It is announced from Santa Ana that the effort to secure right-of-way for Huntington's electric railway through Garden Grove is about to be given up. Probably the effort might as well be given up, if the committee in charge of the work persists in asking right-of-way without remuneration. Easements must be paid for, especially when, as in the present case, they are projected diagonally through scores of property holdings of five and ten acres in area. The object is to secure a bee-line between Los Angeles and Santa Ana. Huntington has offered to make the run in 30 minutes, which beats the steam railway time all hollow. In the beginning the Santa Ana board of trade promised the railway people it would procure for them free right-of-way over the route indicated. When Huntington's surveyors appeared upon the scene asking that the promise be made good, the county seat board of trade did—what? Its members projected a "mass meeting," at which more or less enthusiasm was manifested, and then asked the ranchers to practically surrender their homes to the railway company on the quiet. The board of trade has been the object of no little laughter throughout the county. Even after the board of trade has announced its intention of throwing up the sponge, there remains the old-fashioned method of procedure: that of purchasing right-of-way, paying therefore fair rates for what approaches the confiscation of the property of these small five and ten-acre ranchers. They look askance at this diagonal right-of-way, and it is perfectly proper they should do so. Let us have the electric railway in Orange county, even if it comes on this proposed Garden Grove route, but let us not ask the farmers of this section to give up their property without compensation. If right-of-way is worth having, it is worth paying for. "Gen." H. A. Admiral O'Neill said that that queen be answered now because the Idaho and were intended to fight and not to run away. This year's returns have convinced the plant-breeding department that a deer tree has indeed been produced—a variety grow farther north—and shedding its leaves like the apple, will mature its crop in some orange will restore the industry of Florida before the hard frosts of ten years giving the tree a much more northern range; little oranges was received last week by from southern experimental stations where hybrid trees are growing. Last year two first fruits—were gathered, and their arrival occasioned much enthusiasm. The first indication of what would be produced between the Florida sweet orange and the Chinese hedge orange, a product of the greatest difficulty, and after hundred efforts, owing to the widely-differing characteristics of fruit, the seeds of which have been cared. "It is in the second generation that breaks up," explained Albert Woods of their bureau, 'and it is in this breaking-up call it, that we will get a great variety select. What we have now in this first hange which combines quite equally the two parents, from the Florida orange it gets most seedless interior, while from its Chip gets its reduced anne its tart flavor. PIERCE, who is serving sentence as justice of the peace of Los Angeles township fined an offending milk peddler, who had been found guilty of selling milk tainted with formalin, in the penal sum of $150 more than the law allowed. The milk man appealed to the higher court, which sustained the decision of the lower court to the amount of $100, remitting the $150 remaining. There has been much sickness in Los Angeles due to impure milk, the town has been upon the verge of an epidemic of this malady. "Gen.' Pierce's vigorous sentence is to be commended, when the full meaning of the situation dawns upon one, but the question arises why the devil didn't he sentence the man to death and thereby enshrine his name as a topnotcher in the scroll of fame. JIM SLEEPER amused himself last year in seeking the Democratic nomination for sheriff, only to be beaten in convention by a few votes in one of the closest political contests of the campaign. This year he has devoted his time to farming and has just cleaned up the tidy sum of $30,000, as a result of the season's work. Immediately after threshing his grain he sold his outfit, and within a few days purchased another and a larger one. He will farm on the Trabuca the coming year, having leased an extensive acreage in that neighborhood. If we should have several good wet years, and Jim cleans up as much money in each of them as he did this year, he may trot out again for that nomination when the boys begin talking politics. UNITED STATES DISTRICT JUDGE MORRIS M. ESTEE died at Honolulu last Tuesday morning of prostration, following an operation performed two days ago for kidney trouble. Morris M. Estee for many years took a prominent part in the development of California. He came to California in 1859 and after several years of mining and study of law he was admitted to practice in 1859. He was prominent as a Republican leader and in 1888 was chairman of the convention that nominated Benjamin Harrison for president. He was twice a candidate for governor of California, but each time was defeated. In 1900 he was appointed district judge for Hawaii by President McKinley. WITHIN the prison walls at San Quentin a serious riot was narrowly averted Sunday afternoon. Every endeavor is being made by Warden Tompkins to prevent the facts of the affair reaching the public through the press. All the guards have been cautioned against telling of the occurrence, while trusty convicts are, it is said, particularly ordered not to divulge the identity of those concerned in the trouble. However, ELECTIONS will be held in eleven states on November 3. Full state tickets are to Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, tucky, Iowa and Mississippi, while in New sylvania, Nebraska and Colorado a justice courts, Regents of the State University, or officers are to be chosen. Municipal offices selected in Greater New York, San Francisco Lake. The Prohibitionists have a ticket except Colorado, the Socialists in all excland Colorado, the Populists in two states Colorado; and the Socialist Labor party in York, Massachusetts and Ohio. Fusion only one state (Nebraska) though the New York indorsed the Democratic nominee of the Court of Appeals. The most interest in the east are the state elections in Rhode Island, and the municipal and county in New York City. In Maryland, the governor, Comptroller and Attorney-General Edwin Warfield, the Democratic candidate issue with Stevenson A. Williams, the nominee. The offices of Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney-General will be selected in Rhode Island. Some heads the Republican ticket, and Lucas present executive occupies the same position Democratic ticket. Last year Garvin of the Republicans by securing an election every other successful candidate was Massachusetts will choose a full state Republican candidates were renominated sides having been Governor this year, Lieutenant-Governor for three years. Democratic candidate was last year's nominee Pennsylvania will elect an Auditor-General and two Judges