A member of the Olinda baseball team in town this week referred to the seeming backwardness of our people in providing a suitable ball park for the accommodation of the many clever amateurs who engage in the pastime here. Not that the diamond at present provided does not offer advantages of one sort and another, but the argument is made that our moneyed classes, in return for the many exhibitions of ball played here, should provide enclosed grounds and seating accommodations, such as are found in other towns throughout Southern California. It is not generally known that the Olinda ball team has but one club (that at Ventura) contesting its title to champions of Southern California. The boys long ago won the championship of Orange and Los Angeles counties and have the past year defeated all comers from near and far. They have no fear of their ability to take the Venturans' measure and will then be undisputed possessors of the proud title of amateur champions.
The boys are looking for a place to play ball the coming season, and Anaheim offers especial inducements to them to 'come and be of us. We like them, we like the game, and are proud of having the champion club with us occasionally. Why not build enclosed grounds and erect a grand stand of sufficient seating capacity to accommodate the crowds gathering to witness the games? It would be a paying venture from the start. Say it required an expenditure of $8000 to procure grounds, fence them and erect seating accommodations. This amount, at 6 per cent, means an outlay of $180 per year. We have seen many games on the local grounds attended by no less than 1500 people. If only half these people paid an admission fee of 25 cents, the amount realized would pay interest on the investment, pay all expenses of the game and leave a comfortable sum for paying off the first installment of the indebtedness upon the grounds. These figures are entitled to consideration by our financiers who take an interest in the town. A goodly sum could be raised annually from signs upon the high board fence enclosing the grounds. Let this matter be taken up and given consideration; our word for it, it would be appreciated by players and public, it would be a good thing for the town, and there would undoubtedly be found a sufficient profit in the venture to maintain excellent ball games here the coming season.
If bonds are voted for erecting a four-room mary school building, as advised by the school trees, the taxation made necessary by such levy amount to about 10 cents on the $100 of property valuation. This was very clearly shown by Mr. Mellwell at one of the mass meetings held at the Central School. The total amount of money to be paid to the bonds, which run for twenty years at 4½ per annum, is $14,000, not $20,000 as stated by contemporary. A property-owner paying taxes on assessed valuation of $1000 would thus pay about in taxes the first year. This would be the last yearly payment he would be called upon to make the reason that $500 of the bonds are paid off each year. Thus the last payment would be only with interest added, or a total of $525. This would make the levy a trifle over 5 cents on the $100 property-owner paying taxes on $1000 would pay twenty years about $14 for the erection of a $1 schoolhouse.
Santa Ana's military company was on Monday tered out of the service, and thus has the exam board paid off a score against Orange county in from the recent regimental election. Recently they pany elected Clyde Bishop captain. He success passed his examination, but the examining board quently refused to issue to him a commission. An election was thereupon called, and Bishop was placed in nomination, the company refusing to another candidate. The examining board, which had to be dominated by former Col. Schrieber, then steps to muster out of service the company, and this action was taken on Monday evening, when the company assembled for its usual weekly drill.
Schrieber was a candidate for election as color of the Seventh regiment at the recent regimental elec Bishop was largely responsible for Schrieber's and with the officers of the other Orange county panies succeeded in bringing about the election of Finley. What effect the mustering out of the co will have upon the Orange county battalion on the regiment is yet to be seen, but it is probable a company will be organized to take the place Santa Ana company. It is proper to state in this section that Bishop desired to step aside and that mit the choice of another captain, but the memorable company to a man, feeling they were in their refused to stand for this course, and the muster proceeded.

