The greatest political ingrate in Orange county is John P. Greeley. For months past he has had his hammer out knocking Melrose for the senatorship. This because, as he is quoted as saying, Melrose did not do more for Greeley in his fight two years ago for state superintendent of public instruction. Melrose went to the state convention in support of Greeley and personally interceded for him with the San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sacramento and other big delegations in that convention. The organization vote was cast for Greeley, who had made a tiptoe campaign of it, first coqueting with Flint and then scraping up to Gage. However, with the organization vote thrown to him, he was defeated by a few votes, when nobody in Orange county a month before thought he had even a chance to look in.
Moreover, Greeley has been an office seeker ever since the organization of Orange county fifteen years ago. He was a candidate at the first election ever held in the county, and has been a candidate for office at every election since then, bar none. The first man Greeley ever asked to support him was Melrose, in this city fifteen years ago. Such support was freely given that support continued with each succeeding election, until the people tired of this perpetual office seeker and he was dropped, although Melrose stayed with him to the end. Greeley has repaid the man who gave him bread with a nice little hammer. Greeley has his political kite in the sky, but if he doesn't get his beautiful pink whiskers trimmed we miss our guess.
John N. Anderson of Santa Ana was nominated for senator from the Thirty-ninth senatorial district at the Orange convention. Although the northern portion of the county opposed his nomination, Mr. Walker of Buena Park, himself one of those opposing him, stated the ease in county convention most aptly when, Anderson having won by a slight majority, he moved to make the nomination unanimous. Those Republicans who opposed Anderson's nomination are now his steadfast supporters. They made a brave fight, and accept defeat with equanimity. A United States senator is to be chosen, and while we are not of those who see nothing in Southern California but Bard, nevertheless even an outspoken supporter of that gentleman is better than a political opponent. We favor the choice of the Republican caucus, no matter what the name of the nominee
It amuses to hear the story attributed to Senator Caldwell, to the effect that he was not an aspirant to re-election at Saturday’s convention, but when we call the resolutions adopted by the Riverside convention requesting Orange county to endorse him; we read in the Riverside Press the statement that delegates from that county hoped the Orange county delegation would “recognize the able services of Sen Caldwell,” and the San Bernardino Sun deploring gentleman’s defeat, we imagine the Senator’s “effacement,” as one of the Riverside delegates put was not so much due to a theory as to the condition we confronted him. The Los Angeles Express, referring Caldwell’s defeat, avers that it was brought about by hiking out of the caucus which named Senator Peirre for re-election. This is so wide of the truth that Express should investigate Orange county politics fore again venturing an opinion upon matters which knows nothing whatever about. The whole story Caldwell’s defeat is told in the numerical superiority this county over Riverside. Orange county wants on that office, and “got shut” of Caldwell for no reason.
Politics have cleared somewhat in Orange county during the fortnight, and out of the smoke of battle R. Amerige of Fullerton comes forth as the Republican nominee for the assembly and John Anderson of Ana as that party’s candidate for state senator.
Is yet to be chosen a candidate for representation Congress, and vigorous campaigning is being done the two aspirants, Senator Smith of Kern and Seward of San Diego. The congressional convention meet at Santa Cruz August 26th, at which time place the state convention will be held for seven presidential electors and alternates. No word has during the week about adjourning the congressional convention to Santa Ana, at which place the convention was originally called by the congressional committee meet August 16th. While both Smith and Washburn quoted as being favorable to adjourning the conference to the latter place, it would not surprise any of nomination were made at Santa Cruz and an end of the struggle.
The Democracy have as yet made no move in the party’s convention together in this county. Maries will be held by that party, the convention in this city in May adjourning to meet at some date in Santa Ana.
The thirty-ninth senatorial district Republicanvention at Orange on Saturday adopted resolution oring the candidacy of Thos. R. Bard for United senator, and voted down instructions to the ratification for state senator to go into a Republican legislature at Sacramento. The Republican county con

