that a change in public sentiment has taken place regarding the matter since the municipal election in April, and that if brought to a vote the movement will be approved by a majority of the people. On June 15th the Santa Fe ran a special excursion to the World's Fair at St. Louis. The party was personally conducted all the way, and spent an entire day viewing the Grand Canyon in Arizona. That the excursion was a success, and the Grand Canyon a revelation is vouched for in the letters of the participants to their friends here and to the press. As a happy sequel to the event the Santa Fe has announced another excursion of the same character for Wednesday, Sept. 7th, the numerous particulars of which may be had from any Santa Fe agent, or from Jno.
