At a meeting of citizens and taxpayers held at the Central grammar school on Monday evening a unanimous vote was taken instructing the school trustees to take immediate steps looking to the calling of an election for the purpose of voting bonds in the amount of $10,000 for building a four-room primary school building in this city. This is the same proposition voted upon by the district some weeks ago and defeated, because, as was stated at Monday evening's meeting, voters were not informed, or rather were misinformed, relative to the merits of the case. The facts of the situation, as they present themselves to our people, are these: The growth of the district during the past year has been such as to overcrowd the present school accommodations and hamper the force of teachers in their work. At the Central grammar school nine teachers are employed, where the number of pupils makes two additional teachers an absolute necessity. There are ten grades and only eight rooms. Two additional rooms, and perhaps three, will be needed next term. It is up to the people of the city to say whether these school children shall be furnished school accommodations, or whether they shall be denied these privileges. We never quite understood the mild form of insanity which o'erspread our voters at the recent bond election, when these self-same conditions prevailed, and when the voters resolved to go backward instead of forward. The election is called for Friday, July 8th.
No one denies that this growing army of school children should be properly housed and properly taught. The question is, How best to attain that end? A direct tax is out of the question, and renting outside rooms has not the sanction of those having experience in such matters. To levy a direct tax extending over a period of years, as was suggested at the last election, is not permissible under the school law; for, as was pointed out at the meeting, taxes so collected cannot be carried over unused from one year to another. If a direct tax be levied the second year,
The state board of trade has issued another of its pamphlets, this one under the title of "California to Land of Promise." As usual with all emanations from Gen. Chipman, statistician-in-chief to the state board of trade, the purpose of the pamphlet seems to be the relegation of the southern counties to a place secondary importance as compared with some of the counties in the north which one hardly ever hears about as offering inducements to the oncoming tide eastern home seekers. Thus we read that Humboldt Marin and Sonoma produce a million pounds of butter annually while Los Angeles is relegated to four place after them in the production of this commodity and Orange county figures in it not at all. Sacramento is shown to have made more cheese last year than Los Angeles, and San Mateo and other northern counties follow close after. Not another Southern California county is mentioned as producing anything at all this line. In the production of minerals the county of the north are away the best; we of the south are in it. Shipments of oranges from northern and central California aggregate 2200 cars, and, chirps of precious person, "ripen a month earlier than the one of Southern California." Nothing at all concern the 30,000 carloads of oranges grown in Southern California. "Orange tree planting in northern California is rapidly increasing," continues this amusing course. Here follow a few extracts from the booklet:
Practically all the fresh deciduous fruit is shipped from Northern and Central California.
The raisin center is in Fresno County and vicinity where the bulk of the raisins are grown.
The prune center is in Santa Clara county and cinty, and in that district probably seventy per cent of the prunes are grown.
Over eighty-five per cent. of the dried fruit, and equally large per cent of the canned fruit, goes for the northern and central portions of the State.
The walnuts are principally grown in the south while the almonds are mostly from the north.
The fresh peaches, pears, cherries, plums, apricots etc., nearly all go from the north of the Tehachi Range.
And so on to the end of the chapter. Of courses have no objection to Gen. Chipman's tooting the tueses of the north in trumpet blasts if it affords amusement, but to place his work before the people having been issued under the auspices of a state bill is an unwarrantable practice of deception that she directs to it the attention at least of Southern California. We have hitherto pointed out this distinguishing characteristic of Gen. Chipman's work. His ports are published broadcast in San Francisco other up-state papers, and thousands of the pamphlets...

If a direct tax be levied the second year, and moneys collected the first year remain in the school treasury, such moneys must be refunded to the taxpayers.
The sentiment of the school trustees, as well as a large outpouring of tax payers, is that bonds should be voted in the sum of $10,000 for the erection of a primary building. The purpose of the school trustees in not asking for a larger amount, as was suggested at the meeting, is that smaller pupils should be removed from the larger boys and girls, and that a four-room building will meet the requirements of the district for this purpose for the next three or four years.
We trust that a thorough understanding of the subject will be had by our citizens. Let the demand of our school children be met in fair and liberal spirit, let bonds be voted and a new school house erected. Anaheim cannot afford to stand still. The district is growing, and more school accommodations are imperatively demanded. Vote in favor of the bonds and build the school house.
