The Weekly Gazette ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. HENRY KUCHEL, Editor and Proprietor THURSDAY ... June 23, 1904 True, two years ago we supported the candidacy of Senator Nutt of San Diego, while at the present time we doubt the political wisdom of going to that county for another candidate. But that doesn't argue any semblance of a flop, that we can see. It was subsequent to Nutt's campaign that San Diego's cardinal sin was enacted—its failure to support the man at the polls who had defeated its candidate in convention. Instead of supporting Daniels and giving him a majority of 2000, it recanted and gave Smythe a majority of 100. That is not the sort of party ambush to be forgotten in two years. Moreover, if San Diego politics has been characterized by this self same sort of thing in the past, so much the worse for that county. No, we have not flopped on San Diego. The Redlands Citrograph, which some weeks ago supported Senator Ward of San Diego for the congressional nomination, now flops to the standard of Senator Smith of Kern, who will probably survive the shock. But Editor Craig makes various assertions tending to explain his desertion of the San Diego man, and these, while they have been heard before, may be of interest to voters hereabout at this time. In brief, the Citrograph's objection to Ward seems to be that he is "Mr. Herrin's man." We quote a paragraph, as follows: "But it is now an open secret that the San Francisco political boss, Mr. Herrin, of the Southern Pacific, is the power behind the Ward movement. And that 'influence' has not a particle of influence with a large majority of voters in Southern California." Word was passed about Orange county immediately after the meeting of the Republican state convention, where Senator Ward seemed to get well into the anti-Hearst forces of the State Central Committee gained a victory in gaining control of the machinery of that body. It was a contest for the McNab wing against the Hearst-O'Brien faction of the party, and the former won. From the moment the meeting was called to order by B.D. Murphy, chairman of the old committee, the gathering was transformed into a scene of confusion. Mr. Murphy's right to briefly wield the gavel in the preliminary proceeding was disputed, among those voicing their protests being Frank H. Gould, chairman of the state convention, who named the State Committee, and ex-Congressman Gerald They contended that the old committee had ceased to exist and as Mr. Murphy was not a member of the new body, he had no authority. Mr. Murphy held his position however, and ordered the roll called. It then developed that a number of names were missing from the approved by Mr. Gould, and a lively debate ensued. Matters were finally straightened out, however, and to the opposing forces pitted their strength on the back for permanent chairman. M.F.Tarpey led the Hearst-O'Brien forces, while Gavin McNab directed the position. The Hearst people placed in nomination chairman, M.F.Cochrane of Marin county. The McNab faction named T.M.Spellacy of Kern. Spellacy was election-by a vote of 68 to 61. William Canon San Francisco and John C.Ruddock of Mendocino were elected vice-presidents by acclamation. Thomas W. of San Francisco, former registrar of votes, was elected secretary over Al.McCabe. Walsh is a McNab ranch Santa Cruz was selected for the State Convention, August 22 fixed for the date. President Loubet has conferred upon the American Ambassador, Gen.Horace Porter, the Grand Cross the Legion of Honor, which is the highest grade of historic order. It is an honor rarely bestowed, even chiefs of state and Ambassadors, and this is the time it has ever been offered to a representative America. As, under the provision of the constitution, the acceptance of any mark of distinction from a foreign country, even from a republic, requires the approval Congress, final action in the matter will await authorization of that body. Foreign Minister Delcasse cast at the Ambassador's residence and personally presented him with the superb insignia of the grand cross consists of a wide silk band, worn across the brass having an enameled gold cross at the hip, with elaborate silver star to be worn on the right breast. Delcasse accompanied the presentation by an easy expression of the high personal esteem which M.Lopez and himself felt toward the American Republic. grand cross is the highest of the five grades of legion of honor. These consist first, of the chevrons and these, while they have been heard before, may be of interest to voters hereabout at this time. And that 'influence' has not a particle of influence with a large majority of voters in Southern California." Word was passed about Orange county immediately after the meeting of the Republican state convention, where Senator Ward seemed to get well into the calcium light on several occasions, that he was the Southern Pacific candidate, the purpose of that corporation being to interfere in some mysterious manner with the final completion of San Pedro harbor. Senator Ward, when asked relative to his position regarding San Pedro during his recent visit here, affirmed a feeling of