The Weekly Gazette ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. HENRY KUCHEL, Editor and Proprietor THURSDAY ... May 26, 1904 Eighteen blindpigs at Santa Ana, and four drugstores where liquors are sold. That is a fine record for one year of prohibition. We do not vouch for the truth of these figures, but we have the word of a well-known business man of the county seat therefor. At one of these speakeasies men enter a room apparently untenanted. A half dollar is laid upon a shelf in the corner, the men step into another room, and when they return, prestol there set two beautiful bottles of beer, taking the place of the silver piece, which mysteriously disappears. This game is called "Whispering to the Speakeasy;" another game said to be practiced at the county seat is called "Putting specks on the blind pig." A drugstore in that darkest town is said recently to have purchased seven barrels of whiskey, and bottled beer is said to be shipped into the town by the carload. Prohibition has not stopped consumption of liquor at Santa Ana; on the contrary it is held by many that it has absolutely increased the liquor habit. Where formerly men entered a saloon and purchased a drink, now they buy a bottle, and generally consume it. We are not citing these facts as an advocate of saloons, but we should like to know what Dr. Chapman, the advance agent of the blindpig, thinks of prohibition at Santa Ana, with these eighteen speakeasies running overtime, and with drugstores lading out whiskey much as the despised saloon used to do. Does he consider it best to continue this or would it best conserve public morals to place the traffic under high license, safeguarded by proper municipal regulations, and thus place upon it its share of the burdens of government? What say you, Doctor? Blind pigs or paved streets? Consumers of fish now have an opportunity for indulging in dietetic delights in the fact that a new fish market has been opened in town, as well as that a Newport fisherman makes semi-weekly trips through an exhibition of what seems to be very much worse work on the part of Col. Schreiber of the amining board of the First brigade has come to life this week and is engaging the attention of guardsmiths the county over. It is in reference to the refusal the board to issue a commission to Clyde Bishop Santa Ana, recently elected captain of Company Bishop was elected to the office unanimously, we lieve, and passed the ensuing examination before regimental superiors in satisfactory fashion Howe when it came to the issuance of his commission the brigade examining board that august body fused so to do, and the newly elected captain had go home without it. The ostensible reason for our unheard of action is that Bishop, while a sergeant of the regimental encampment at Long Beach two years ago in a spirit of fun took the Santa Ana company one night toward the end of the meeting, and captured the entire regiment, Col. Schreiber among them. For this act of insubordination he was reduced to ranks and other punishment meted out to him when we do not now recall. It would seem that to Schreiber's way of thinking Bishop has not outlived the famy of this act, but the real reason for the examining board's strange act is understood to be due spite on Schreiber's part towards Bishop's stand in sisting Major Finley to election as Colonel of the regiment, which command Schreiber was valorous seeking. Bishop will probably be re-elected captain and Schreiber will have another guess at it, and governor may be asked to take a hand in the military. Senator Caldwell still has eleven votes to go on the district convention soon to be called; and it pears a coterie of his friends at Santa Ana are yet ambush endeavoring to secure a vote or two from ange county to throw to the Riversider and each rethis county of the honor of naming his success. But the Republican party of Orange county will hold a convention and it will be up to them to whether Orange county shall name the senator whether one or two men at Santa Ana, having in serve a candidate for a place upon the state ti two years hence, and hoping to advantage themselves by sacrificing the interests of the county in this fi may be able by specious arts and pretexts to lead party from the straightforward pathway of its litical duty. These vendors are supplied by fishermen at Newport, Huntington Beach, Anaheim Landing and other points along the Southern Coast, occasional shipments being made from San Diego. These near-by fish are taken on one day and may be had fresh upon the breakfast table the following morning. Fishing is regulated according to the run of the finny tribes, which sometimes swarm at one point and then disappear, only to show up at another point. This fish is cleaned as soon as taken, salted and purveyed at the earliest moment. It is fresh and wholesome, and an occasional meal of it prolongs the life as well as adds to the enjoyment of the hungry mortal. In contrast to all this is the cold-storage fish also being offered for sale throughout the valley. This fish comes from points a thousand miles away, is treated with chemicals deleterious to health, is frequently tainted and is altogether unfit for use. This fish, eaten by adults, is frequently followed by nausea, developing into the rejection by the stomach of the entire meal, as well as several of those preceding. In the case of infants and children, its use is at times followed by fatality. Its sale should not be permitted; but its disposal can be stopped if people