Senator M. L. Ward of San Diego was in town on Saturday calling upon friends and acquaintances in the interest of his candidacy for the republican nomination for congress. Senator Ward finds the chief objection to his candidacy hereabout to be the action of his own county in failing to support the republican nominee for congress two years ago. To be sure no one places the blame upon him; on the contrary he exerted his talents to the utmost in support of the party candidate, and stumped the county for the ticket. Yet the impression will not down that the moment has not yet arrived for the nomination of a San Diego man for this important office. The last time a candidate for congress came from that county he was defeated in his own home. Following up this work of unpardonable party treachery the county again proved its political unworthy by knifing the ticket two years ago. Senator Ward is a gentleman of pleasing address and of no little ability as a speaker and party wheelhorse. He is engaged in citrus culture at Chlua Vista and ranks among the foremost lawyers of his county. The fight for the nomination seems to have settled down to a contest between him and Senator Smith of Kern, for whom there seems to be a very friendly feeling in Orange county. Congressman Daniels may be safely said to be out of the fight; his supporters seem to look for some authoritative statement from him to this effect in the near future. Upon the question of a nominee, while it may be said that Orange county stands for one of its own residents, yet
And so on to the end of the chapter. Of courses have no objection to Gen. Residents of the West End have petitioned their trustees for additional street lights in that part of city. They maintain the present service is insufficient to meet the requirements of that rapidly growing nation. The city fathers have the petition under consideration and will doubtless order an increased number of lights on West Center street and other thoroughfares in that neighborhood.
Reference was made during the school bond election some weeks ago to the fact that if the amount called had been $25,000 instead of $10,000, the vote had canceled time for a $25,000 building. What we need is a room primary building. The school trustees desire move the primary pupils away from the grammar school and to keep them permanently separated from the law scholars. This is what is proposed by the trustees erecting a four-room building for primary grades. Building will provide ample accommodations for next three or four years. Thereafter, if the community continues to grow at its present pace, a larger school building may become necessary, and at such time be in appropriate amount may be voted. But what district needs at present is a four-room building to commodate primary grades. It is up to you, Mr. Ward, to say whether you are a progressive citizen or a back silurian who ought to go back to the age of dinosaurus and such things. Vote the bonds and build the school house.
Twelve new buildings are in prospect for the future advancement of this city; work upon them all problems will be in progress in the near future. These include the new schoolhouse, for which bonds will in all likelihood be voted within a few weeks; Dr. Johnston’s story residence, for which bids will be opened this week; Peter Weisel’s residence, adjoining his father’s abode; residences for Dr. Hutchinson and his mother and one for Mr. Litten on Claudina street, because numerous others in immediate prospect. The purity of the Metz corner by the First National Bank result in a complete transformation of that business center. Fitted up with a new plate-glass front, a new brick block to be erected alongside of it, it proves a distinct advantage to the architectural beauty of the city. The town has struck its gait, as one erosionic citizen said yesterday, and nothing can stop electric railway talk fills the air, and with the aid of the trolley now making its way hither on the route this city will be in position to take its place aside the other rapidly growing communities of South California.
Upon the question of a nominee, while it may be said that Orange county stands for one of its own residents, yet no one has entered the arena, and certainly Mr. Chapman will not permit the use of his name so long as Captain Daniels remains even a negative factor in the contest. In this conjuncture of affairs, it is plain that the friendly feeling hereabout for Senator Smith may result in giving him the support of this county in the nominating convention.
The white poppy is now abloom in all its glory at several points near town. On the east side, near the Curtis grove, may be seen the largest as well as most beautiful patch of these flowers that can probably be found in the United States. Along the main ditch, east of town, may also be seen some very fine specimens. These flowers are extremely rare, being said to be indigenous only to a few points in Southern California and the region of the Himalaya mountains in Asia. A number of enthusiastic Los Angelenos have visited the local beds of these flowers and have taken shoots from them which are now growing in their gardens at home. The white poppy is probably the most beautiful of all our wild flowers, and it forms a conspicuous adornment to the garden.
Mr. Maxwell made a home thrust at the suggestion, current at the time of the last bond election, that money be raised by levying a direct tax for several years, at the meeting of tax payers on Monday evening. He pointed out that this practice was not permitted by school law. Money collected by direct tax, he said, cannot be carried over into the following year if another direct tax be levied on that year. If a tax be levied in such succeeding year, the unused money remaining over from the first year's levy must be returned to the tax payer. Vote bonds and build the school house.
One hundred and twenty-five school children moved into the Anaheim school district the past Shall we provide school facilities for them, or deny them, and say to others intending to come here, away; we have no school accommodations for you, are besides afflicted with a mild form of temporary sanity which is catching? Shall we say to them that we make the reply expected of progressive enterprising communities? It is up to the voters to Vote the bonds and build the schoolhouse.
Funds may be raised for building school houses direct taxation, but in that event the money would not be available until June of next year. The first installment, as was explained by Prof. Nichols, county superintendent of public instruction at Monday evening meeting, would be available in December; the second June. So that puts direct taxation, even if taxpayer garded it favorably otherwise, entirely out of the question. Vote for bonds and build the school house.
All doubt about the candidacy of United States Senator Fairbanks of Indiana for the Republican nomination for vice-president at the Chicago convention been removed by the announcement that former United States Senator Wolcott of Colorado has been invited to make the speech in the Chicago convention place Senator Fairbanks in nomination. Wolcott has received this invitation from men who were authorized by Senator Fairbanks to extend it. Wolcott has been selected to nominate Senator Fairbanks for two reasons. One that he is an orator of great power, and the other is comes from a state that will be called early in the states, so that Senator Fairbanks will undoubtedly be placed in nomination before any other candidate vice-president.