friendliness toward the harbor, saying it would receive his support along with his home harbor of San Diego, so far as federal appropriations were concerned. Whether these reflections upon Ward—and we refer to but one of them—are true or not it cannot be doubted circulated matter has had a distinctly bad effect upon the San Diegan, who before getting a vote from Orange county, would certainly have to make categorical answer relative to his attitude toward these reports. But whether the San Diegan's attitude be one of friendliness or not, what objection can be made to that of Senator Smith of Kern, who is sound on San Pedro, as he is sound on the tariff and other political issues of the campaign? He comes to us under no disguises—he's just plain Smith of Kern, and he seems to be good enough for Orange county. Again the electric railway checkerboard is characterized by an unexpected change. The force of graders employed upon the Huntington railway, after completing the grade as far as Huntington Beach, broke camp and returned to Long Beach, leaving a gap uncompleted as far as Newport Beach. Some weeks ago the statement was published in these columns that the electric line would not be constructed to Newport Beach so long as excessive sums were asked for right of way. It was said at that time that a large amount was asked for easements along the projected route between Bolsa Chica and Newport Beach. Since that time, however, it has been given out in well informed circles that the line would be extended to the latter point but it would seem that with the withdrawal of the graders, that part of the line will for the present remain uncompleted. Electric cars are running regularly to Bay City, Anaheim Landing and Huntington Beach, and on Sunday large crowds from Los Angeles made their first trip over the new line. Lots in these new townsites are held at higher figures than rule for city lots in Los Angeles, and many transfers are being made. Many rumors are current regarding the next move of the electric railway graders. One is to the effect that the road will be constructed along the Garden Grove route, another is that the road will come into this city over the Southern Pacific tracks, and a third is to the acceptance of any mark of distinction from a four-country, even from a republic, requires the approval Congress, final action in the matter will await authorization of that body. Foreign Minister Delcasse came at the Ambassador's residence and personally presented him with the superb insignia of the grand cross consists of a wide silk band, worn across the breast having an enameled gold cross at the hip, with elaborate silver star to be worn on the right breast. Delcasse accompanied the presentation by an easy expression of the high personal esteem which M. Lo and himself felt toward the American Republic. Grand cross is the highest of the five grades of legion of honor. These consist, first, of the cheval second, officers; third, commander; fourth, grand officer and fifth, grand cross. The latter is the grade worn by M. Loubet and has been conferred only a few times recent years. That the American Ambassador should have been singled out for this netable honor is considered to be a personal tribute to him and evidence of the cordial sentiments of the French government toward America. Secretary Hay has made up his mind that Tugger the Sultan of Turkey's representative to this government, must fish or cut bait. The Turkish Minister been in this country for three years and has not yet sent nis credentials. In fact, he is only recognized this government through the courtesy of the State department. The President's determination to force Turkish government to pay claims amounting to 2000 for outrages upon American mission stations missionaries in Turkey makes it necessary to hire Turkish Minister here who is accredited. The prime Minister, with oriental cunning, it is said, has failed present his credentials in order that this governor cannot reach the Sultan directly through him. Would be the case if he were accredited. Under present plan our Minister at Constantinople can give nearer the Sultan than the Grand Vizier. To help the collection of indemnity, a navel display is to be by the American fleet in Turkish waters. It was planned to send a fleet of some twenty vessels. President has not fully made up his mind in the matter however, and it is hardly possible that more vessels those in the European squadron will be sent. With naval display the State Department desires to complete direct with the Sultan, and therefore Mr. Hay tells the Turkish Minister that he must present his credentials immediately or else his recall will be demoted of the Sultan and a successor, armed with credence will alone be received by this government. If an assessment of ten cents on the $100 for providing necessary school facilities for our children going to keep home-seekers from settling among they cannot be regarded as very desirable additions to the community. Those are not the kind of payment we should seek to add to our population. Rather us unite the progressive, go-ahead class, the kid people who believe in building schoolhouses and