THURSDAY... April 7, 1904
Senator Smith of Bakersfield was a visitor in Orange county this week, informing himself as to local sentiment regarding his candidacy for representative in congress from the Eighth district. Senator Smith is no stranger here, having been in frequent attendance at conventions in this and contiguous counties for a number of years past, and so far as we can learn there is a decided preferment for him here, always in the event that Orange county shall have no candidate for the office. The only objection made to Senator Smith, that he comes from a democratic county, situate in the northern part of the district, and that the congressman should come from one of the counties returning a republican majority, is specious and untenable; for, if elected he will fittingly represent every county in his district. Again, look at the map and you will see that Kern county is not so far away, and its dwindling democratic vote gives promise of its early becoming a staunch republican county.
As to Congressman Daniels it is doubtful if his name will be presented to the convention. At best he is not strong political timber, and the recent disclosure at Riverside concerning the business and political methods of Tom Hays, has practically put Daniels out of the race. Of course the latter is not to be held responsible for the acts of his political manager, but, even so, to nominate a man for congress who was president of a mismanaged banking institution which was forced to close its doors, is probably more than the congressional convention will stand for. Daniels experienced too hard a struggle to land the nomination in the last campaign to look with confidence upon his ability to land a renomination with his manager in jail and a collapsed bank on his hands. So the Captain might just as well be considered out of the running; and so might all other would-be aspirants in that storm-ridden county in this year of grace.
San Diego has a candidate in the person of Senator Ward, but the fact that that county failed to return a majority for the republican nominee at the sample ballots have been mailed to voters, fearful and wonderful mess of it is the result. candidates for city offices now before the people "independent" candidates; that is to say, nonregular nominees of political conventions, each by candidates by petition. Nevertheless the ballot box this inscription, "To vote a straight ticket, start cross within this circle." This circle is provided the first column of nominees, yet it is to be done if it has any legal right there to be. Thus, a st placed in this circle polls a vote for every candidate in that column, unless a cross be affixed in the so after the name of a candidate in another column. This circle gives candidates in the first column unfair advantage over those in other columns, and would be interesting to know how the alignment about. The name of Fritz Martin, independent didate for city marshal, appears in the second column with heavy rules above and below it. These apply to be the only such used in the ticket, and it will be interesting to know just why this was done. names of Bissell and Darling, candidates for trustees, are placed in the "straight" column, those of Miller and Tyler are in the "split" column Inasmuch as Bissell and Miller stand for a Sunday, while Darling and Tyler are supported those opposed to Sunday closing, it is difficult understand why candidates' names were placed in the ballots in the manner indicated. Support elector stamps a cross in the circle for a street ticket, and then stamps a cross opyosite Miller's in the second column: Does this vote for Miller cel the elector's vote for Bissell? If not, why Again, suppose an elector stamps a cross in the and then places a cross opposite the name of Tyler in the second column. Does the vote for cancel the vote for Darling? If not, why not? criticism has been indulged in by voters over sample ballots, and an effort is making to have official ballots to be used at Monday's election correctly, without the circle over one group of nor and with the names of Bissell and Miller in another.
On Saturday next, April 9th, voters of this district will have an opportunity of voting up issue of $10,000 in bonds for the erection of school building. That more school room is by our growing population is not disputed, and to the citizens to provide the room. At present day sessions are given the first and second
ident of a mismanaged banking institution which was forced to close its doors, is probably more than the congressional convention will stand for.