San Diego county sustained quite a jar at the meeting of the congressional committee in Los Angeles on Saturday. The committee decided, against emphatic protest from the county to the south, that the basis of representation in the congressional convention be fixed upon the vote for Congressman Daniels two years ago, instead of upon that for Governor Pardee. This cuts the vote of that county down by two. The decision of the committee will meet with a hearty second in every corner of the district, with the possible exception of the county to the south. At the election two years ago San Diego Republicans proceeded to resurrect their little hatchets and go scalping after the party's regularly nominated candidate for Congress. If we recall the figures, Needham was given a majority, four years ago, of 1700 by that county. However, two years ago Daniels failed of a majority, the county returning 100 votes in favor of Smythe. Now this political treachery gets its first rebuke at the hands of the party, and unless all signs fail the second will come at the convention. The Republicans of the Eighth district will not stand for such work by San Diego, and if that county will take this lesson to heart and profit by it, so much the better for all concerned. San Diego repudiated its own congressional candidate eight years ago and elected Castle It failed to support its party candidate two years ago, when it was confidently expected that the county would return a majority for him of 2000 votes. Time has not altogether healed these party wounds, as San Diego will discover one of these days, and then we hope the county will be good.
Advertisements of coast resorts appearing in the Sunday papers give prominence to the new senic line of the Pacific Electric Railway from Long Beach through Alamitos and Anaheim Landing, Bolsa Chica Huntington Beach and other points. However, the interesting feature of these advertisements, at least to those local residents who have discussed future routes of electric railway building in Orange county, is the apparent identification of the Southern Pacific railway line from Newport Beach through Santa Ana and this city to Los Angeles with the new coast route. Reports have appeared in several newspapers the past month to the effect that the Southern Pacific line would be turned into an electric line and be absorbed by the Huntington system. Whatever grounds existed for the story may be dissipated in the report current last week that Huntington people intended building along the Garden Grove survey. This may or may not be the case, and now come various maps showing the two lines in a manner suggesting their being operated together in the near future. Yet after all is said, we shall know where the new lines will be built when the tracklayers arrive; but whatever the course, true it is that the air is filled with
Representative Metcalf of Oakland has been a member of President Roosevelt's cabinet, having made secretary of the Department of Commerce, which position Mr. Cortelyou has just to become chairman of the Republican national committee. This puts one of California's ablest men's cabinets, and does away with the story telegrapher New York some days ago, to the effect that he to the senatorship. Living as he does within a throw of Senator Perkins, his selection as senator out of the question so long as Southern California a candidate of its own for the place. Private talk Washington has been that Metcalf has for some past displaced Senator Perkins in the confidence President. Metcalf is a good man, and he is. If he wants to be senator later on, he may have no seat in 1908. That would be nice.
Richard Eagan, of San Juan, was this week appointed special administrator in the estate of the late McNally by Judge Wilbur, at the request of F.G. McNally, executor under the will. He fixed at $40,000. The total value of the estate for probate has been asked is about $170,000, with additional for personal property. The rentals are fits range about $17,000 a year. The most important property is the beautiful Windermere ranch at na, having a total value of about $89,150. He are 400 acres set out to olives, 160 to lemons, 8 to los, 12 to oranges, and 1000 acres in grain land nature. There are other properties in Orange and counties. The Valencia ranch in Orange county San Juan Capistrano is valued at $20,000. It is some time before matters in Chicago will be acted so that the properties there can be dealt with accordingly.
Announcement is made of the appointment H. Markham to the office and title of vice-president of the Southern Pacific company. In his new position general manager of the lines of the Pacific of the Southern Pacific, to which he was app several weeks ago, Mr. Markham's duties have largely administrative. By being made vice-president of the company he becomes the chief executive of the company on the coast.
Markham will henceforth be the chief op and executive official here, entering upon prairie all of the duties and responsibilities exercised by Kruttschnitt, but within a smaller jurisdiction appointment as vice-president of the Southern is merely in line with the policy to make all teral managers of the Harriman lines vice-prince of their respective companies.

Santa Ana has been selected as the place for holding the Republican convention of the Eighth congressional district, and August 20th the date. This decision was arrived at by the congressional committee at a meeting held at Los Angeles on Saturday. R. Y. Williams, chairman of the Republican county central committee, addressed the committee, tendering an invitation on the part of Santa Ana to hold the congressional convention in that city. Nate Ulm, secretary of the county central committee, also addressed the congressional committee, at conclusion of which a unanimous vote was taken in favor of that city, and the meeting ordered that the usual official call in such cases made and provided be promulgated. Orange county has entertained congressional conventions before, and has a record of nominating none but winning men. There will probably be two candidates after the nomination, but up to the time of going to press last evening it looked like nothing but Smith of Kern.
President Roosevelt was unanimously renominated by the Republican national convention in session at Chicago last week. Senator Fairbanks of Indiana was unanimously chosen for Vice-President. The convention was characterized by harmony in its deliberations. The ticket is regarded on all sides as particularly strong and worthy of the support of the party, east, west, north and south.

Henry Gibbs, proprietor of a blind pig at darkest Santa Ana, was arrested on Monday, charged with illegally selling liquor Saturday. A ranch hand named A. Taylor, who works for A. F. Swift at Talbert, made complaint to the police that he had secured intoxicants in a back room at Gibbs's restaurant, and at the suggestion of the officers he swore to violate the city prohibition ordinance. Gibbs could not be located Saturday evening or Sunday, but his place was invaded and the arrest made. A gunnysack of bottled beer and a jug of whiskey were confiscated and taken to the City Hall to be used as evidence. Gibbs pleaded not guilty, and was released in $200 bonds to appear for trial Thursday at 10 o'clock.