other necessary improvements. Let us have seen with a dollar in their jeans to spend, rather than poverty-stricken chap who would object to this itemal charge for providing a necessary school living. the withdrawal of the graders, that part of the will for the present remain uncompleted. One is to the effect that the road will be constructed along the Garden Grove route, another is that the road will come into this city over the Southern Pacific tracks, and a third is to the effect that the next move will be from Whittier through La Habra and Placentia, up the river canyon to Riverside. That Huntington has a vast amount of work in contemplation hereabout is indisputable, but just where operations will begin it is impossible to say. Two new companies were incorporated in Los Angeles on Tuesday, under the names of the Westminster Gun club and the Westminster Land and Water company. The same people are interested in both concerns, the gun club being organized for promotion of sports and the other to conduct a real estate business among its incorporators. The directors of the gun club are J. M. Elliott, Henry E. Whitlock, F. E. Robinson, John G. Johnson, C. W. Gates, H. S. Vau Dyke and W. R. Leeds of Los Angeles. The land company is capitalized at $25,000 and all has been subscribed, twenty-five people being interested. The city trustees at the meeting on last week discussed the propriety of shutting down the electric light system during the summer at midnight. There was objection to the proposal, however, and the matter went over without action. It would create a distinctly unfavorable impression abroad if this step should be taken, and it is to be hoped council will not douse the glim until sunup. C. C. Chapman, chairman of congressional committee of the eighth district, has issued a call for a meeting of the committee to assemble at Los Angeles on Saturday next. At this meeting the time and place of the congressional convention will be agreed upon, and indications are that Santa Ana will be selected, the date being probably some time in August. Little interest seems to attach to the school election July 8th to vote bonds for erecting a room primary school building. The meeting order to assemble at the Central school on Monday even lacked a quorum, and those present adjourned out action. It is to be hoped that a large vote will polled at the election, and that the proposition vanced by the school trustees will be approved by voters. Additional school room is an imperfect necessity, and should be provided. The approach manner of meeting this condition is the issuance of bonds, and the amount asked for should be without opposition. Orange will be the first of the four South counties voting in the approaching Congressional convention. It will lead off, so to speak, for the countrys furnishing the Republican majorities. This county has, therefore, an excellent opportunity for controlling to the making of a bit of political history, should not fail to embrace that opportunity about settled that Orange county will have no candidate to offer, and in that event the man to vote C. S. Smith of Kern, who wears no corporation coat is sound on San Pedro harbor, right on the tariff other political issues. Orange county should be the ball rolling with twelve votes for Smith. The Republican State Central Committee met in Francisco on Saturday, Charman Stone presiding. report of the executive committee was read and adored. Santa Cruz was selected as the place of holding the convention and August 25th was fixed as the date. Convention is for the purpose of electing presidee electors and the apportionment was the same as that May convention. This will make 734 delegates in Of the State Central Committee gaining control of the town. It was a contest for the Hearst-O'Brien faction of the town. From the moment the vote by B.D. "There is a good deal more right about the bite of a rattlesnake than there is actual danger." said a well known physician recently. "I do not mean to say that the bite of a rattler is not a very serious thing, but I do mean to say that this particular sort of snake is really not so ready or apt to 'get in his bite' as some others. "In the first place, there is now generally credited fact that the ratter is the most honest of snakes. He doesn't 'pick a fight.' He doesn't lay in wait for any one. He won't run away, of course, for he is a plucky reptile, but he will curl up and give you a fair warning from those rattles of this before he attempts to strike. I remember once in the west finding a ratter just ahead of my horse's fore feet. I had no weapon of any sort, so I rode on, passing within a few inches of the reptile. The snake was curled and ready for my horse in case the animal side stepped, but as we did nothing of that sort we were allowed to pass in peace. "Again, the truth is that the poison of the ratter does not get into the wound inflicted by the fangs in the average human being. For the average human being nowadays is clothed, and the holes in the fangs through which the poison comes are rather far up toward the roof of the mouth. Consequently very often the point of the fangs may enter the skin, while the poison dribbles out harmlessly enough upon the trousers or the boot. It is then that the 'victim' gets scared, fills up on whisky—a bad thing in bona fide cases of rattlesnake bite—and believes himself marvelously cured when he wakes up next day."