Greatest Show on Earth
McEachran's minstrels packed the opera-house on Saturday evening with the biggest audience that has assembled there in years. Mike Melrose and Joe Burke, the two end men specially imported from the oil wells for the occasion, and Billy McEachran, the musical genius all the way over from Fullerton, convulsed the audience with their antics, Mike's song, "I Got Mine," showing he received all that was by rights coming to him. Joe sang, "Tain't No Disgrace to Run," bringing down the house. McEachran's musical tourist was loudly applauded. Songs by Billy Robertson, as well as the chorus, were well received. The entertainment was enjoyable throughout, and the boys deserve credit for the excellence of the show.
Will Dry Apricots
Local growers of apricots have entered into contract with the North Ontario drying works for drying their fruit at this point. With this end in view the drying establishment will be overhauled and the capacity enlarged. Apricots will be plentiful in Orange county, while from the northern and central portions of the state reports come to the effect that not to exceed half a crop will be gathered.
It is expected prices will in consequence range higher than last year, when $20 per ton was offered for graded fruit. This figure netted growers about $17 for the run of orchard. No prices have yet been fixed for the crop, but growers will probably hold for better figures than offered last year. The crop is of excellent quality hereabout, and with continued favorable weather the best crop in years ought to be harvested.

THE POINT OF THE JOKE.
It Was Difficult For the Englishman, but He Finally Saw It.
A party of Englishmen were in Chicago sightseeing some time ago. They were entertained at dinner by some Chicago Englishmen who have lived in America long enough to have a keen appreciation of the American idea of a joke. During the evening all the members of the party told stories or sung songs and entertained according to their several abilities.
One of the English visitors could see nothing funny in the stories told by the Chicago Englishmen. Every time one of them would tell a good American story at which most of the party would laugh uproariously this particular Englishman would adjust his monocle to his eye and, looking wonderingly around the table, would remark, "But I say, I don't see anything in that to laugh at, y'know."
One of the Chicago men finally recited an original poem. The poem told of an Englishman who had come to America and after being in this country only a short time had died and gone to another and much warmer country. Ten years passed, and one day an imp passing that way heard the Englishman laughing uproariously.
"Why, what are you laughing at?" Inquired the imp.
"Oh, oh, oh, such a funny story as I heard in America! Oh, it was so funny!" laughed the victim, and he held hands to his side and almost doubled up with merriment.
"A story you heard! Why, you've heard no story," said the imp. "You've been dead ten years."
"Yes, yes, I know, I know," cried the man. "But I've just seen the joke."
This poem set the table in a roar. Amid all the laughing and shouting the obtuse visitor adjusted his monocle and drawled out, "But, I say, I don't see anything funny in that, y'know."
"No," replied the man who had read the poem as quick as a flash. "Of course you don't. You haven't been dead ten years." And even the obtuse Englishman saw the point—Chicago Tribune.

BRITISH IN AMERICA.
It Is Estimated That They Own Twenty Million Acres Here.
How much property do British subjects own in America? The aggregate, based on absolute facts, is known to be at least 20,000,000 acres, asserts Tit-Bits.
The largest of all is probably the Texas possession of the syndicate which includes in its membership the Duke of Beaufort and Rutland, Earl Cadogan and the Baroness Burdett-Counts.
The total amount of land held by this association is 3,800,000 acres. It is, as is the case with most of the Texas land, largely composed of what is called range country—that is, land that is better adapted for cattle raising than anything else.
Cattle and wheat are what the British investor seems to think money should be made on in the United States. That is why the syndicate represented by the British capitalist Vincent Scully owns 3,000,000 acres of land in Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois. This property is situated in the heart of the wheat growing section.
Two American girls, who now wear, by virtue of their marriage with English peers, two of the highest British titles—the Duchess of Marlborough and Lady Randolph Chirchill—are interested with Sir Edward Reed in a syndicate that owns 2,000,000 acres situated in Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico. This is purely a cattle country, and on it range thousands of head of live stock.
There is another syndicate which includes among its members the Earl of Dalhousie, as well as Viscountess Cross, Lady Hamilton Gordon, the Marquis Cholmondley and several others.
There is a holding in a still different part of the country, for the lands of the syndicate comprise 1,800,000 acres in Mississippi, including cotton plantations, acres and acres of sugar cane and enough swine to stock 1,000 farms.
Lord Tweeddale is a syndicate in himself and owns 1,800,000 acres Like most individual land owners with large holdings, his property includes a vast territory which, like that of the syndicate spoken of, includes immense tracts of grazing lands. Nearly all of this immense possession is devoted to stock.—St. Louis Republic.
He Was Alone.
One night after the curtain was rung up at a certain English theater where the "Standing Room Only" was not needed a small boy was discovered sobbing in front of the box office. The manager of the theater went to the lad and kindly asked him what the trouble was. "I want my money back!" sobbed the boy. In surprise the manager asked his reason for such a request. "Because I'm afraid to sit up in the gallery all alone!" he wailed. His money was returned.—Argonaut.