will cease buying it. San Bernardino is said to have a candidate for Congress in the person of Capt. Paul of North Ontario, who seems to hear the bee buzzing in his bonnet. It is doubtful if the busy little bee will make much San Bernardino honey this year, owing to lack of rainfall. Meanwhile San Bernardino's move will operate to solidify Riverside in support of Smith of Kern. Announcement comes from Riverside that Daniels is out of the race, with the delegates leaning strongly to the Kern man. Granted that Orange county will be found to lean much the same way, it looks to us like nothing but the Kern wagon coming down the pike. There is no uncertain note in what the Republican platform adopted at Sacramento says about President Roosevelt. We quote as follows: "In Theodore Roosevelt we recognize a fearless champion of human rights, an intelligent statesman, a friend of labor, a safe and wise Chief Magistrate, a President under whose control the affairs of the nation have been successfully managed, and to whose care we can and do with all confidence commend the administration of the government for the next four years. We, therefore, instruct the delegates this day chosen to cast their votes for Theodore Roosevelt of New York as the nominee of the Republican party of the United States and to use all honorable endeavor to secure his nomination;" and those instructions But the Republican party of Orange county will hold a convention and it will be up to them to whether Orange county shall name the senator whether one or two men at Santa Ana, having in serve a candidate for a place upon the state title two years hence, and hoping to advantage themselves by sacrificing the interests of the county in this fife may be able by specious arts and pretexts to lead party from the straightforward pathway of its litalic duty. Shall we permit Riverside to come the senatorial convention solidified by the unit rule Caldwell, and suffer our delegates to attend disruptions and disunited, the majority of them for an Orange county candidate, and one or two of them in the pocket of Jeems McFadden, whose cherished purpose is to toss them like a low ball in the direction of Riverside batsman? The party is not yet in dotage, and we lean to the opinion that Jeems has his menagerie will have to come off the perch. The Santa Ana Dispatch is no more, having executed a flank movement up the golden stairs, sidestepping fully two steps at a time. A fortnight since its sale being negotiated to a newspaper man from Oregon unlike the majority of his fellow-craft, was said to possessed of large gobs of wealth—whether with the tention of separating himself from it in the Santa Ana newspaper field is not stated. But the sale fell through the man with the money sidestepped, and before E.Cottle could administer the knockout drops he met his escape, and it was up to the paper for a sasha-the golden flight. We shall miss the visits of sprightly young contemporary—it was not half back Santa Ana newspapers go, and it is not too much to that few eyes will be undimmed at the passing of our young and yet so fair. Santa Ana has set up a crow over the appearance of the first automobile carrying mail on its rural delivery. That's nothing, Merton Skinner has delivered mail on Route 3 of Anaheim's rural freeway in an automobile since last year. His nieces embraces Olive, Peralta, and neighboring farms; he is said to be the pioneer automobile mail carrier the state. Merton will go up head. Fullerton and Santa Ana are talking of celebrating the Fourth. Anaheim had its celebration year ago, and is content to let its neighbors go aloud and turn themselves loose this year. But two abrations in the county will never do. Let the boy get together and decide upon one place for the bout. Then Anaheim will be there with its bunc firecrackers. Let's see; it's about Fullerton's turn have the celebration, isn't it? The Department of Agriculture has issued a report on "The Nation's Farm Surplus," prepared by Geoffrey K. Holmes, chief of the Division of Foreign Markets gives $4,500,000,000 as a conservative estimate of farm products of this country not fed to live stock 1903, on the basis of the census valuation. The value of exported farm products of this country was in $878,469,451, and the highest value reached during last century were $951,628,391 in 1901 due to lower prices. We, therefore, instruct the delegates this day chosen to cast their votes for Theodore Roosevelt of New York as the nominee of the Republican party of the United States and to use all honorable endeavor to secure his nomination;" and those instructions will be enthusiastically carried out at Chicago. The San Bernardino Valley Water Protective association has commenced action against the Riverside Trust company and the Gage Canal company for permanent injunction restraining them from continuing to drain the lands of the plaintiff, of the percolating waters, by means of an elaborate system of deep wells and electrical dumping plants. Plaintiffs own land in San Bernardino valley, which is described in the complaint as an incline plain of comparatively even surface, for the most part, having a grade of slope in a southerly direction. The boundaries of the valley are described, so far as they relate to the artesian basin, and the statement is made that within the past thirty years more than 1500 wells have been bored within this basin, many to a depth of 700 feet. It is pointed out that the waters contained within the artesian strata in a state of nature