The Weekly Gazette ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. HENRY KUCHEL, Editor and Proprietor THURSDAY April 21, 1904 DANIELS IS IN THE RACE. Congressman Daniels has announced his candidacy for renomination as Congressman in the following letter to C. C. Chapman of this county: WASHINGTON, April 12, 1904. Hon. C. C. Chapman, Chairman Eighth District Congressional Committee: DEAR SIR—In reply to your letter in regard to my candidacy for the renomination for Congress from the Eighth Congressional District, I beg to state that recently I have received letters from different parts of the district inquiring my future action in this matter, and assuring me of earnest and hearty support. I wish to state to you, as chairman of the committee, that I am a candidate for renomination, and you are authorized to so state to the different organizations in the district. Such a statement on my part I consider hardly necessary, because of the fact that a renomination, as a rule, is always conceded to an incumbent who has been faithful to his trust and his party. During my term of office I have endeavored to carry out the trust imposed in me to the best of my ability, and to improve every opportunity which has offered to advance the interests of my constituents. My loyalty to my party and country has never been questioned, and I see no reason why I should not ask at the hands of the people a renomination. It is generally conceded and understood that a Congressman's first term is an introduction to his associates, the rules of the House, the heads of the departments, and the committee work, whereby he becomes fully qualified and equipped to do valued service for his party and his constituents during his second term. My work has placed me in perfect touch with the party and the administration, and I feel perfectly justified in asking at the hands of the party a renomination, believing that my work has been such as to entitle me to that honor. I most respectfully ask that such recognition be conceded me at the nominating convention. It is possible that during the Fifty-ninth Congress an effort will be made to revise the present Dingley tariff. Lines in Oregon. One day he would be in his attending to routine work; the next day he would probably be seen on the streets of Salem, Albany, Eugene in conversation with the business men; ing out what he could do for them and what could do to increase the tonnage of the road; the day he would be talking to an assemblage of factions at some small station along the line, pointing at them the financial advantages to be derived from establishment of a creamery in their midst. Other occasion he would be delivering an address to the students of the University of Oregon. A touch with the people—ever sinking his high position to within the reach of the humblest of the road. His has been an earnest and a sous life, and it is safe to say, that now that he is in a few rounds of the top of the ladder, he has but one thought, and that is for the good of its poration which he has served so well and so But a retrospective glance is all that is necessary one to know that Mr. Markham is destined to be the President of the Southern Pacific Company, ting final tribute to duty well performed. THERE'LL be a pruning of old timber at the house after a bit, so the dickey birds say. AND NATE ULM, he climbed into the band Boss Williams has taken his place upon the deck, so to speak, and so far the craft seems quite well. COL. LANGLEY went down with the Crawford ship, his colors flying to the last. Let us bid farewell to Messrs. Langley and Crawford, twin political evils. RISING in his seat and pointing his finger men at the party, the editor of the Santa Ana Blade "Program!" and declares that if any more is heard by the republicans there will be a revolution about it, Mr. Bradford? Was there a jar at the court house? The come a time when a cleaning-out process will nessed such as the old building has never seen Life tenure of office may go in some counties; it must get on the toboggan, along with Dr. C Capt. Crawford and Col. Langley. It is generally conceded and understood that gressman's first term is an introduction to his associates, the rules of the House, the heads of the departments, and the committee work, whereby he becomes fully qualified and equipped to do valued service for his party and his constituents during his second term. My work has placed me in perfect touch with the party and the administration, and I feel perfectly justified in asking at the hands of the party a renomination, believing that my work has been such as to entitle me to that honor. I most respectfully ask that such recognition be conceded me at the nominating convention. It is possible that during the Fifty-ninth Congress an effort will be made to revise the present Dingley tariff law that has proven so beneficial to our citrus industry. It was my privilege to be here during the formation of that law in 1897, in the interest of the fruit growers of California, and to assist in some degree in framing the parts of that law relating to the protection of our industries, and remembering that memorable contest and its results I believe that I could be of some service in the revision of that law, on account of my past practical experience on that subject. I have the honor to be, yours very respectfully. M. J. Daniels. THE SIZE OF MANCHURIA. Manchuria corresponds in latitude to Manitoba, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska. Its area of 362,310 square miles is only 10,000 square miles less than the combined area of these great grain States. It is two and one-half times greater than California, and is as big as Texas, Alabama and Louisiana combined. In the northern part of the provinces are thousands of square miles of rich wheat land entirely untouched. Manchuria has a possible wheat area as great as that of the United States.