San Diego has a candidate in the person of Senator Ward, but the fact that that county failed to return a majority for the republican nominee at the last election, when in 1900, it gave Needham 1600 majority, will not redound to the advantage of that county in the convention. San Diego had a chance to nominate Senator Nutt two years ago, but on account of dissensions within the party he failed to land the nomination, although he came within a few votes of doing so. When Needham defeated Daniels at Newport Beach eight years ago, the Riversiders went home and rolled up a majority of 1200 for the Stanislaus man. After the defeat of Nutt, the San Diegans went home and openly supported the democratic nominee. In that strong republican county Smythe actually polled a majority of 100 votes. Go back into the political history of the county a little further, and you will see that San Diego defeated Bowers ten years ago; thus repudiating its own candidate. The county maintains that its importance politically as well as geographically entitles it to the congressman; but it might have had that honor uninterruptedly all these years had it not slaughtered its own candidate in support of the rankest popocrat and calamity howler who ever cavorted about this district. It is doubtful if San Diego will have much following in the convention this year. So it will be seen that in the event Orange county will have no candidate for the honor, Senator Smith’s candidacy will appeal to our voters with considerable force. The contention that Kern may be set out the district at the next apportionment is not weighty, for even if new lines are made necessary by the increase in population—and of this there exists little doubt—the counties of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura will probably be the first to be cut out. Thus on this score there can be no weighty objection to Kern’s candidate. It is yet early in the campaign, and Orange county may have a candidate; but if she should not Smith will have an excellent opportunity of securing the county’s endorsement. That he will prove worthy of it we thoroughly believe.
J. R. Newberry was in town on Thursday in conference with the litigation committees of the two valley water companies, but there is no ground for the statement that the conference resulted in a determination on the part of the latter to purchase his extensive land holdings up the river. The meeting was in executive session, and little is known of the result of its deliberations, but it is positively asserted that no purchase of the lands in question was for a moment discussed. The meeting was called at Newberry’s suggestion and was for the purpose of arriving, if possible, by peaceable means at what he had been unable
ON SATURDAY next, April 9th, voters of this district will have an opportunity of voting up issue of $10,000 in bonds for the erection of a school building. That more school room is by our growing population is not disputed, and to the citizens to provide the room. At present day sessions are given the first and second half the pupils attending school in the morning the others in the afternoon. While the room grades are at present crowded, next year two additional rooms will be an absolute necessity. How shall be provided for? A direct tax of $10,000 is not countenanced, and it would impose greivous burdens taxation upon those least able to bear it. The alternative is that, if we are to provide school room, the people should accept the advice of the board and vote in favor of bonds. Some object arisen to the amount as being excessive for a four-building. Yet it must be remembered that must be purchased for a site, and the building furter after erection. Two thousand per room is a fine mate for any school building. This will consume and leave $2000 for the purchase of a suitable seat for furnishing the building. We are content to the advice of the school board, whose statement public, printed in these columns last Thursday waving that more school room is an absolute need. Do our taxpayers desire to provide this school room they do, they will vote in favor of bonds.
AN APPROPRIATION OF $1300 has been made by pervisors to defray the expenses of printing 400 page pamphlets and 300,000 four-page folders of Orange county to be distributed at the exposition. The pamphlet will be profusely illuminated and each section of the county will be adequately sented. Six pages have been devoted to the registration Anaheim, Fullerton, Placentia, Buenos Aires and contiguous territory. Dr. Johnston and Cox sell will prepare copy for this city and vicinity, a work of preparing the entire pamphlet has been painstaking and efficient hands. Copy for this will be prepared within a few weeks, when printing will be asked for. This promises to most ambitious bit of advertising ever done by county, and cannot but promise much resultant in directing attention of homeseekers to the great advantages of this valley.
ANAHEIM has been selected as the place meeting of the democratic county convention will assemble at the opera house on Saturday 30. Primaries will be held on April 23. County central committee decided at a meet Santa Ana on Saturday. The convention will lowed by a banquet at 7:30 p.m. Chairman son, Secretary Baker and J. J. Schneider were pointed a committee on arrangements. Deputy Attorney Homer Ames, M. Nisson and Schneider were made a committee to formulate for the primary election and the county convenance. A resolution was adopted declaring for Hearst presidency of this valley.
J. The meeting was called at Newberry's suggestion and was for the purpose of arriving, if possible, by peaceable means at what he had been unable to accomplish through the courts. In a word Newberry made the water companies an offer to develop water on his Rincon ranch, and using the whole or greater part of the river's flow, for power creating purposes, he to turn the water back into the river after its use by him, and he to turn over to the irrigators a portion of the proceeds of his power scheme. The meeting drew out the fact that the proposition seemed to give Newberry all the turkey and the irrigators the feathers. Newberry may be a fox in sheep's clothing but it is to be doubted if he can put salt on the beautiful tails of the litigation committee.