naturally percolate within plaintiffs' land to within five to fifteen feet of the surface, thus moistening the land and nourishing the trees, vines, grasses, alfalfa and other crops. Since the operation of the defendants' wells and pumping plants, the water in the wells, maintained for over twenty years by the plaintiffs, has lowered, many have gone completely dry, and all are suffering from the effect the defendants' wells and plants have caused. The complaint makes the statement that the defendant corporations, by means of their pumping plants are taking more than 1500 inches of constant flow from the lands of the plaintiffs and the artesian basin and conveying this immense volume of water to a great distance for irrigation purposes. A long list of wells and plants owned and operated by the defendants is given. The Department of Agriculture has issued a report on "The Nation's Farm Surplus," prepared by George K. The value of exported farm products of this country was in $878,469,451, and the highest value reached during last eleven years was $951,628,331 in 1901, due chiefly cotton. Taking up the destinations of the surplus, the report says the United Kingdom takes about one-billion Germany about one-sixth and France, The Netherlands Belgium, Canada and Italy from 3 to 5 per cent. ee China in recent years takes a million dollars' worth annually, and they go to Russia, China, Korea, Greenland Iceland and other remote portions of the earth. From 85 to 90 per cent. of the total goes to Europe, 6 to 7 per cent. to North America and less than 2 per cent each Asia, South America and Oceanica. The report also takes up the competition of this country in foreign markets, showing that this country furnishes 32 percent of the United Kingdom's imports of farm products thus leading in these imports. The United States has long lead over its competitors as a purveyor of meat and meat products and live animals, and is likewise pre-emently conspicuous in the United Kingdom's imports cereals and cotton, but is far behind its competitors in dairy products. China has been informed that the Washington government claims the right to dispatch warships not only to those Chinese ports declared by treaty to be open to the world, but also upon the inland waters of China wherever Americans may be, and where treaty will China, they are authorized to engage in business or side for purpose of spreading the gospel. That the official details on this subject may be known the state department has decided to publish the correspondence between Mr. Conger and Rear Admiral Robley Evans commander-in-chief of the Asiatic squadron, which followed a protest of the Chinese government against the visit of the gunboat Villalobos last summer in the Yangtse valley, whither she was ordered by the commander-in-chief of the Asiatic fleet to gather such information about the Americans residing there as would be of assistance in rendering them prompt assistance in case an expected native outbreak against foreigners. It seems to be very much like the first brigade has come to light regarding the attention of guardsmen in reference to the refusal by commission to Clyde Bishop of elected captain of Company L. The office unanimously, we being examination before his satisfactory fashion However, the assurance of his commission by the board that august body newly elected captain had to give ostensible reason for this at Bishop, while a sergeant at present at Long Beach two years back the Santa Ana company, led of the meeting, and captured Schreiber among the lot. Insects are oddly constructed atoms of animated nature, as a rule, and it depends altogether on the species as to internal makeup. In bees the crop is called the honey bag." Insects with mandibles usually have a modified form of the "gizzard" so typical in the common barnyard fowl. In some cases this miniature "gizzard" is a perfect wonder shop, its inner surface being provided with "pads" covered with "horns" and "bristles" in great profusion. The grasshopper's "gizzard" is lined with innumerable rows of teeth, very minute, of course, but well developed, true teeth, nevertheless. The same may be said of crickets and other insects of that ilk. Deer and Sleep. Deer reverse the apparent order of nature, for they sleep in the daytime and feed at night. How much sleep they do take is a matter of contention even among experienced stalkers. Some say little, others much. On the whole, we are inclined to agree with the former, for it has to be remembered that they chew the cud when lying down. Two most experienced and observant foresters, one in Argyllshire and the other in Aberdeenshire, thus gave their opinions: "Deer sleep or rest from about 10 or 11 a.m. to 4 p.m." "Deer sleep from noon to 5 p.m." It is no uncommon occurrence to some on deer asleep. A stalker in the Blackmount had the rare experience of coming upon a parcel of seven stags, all sound asleep. A herd was seen to move in Glentesble, but one stag remained behind, lying motionless. On a careful approach he was found to be asleep. Perhaps, however, the oddest occurrence of this nature happened in Braemore, when a stalking party on going up to the stag which had just been shot found a three-year-old close to it fast asleep. In fact, it is by no means rare to get within a yard or two of a sleeping deer.—Scottish Field. All Humors Are impure matters which the skin, liver, kidneys and other organs can not take care of without help, there is such an accumulation of them. They litter the whole system.