The two northern districts, polling within a few votes of a clear majority of the convention, opposed the nomination, but, echoing the words of Mr. Walker, now move to make it unanimous.
Once again have the horse politicians at the county seat given the rubes from the interior the "double-cross," to use a euphonism of the day. This was rather to be expected, for there is not a man of political prominence at Santa Ana but who desires a political office. Indeed plans for the campaign two years hence are said to be already partially mapped out, allotting to each of the courthouse aggregation another term of four years at the public crib. That is to say, those officials hailing from the classic precincts of Santa Ana are classed as the preferred lot, the other fellows being left in readiness to break for the hills. It is high time this Truthful Jeems and men of his ilk should be relegated to the rear. They are in politics for profit, always itching to corral something for themselves—always ready, by fair means or foul, to down the man from the country. We can cite dozens of cases, and it has come to be a political axiom that a Santa Ana man will beat an outside man every time. Let those who think they can disprove this assertion cite a single instance supporting them. How long will the country folk, who comprise three-fourths of the county's voting strength, permit this ragtime farce to continue?
Jim McFadden legging for Anderson, not that he loves Bard more but Perkins less, provides a spectacle for angels at a weeping bee. This reputable old gentleman, who is now entering upon the period of his dotage, used to be the steadfast friend of California's senior senator, and he therefore had much to say concerning the distribution of Federal patronage throughout the county, and even so far away as San Berdoo. Perkins had no acquaintances in Orange county other than Truthful Jeems, and the latter considered Perkins the best of political performers. However, on a fatal day the two fell out, all over an office, and McFadden has since had his knife drawn to take the senator's scalp. He ordered Caldwell to bolt the Republican senatorial caucus at Sacramento two years ago, to the Riversider's eternal disgrace. What base political scullduggery is he up to now?
A mass meeting of business men and citizens was held at Miller's hall last evening to discuss the moral and progressive interests of the city. The meeting was a result of the street fair held here on Saturday and Sunday, under the pretended auspices of the business men and citizens of Anaheim. We have not a report of the meeting, as our forms go to press before the hour of meeting. But just the same the street fair has left a bad taste in the mouth that will require several days to
The thirty-ninth senatorial district Convention at Orange on Saturday adopted resolution ordering the candidacy of Thos. R. Bard for United senator, and voted down instructions to the vote for state senator to go into a Republican legislative caucus at Sacramento. The Republican county commission at Santa Ana the week before, adopts lions favoring Bard's candidacy for re-election also voted, without a dissenting vote, to instruct nominee for the assembly to go into the Republican legislative caucus. Hence Mr. Amerige will, in every election, go into caucus, and Mr. Anderson, shall be successful at the polls, will remain out of it, low the instructions passed by the senatorial convention. If the caucus be a movement favoring Fargo county will thus have a divided membership legislature, one favoring Flint, the other Bard county's delegates to the senatorial convention and six for and against the caucus resolution.

Berries of all kinds are being shipped from this city to many points in Southern Los Angeles, San Diego, Redlands and other areas in the market daily for large consignments. A dollar cents per crate is realized for them. The Hiding houses along the railway lines are served ries from this point, as well as early melons tables of all kinds. But just the same the street fair has left a bad taste in the mouth that will require several days to dispel. It is our understanding that these street fair people desire to play a "return engagement" here, having cleared up quite a wad of the needful. It is to be hoped vigorous measures may be taken to flank them before they enter the city, to the end that decency and morality may prevail, and that the unseemly goings-on may not be repeated here.
City Clerk Merritt’s annual report shows the total assessed valuation of the city to be $570,193, exclusive of railroads, which last year were assessed by the state board of equalization at $66,809. Last year's assessment footed up $552,057, which shows an increase of $18,136. With the railroad assessment added, the total assessed valuation equals $637,002. Figures have not yet been received from the state board, but are expected in a few days. The increase in value of residences and improvements is $13,656, and personal property increased $4480. Eighteen new residences were assessed, and two residences building but not completed March 1st were not assessed. Since March building activity has continued, and scarcely a day passes without plans being made for erection of additional residences. The town seems to have struck her pace, and is forging ahead rapidly.
Senator Caldwell was at the Orange convention, and many were the friends to whom he extended the glad mit. But this is not a Riverside year in the politics of the Thirty-ninth, and his name was not presented to the convention. Caldwell had the honor of being referred to as having “self-effaced” himself, and the convention let it go at that.
County Clerk Phelps of Riverside secured judgment against the Los Angeles Times in the amount of $12,000 for libel. That printing contract will have some fat fried out of it. Huh!
The story attributed to Senator Bernardino Sun deploring that he imagined the Senator's "selfie" the Riverside delegates put it, theory as to the condition which Los Angeles Express, referring to what it was brought about by his name, named Senator Perkins also wide of the truth that the Orange county politics be opinion upon matters which it regard about. Bond Issue Lost
A vote of 200 to 70 was polled Wednesday against the proposed bond issue of $10,000 for the La Bolsas Union High School district, comprising nine of the grammar districts west of the river. The money was to be used in the erection of a building which had been decided to be located at Bolsa, and the defeat of the bonds is ascribed to the fact that Westminster and Garden Grove residents objected to having the school at Bolsa and accordingly voted against raising the money to build it.

Talbert Elopement.
Mongora Morta, a young Spanish lad of Talbert, is in danger of landing behind the walls of San Quentin if he is captured. On the Fourth of July, Morta, who is only 18, went with his senorita to Long Beach. The mother reported the affair to the authorities but no warrant was issued until a few days ago when one was secured in Los Angeles. It was learned that the youthful lovers had taken up their abode in Whittier.
Evidently hearing that the authorities were looking for him, Morta went to Talbert to see the mother and see if the more Eastern Excursions