—National Magazine. RAINFALL. Rainfall to the extent of .56 of an inch on Monday night, beginning at 8:30, and continuing at intervals during the night. This brings the totals for the season, according to Mr. Dickel's gauge, to 7.13 inches; last year to date, 17 inches. Showers on Tuesday amounted to .12, making total for the storm .68 of an inch. CAP'N DANIELS has written from Washington, as we see by the papers, asking for a "vindication," which means renomination. The Captain's vindication rests with his neighbors at Riverside, where the ins and outs of his broken bank are known and understood. The closed bank has no political interest to the other counties in the district—only this, that its president seems to be mighty poor political timber to put up for congress. Even with the Orange Growers' Bank doing business at the old stand, and Tom Hays out of jail—even if the recent stormy events at Riverside had never happened—it is doubtful if Daniels had been renominated. At best, his long fight of two years ago would probably have been repeated. But with his bank running up its curtains, while a throng of moneyless depositors fill the street in front of the institution; with Hays in jail, and his political household topsy-turvy, Daniels is not the man to seek renomination. No one has charged him with having guilty knowledge of Hays' crimes, but just the same Daniels is not the man at this conjuncture of affairs IF A vote had been taken in Saturday's county would Senator Caldwell have received many dorsing him for renomination? Not one. That is alive to the fact that it is Orange county's name this important official this year, and we mistake the signs of the times, intends reluctately to stand for and insist upon its right names of several able Orange county men mentioned in connection with this office, and the proper time arrives delegates will be eloquent instructed to support the one most qualified office, whoever he may be. This the republicans are agreed to, as we said, some wiley They recognize the fact that it is our turbulent wheel, and recognize, too, that we have good people of the county. A convention of more and thoroughly competent men never assures the county, and right well did they do The new central committee is a good one, Bank doing business at the old stand, and Tom Hays out of jail—even if the recent stormy events at River-side had never happened—it is doubtful if Daniels had been renominated. At best, his long fight of two years ago would probably have been repeated. But with his bank running up its curtains, while a throng of moneyless depositors fill the street in front of the institution; with Hays in jail, and his political household topsy-turvy, Daniels is not the man to seek renomination. No one has charged him with having guilty knowledge of Hays' crimes, but just the same Daniels is not the man at this conjuncture of affairs to place in nomination for this important office. One ground for opposition to selecting a new county central committee at Saturday's convention was the idea entertained by some of the delegates that Dr. Cushman, the retiring chairman, had the cards stacked so as to insure his reelection. But the fear was groundless. Cushman was long ago slated for the toboggan, and is succeeded by a man in every way his superior, so far as fitness for the office is concerned. Cushman's star as a political factor is set in this county, and it will likely stay set for some time to come. Mr. C. H. Markham has been promoted from Vice-President of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad to General Manager of the entire Southern Pacific system. To the uninitiated the significance of this news item has little of concern. But to those who have watched with interest and surprise the phenomenal and unprecedented rise of Mr. Markham from the modest position of station agent at Fresno a few short years ago to the most responsible and exacting position in the gift of this gigantic corporation, it is pleasant and gratifying, and is a practical illustration of the old axiom, that "merit has its reward." By the concentration of energy, unity of purpose and the growing up with the company and circumstances—factors which eventually make all small things great—Mr Markham has reared for himself a magnificent superstructure on a poverty-stricken basis. He is a practical man, a business man, democratic in all of his ways, and with a manner all his own of getting in touch with the men who rule the destinies of the country. Less than four years ago he was General Freight and Passenger Agent of the Southern Pacific's The general conference of the Methodist Church will convene for its quadrennial session Los Angeles on May 4, and will doubtless be in session until the latter part of the month. This also be a great missionary exhibit occupying large hall formerly used by the chamber of commerce at Fourth and Broadway. There will be guest sionary rallies in the pavilion from 2 to each afternoon. Some of the subjects that will fore the general conference are the restoration time limit for the ministry, the amusement of the consolidation of benevolences and the distribution of the various church boards.