—Philadelphia Press. CHINESE PROVERBS. A vain woman is to be feared, for she will sacrifice all for her pride. A woman without children has not yet the most precious of her jewels. A haughty woman stumbles, for she cannot see what may be in her way. A woman desirious of being seen by men is not trustworthy. Fear her glance. Respect always a silent woman. Great is the wisdom of the woman that holdeth her tongue. Trust not the woman that thinketh more of herself than another. Mercy will not dwell in her heart. Resolution of Intention, No. 39. sacrifice all for her pride. A woman without children has not yet the most precious of her jewels. A haughty woman stumbles, for she cannot see what may be in her way. A woman desirous of being seen by men is not trustworthy. Fear her glance. Respect always a silent woman. Great is the wisdom of the woman that holdeth her tongue. Trust not the woman that thinketh more of herself than another. Mercy will not dwell in her heart. A mother not spoken well of by her children is an enemy of the state. She should not live within the kingdom's wall. A woman that respects herself is more beautiful than a single star; more beautiful than many stars at night. The Tables Turned. A story is told of a high Indian officer who was in the habit of soundly thrashing his servants when they displeased him. One day he ordered his khansamah to go to a summer house in the compound and wait for him there, presently turning up with a heavy horsewhelm. He then addressed the offender: "Now, you scoundrel, I've got you in a place where no one can hear, and I'll just thrash you within an inch of your life!" The servant, though a man of powerful physique, squirmed, native-like. "Sah, you sure no one can hear?" "Yes, you scoundrel; I've brought you here on purpose!" "Then, sah, I think I thrash your!" And he did it so thoroughly that his master was not visible for a week. APHORISMS. Set a beggar on horseback and he will ride a gallop. Button. Humility is a virtue all preach, none practice, and yet everybody is content to hear. Selden. A life spent worthily should be measured by a nobler line-by deeds, not years. R.B.Sheridan. Health is the second blessing that we mortals are capable of, a blessing that money cannot buy. Walton. When a man assumes a public trust he should consider himself as public property. Thomas Jefferson. Everybody likes and respects self made men. It is a great deal better to be made in that way than not to be made at all. O.W.Holmes. The Advance of Dutchwomen. Most people think that the Dutch are a stationary if not a retrograde people, but in one respect at least they are ahead of most European nations. In the little monarchy, which has a queen for its head, women during the last ten years have made greater progress than perhaps any other nation in Europe. Next year, in token of this progress, Dutch women will hold a world's fair at The Hague, which is to be devoted solely to the exhibition of women's activities and industries. Side by side with this progress of women's work there has been an advance in the political field. This year, says The Humaniarian, the government has passed a law conferring almost an equal suffrage upon women and making them eligible to nearly all municipal offices. In Holland women have learned the advantage of co-operation and organization, and instead of being divided against themselves as in other countries they have worked together, with a result that they are winning all along the line. All Humors Are impure matters which the skin, liver, kidneys and other organs can not take care of without help, there is such an accumulation of them. They litter the whole system. Pimples, boils, eczema and other eruptions, loss of appetite, that tired feeling, billious turns, fits of indigestion, dull headaches and many other troubles are due to them. Hood's Sarsaparilla and Pills Remove all humors, overcome all their effects, strengthen, tone and invigorate the whole system. "I had salt rheum on my hands so that I could not work. I took Hood's Sarsaparilla and it drove out the humor. I continued its use till the sores disappeared." Mrs. Ira O. Brown, Rumford Falls, Me. Hood's Sarsaparilla promises to cure and keeps the promise. Beware of Ointments for Catarrh That Contains Mercury As mercury will surely destroy the sense of smell and completely derange the whole system when entering it through the mucous surfaces. Such articles should never be used except on prescriptions from reputable physicians, as the damage they will do is tenfold to the good you can possibly derive from them. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, O., contains no mercury, and is taken directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. In buying Hall's Catarrh Cure be sure you get the genuine. It is taken internally and made in Toledo, Ohio, by F. J. Cheney & Co. Testimonials free. Sold by druggists, Price 75c per bottle.