Rev. Markle of the Christian church informs us that there is not a particle of truth in the story prevalent in town some days ago to the effect that members of his church had been poisoned by partaking of communion wine at the church Sunday morning a week ago. Its insertion in various newspapers is to be regretted, and its publication illustrates again that false reports will get into print, try as hard as one may to keep them out. We did not believe the story ourselves when we saw it, and have been wondering ever since how the dickens it ever got into print. There’s many an editor who stands in need of Rev. Markle’s prayers to the end that he may publish a better and more truthful paper, and one not so entirely given over to sensationalism as some we wot of.
Loara school district was formed on Tuesday by order of the supervisors, embracing the district at West Anaheim. Katella district remains a part of the Anaheim school district. L. A. Evans, J. W. Duckworth and H. M. Wessler were appointed trustees of the new district.
Next year this school district will be entitled to additional teachers. If school room is not provided they shall witness the spectacle of one teacher ing in the morning and then vacating the room other teacher for afternoon work. It is impossible procure suitable rooms in town by renting, a rental would probably amount to more than intefring bonds. Additional school room is imperative manded—this city is growing. As the school said in their open letter in our last week's issue three new families have moved into the district this year, increasing the number of school children 126. These children need school room, and it is the well-wishers of the community to provide them. Not to do so would be criminal.
John McGonigle, the veteran editor of the Vernacular, is out in a spirited editorial against Bidolph Hearst, and that budding statesman has ahead when the democratic state convention blues at Santa Cruz. Franklin K. Lane and Jason Phelan of San Francisco are sharpening up their hawks for the Hearst scalp, and Ed Leake of Wood Congressman Bell of the First district, Alfred M. Bakersfield are all off the reservation indulgence dances. If Stephen M. White were alive think you Bill Randolph were a candidate for the east office in the gift of the people?
If there are those who think that there is no new under the sun, let them ponder the finding agricultural department to the effect that a hen an animal. And if that proves quite easy let them sider the verdict of a Brooklyn justice when he de that peanuts are fruit.
April 9th, voters of this school had opportunity of voting upon an ordinance for the erection of a new more school room is needed;ation is not disputed, and it is up divide the room. At present half in the first and second grades, being school in the morning and considerable discussion has arisen during the week in reference to the sample ballots mailed voters for next Monday's election. These sample ballots have a circle above the first group of candidates together with the instruction, "To vote a straight ticket stamp a cross within this circle." Those candidates whose names appear in the second column complain that this circle gives those whose names appear in the first column an unfair advantage. City Clerk Merritt said yesterday that a circle would be placed over the second column of nominees as well as over the first group, thus giving all a fair show. Some difference of opinion exists as to the proper manner of marking tickets, so as not to endanger their being thrown out by the election board. The safest course for voters is to refrain from stamping within the circle, unless it is desired to vote a straight ticket. Inasmuch as the names of Bissell and Darling appear in the first column and those of Miller and Tyler on the second, voters who wish to cast their ballots for Bissell and Miller (Sunday-closing candidates) had better keep the stamp out of the circle, and this holds true of those who wish to vote for Darling and Tyler. Keep your cross out of the circles and stamp in the squares opposite the names of those whom you desire to vote for.
EXONERATED.
C. E. Smith, accompanied by his sister, Mrs. A. S. Bowen, has returned home from Colorado Springs, after an absence of two months, completely exonerated of the charge of embezzlement placed against him. Some years ago Mr. Smith was clerk of that city and at the same time the city treasurer became short in his accounts. After he left Colorado some of his enemies tried to connect his name with the shortage. Mr. Smith went back to Colorado to clear the matter up. When the case was called it was thrown out of the court within a minute, so far as Mr. Smith was concerned in the action, and he was vindicated by the judge in less time than it takes to tell it.
