July 14, 1904 One of the important acts of Saturday's Republican convention will be the selection of delegates to the Eighth Congress District convention. An effort is being made to swing the delegation to Ward of San Diego. We say nothing against this gentleman personally, but it would be outrageous to nominate any man from that county whose hands are so deeply dyed with the red blood of recent political treachery. San Diego is responsible for the election of Castle. It knifed to defeat its own candidate, Bowers. That county failed ignominiously in its support of Daniels. These things are known to all men. And yet we have Republicans in Orange county who seemingly favor rewarding this species of party heresy. Doth Republicans of Orange county believe San Diego has earned the right to claim the nominee for congress? Shall we condone its offenses, and be led like lambs again to the slaughter? Or shall we be men and say to the political heretics of the south, the time is not yet ripe for rewards to such base party treachery. No, a thousand times, no! Ward is understood to be the candidate of the railroad, but that should cut but very little ice on the part of Mr. Hetebrink that he future discontinue the sale of butter to priests. This is not because there does not active demand for it, for never in the quarter that this famous dairy has been furnishing customers with butter has the output been of grade or the demand for it greater. Mr. Hetebrink has decided to sell his cows, and having an competency will spend the evening of life in at the old home, under his own vine and fig tree miss the weekly calls of the dairy-wag its wealth of butter and other good things, putting at noon Saturdays. The day will have what it used to be, with Dick Hetebrink's vowing "Whoa, Emma!" to the nag we have all acquainted with. This world of ours is not a timual round of pleasure after all. One salutory effect of the success of our school bond election will be found in the announcement of this city in the newspapers of Southern cities and towns. At the unsuccessful held some months ago to vote upon these bonds one of those papers printed an item something this: "Anaheim required to vote $10,000 by the erection of a primary school." Lacking to accommodate our constantly growing school children, our refusal to make suitable for our children was commented upon in a palpably adverse to us. Our esteemed contemners may now refer to this matter again, for we live our second wind and voted upon this question. This city will provide school buildings for its These things are known to all men. Ward is understood to be the candidate of the railroad, but that should cut but very little ice with the voters in this district. Before receiving a vote from Orange county let him answer: "How do you stand on San Pedro harbor?" That is a question of vital importance to Orange county. The railroad is known to be hostile to that port. How does Mr. Ward stand upon that question? Does he believe San Diego harbor should overshadow San Pedro to such an extent that the latter may be lost sight of at Washington. John Sharp Williams, temporary chairman of the Democratic National convention, polled just 1433 votes in his congressional district in Mississippi two years ago, and was elected on that poll, there being no votes cast against him. In the eighth congress district of California 20,000 votes were polled at the same election. There is something radically wrong with bases of representation when Mississippi is given a congressman upon a vote less than one-fourteenth of that required of California. This fact is brought about by the suppression of the colored vote. If Mississippi desires to pass an educational qualification disfranchising the colored voter that is her privilege, but to be permitted to maintain her representation in congress based upon the number of white voters and negroes combined is monstrous. Let Mississippi disfranchise the negro, but let her representation in congress be based upon her actual voting strength, as obtains in California and other states of the union. Those of our readers who have been accustomed to the luxury of, having upon their table butter from Hetebrink's Placentia diary will regret the announce- Orange county’s delegation to the congress convention should be instructed for S. C. Smith far the ablest man who has ever aspired to conquer this district in many years. He is sound opinion to oranges and walnuts and the other interests of this county—let not the orange and walnut of the county be alarmed about that. To sait is less sound upon the Republican principles ofition than his opponent, is to insult the intelligence of the voter. Smith is one of the leaders of the liberal party of the state, and has been so fortunate He has been a leader in the state senate for He is one of California’s ablest stump speaker is just the kind of man this district needs aington. Frank P. Flint of Los Angeles this week nounces himself as a candidate for United States Senator. Mr. Flint is a man of excellent reputation high standing in the community, and a part-time fine fellow. But he will not do for senator. He been in the employ of the Southern Pacific too many years as the company’s attorney to for the place. Why not suggest Mr. Herrin and done with it? Ward is a “safer man” at Washington Smith, because he raises oranges and comes from Diego! Perish the thought! Ward comes from county of political assassins. Vote for Smith never made a promise in his life that he did not How about San Diego? Ask former Congressman Daniels! Sprinkles LOS ANGELES OR T.A.DARIE Agent A Los Angeles Street ANAHEIM, CAL Orange Growers League A number of the largest orange growers of Placentia have formed a Fruit Growers' League and it is to be a branch of the Central League, recently formed in Los Angeles. Isaac Naylor, general field manager of the Central League, delivered a lengthy address in favor of the organization, saying much good could be accomplished if the growers of the organization would work as a unit, and he believed they were willing to stand together. This organization, he said, could accomplish more to bring about a lower freight rate than any other association that had ever been formed, and it would no doubt soon be able to say something about the routing of its fruit. He gave many other reasons why the organization was being formed throughout Southern California and was satisfied that the central union would have some good news to give out to growers soon in regard to lower rates, cheaper iceing and better time across the continent for shipments. A. T. Pendleton was elected president of the local league, and W. E. McFadden secretary, and A. S. Bradford, A. T. Pendleton, A. Pieroti, Wm. Crowther, C. C. Chapman and R. H. Gilman were elected delegates to the next session of the central body, which will be held in Los Angeles in about two weeks. A large committee was appointed to solicit members, and it is believed the local order will soon be one of the largest in Southern California. The growers here ship about 600 carloads of oranges annually. Are you interested in the latest Electrical Massage Treatment for car troubles, if so send your name and address to Dr. W. I.