of the Superior Court. The liveliest contest is in Ohio, where Myrtle and Tom L. Johnson, both of Cleveland, on the Republican and Democratic tickets A. Hanna and Joona H. Clark are struggling bers of the Legislature, which will elect a senator. In Iowa, Albert B. Cummings second race for Governor, his opponent by B. Sullivan, who is depending on the Delegates Populists having their own State tick Gov. Every endeavor is being made by Warden Tompkins to prevent the facts of the affair reaching the public through the press. All the guards have been cautioned against telling of the occurrence, while truely convicts are, it is said, particularly ordered not to divulge the identity of those concerned in the trouble. However, from facts so far learned it seems that Sunday about 3 o'clock, while the prisoners were entering the dining hall for the last meal of the day, one convict left the lockstep line to recover something dropped by him in walking. The nearest guard, a new attache of the penitentiary, violently jerked the prisoner into line at the same time dealing him a vicious blow over the head with a heavy hickory cane. The convict fell insensible and was carried to the hospital, where he lies in a precarious condition. His fellow prisoners during the meal became enraged at his treatment, and, upon leaving the room, the more desperate ones looked for the guard who had done the injury. Other guards saw impending trouble and started to get the officious guard out of the way. The convicts also realized the move and rushed pell mell for the outside door, yelling "kill him!" and declaring vengeance. The guard was eventually spirited through the rear entrance and with great difficulty the maddened inmates were quieted down, returned to their cells and locked up. The proposed battleships Idaho and Mississippi are to be in many respects the best fighters in the United States navy. Those vessels are the pride of the naval boards on construction and are on lines which have for a long time been advocated by the Hearst newspapers—namely, well armed fighters with the best possible speed. The Idaho and Mississippi are to make seventeen knots speed. The Maine on her run from Culebra to Currituck, reported some days ago made 15.9 knots, and the department considers this an excellent record. The Oregon made an average of thirteen knots in her famous run to Santiago. The two 13,000-ton naval machines are to be armed with fifty-two guns each, as follows: In main battery four 12-inch guns of 45 caliber; in two turrets eight 8-inch guns of .45 caliber; in four turrets eight 7-inch guns of .45 caliber in casements on President Roosevelt is now at work message to the regular session of congress. No new matters for him to discuss and enter which occupied considerable space in message will not be touched upon. They be shorter than usual. Opinion is whether he will submit the isthmian case again at this time, as it is known that his tenience should be exercised still furtherbia. New propositions are constantly taken it is possible that Columbia will come for plan which will have to be submitted in States in the form of a new treaty. Risking considerable by so doing, for a reason in the senate would encourage the advocates to new efforts, and it would be considered irritation over the rejection treaty proposed by the United States. Belief, however, is that some deal will with Columbia. Canal matters are considerable time and energy, not only in the department, but at the White House, but g is maintained as to what is doing. The 7-inch guns are of a new type and in the secondary battery twelve 3-inch rifle guns, four 1-pounder guns, two field two machine guns, six automatic guns—two guns. Admiral O'Neill made thisiment as to the armor on these vessels as the Illinois class of 11,525 tons displace-amount of armor assigned to these vessels which is equal to 25.9 per cent of the trial vessels of the Illinois class." The Mississippi will thus have relatively stronger in the Illinois, Alabama, Kearsarge, etc., O'Neill was asked if the highest possible gotten out of these vessels and if not might be overhauled by foreign battle-ware O'Neill said that that question need not now because the Idaho and Mississippi do fight and not to run away. Returns have convinced the experts of the department that a deciduous orange has been produced—a variety which will north—and shedding its leaves in autumn will mature its crop in summer. This restore the industry of Florida to its poorest hard frosts of ten years ago, besides a much more northern range. A peck of was received last week by Mr. Woods experimental stations where these young trees growing. Last year two specimens—are gathered, and their arrival at the designated much enthusiasm. They were the kind what would be produced by a cross Florida sweet orange and the hardy trifoiledge orange, a product obtained with difficulty, and after hundreds of futile efforts the widely-differing characteristics of the year, the hybrid yielded its second crops of which have been nourished with the second generation that the hybrid ablained Albert Woods of the plant-growth and it is in this breaking-up process, as we will get a great variety from which to have now in this first hybrid is an orchines quite equally the traits of both. The Florida orange it gets juicy and all interior, while from its Chinese parent it and its tart flavor. The tree combines tics of both, but from the hardy one it being deciduous and its ability to resist if we never should get anything more than this hybrid, we would consider the ac-ctive value. He is the one vertebrate creature peculiar to the British Isles. All the rest of our fauna is duplicated elsewhere, and even his cousin, the black cock, has foreign relations, but the true grouse exists nowhere in the world except within the United Kingdom, and considering what a noble game bird he is, how hardy and plucky and how magnificent in his flight, the fact is really something to be proud of.—London Globe. Strong Coolies. The power of endurance of the Chinese cooly is marvelous. Many will travel over forty miles, carrying a heavy load on their backs and think nothing of it. "One day he brought along smelts dealing out to customers at every station till he got to Suncook, where blew his horn and an old woman came out and wanted six, just a pattern—it'vegot left,你're在‘nick of time’,said he,and he began to count them and found only five。Horiz this Miss Nancy - wonder why it is such terrible swearers? Dieppie boasts of being most ancient of all the "bains de mer."Henry III repaired thither in 1578 "to bath in sea in order to cure certain allments from which he suffered." For a long time dieppie baths were reported to be efficuous in cases of hydrophobia When Henry IV little dog,Fanor, had been bitten by a big dog, supposed to be mad,它 dispatched to dieppie in charge of a groom of the chamber,“pour et monile dans la mer,”and Mme.d Davigne relates that some ladies of the court who had been bitten by a mad dog went there in 1671. It was, however, the Duchess de Herry who popularized Dieppe.Sim went there regularly from 1824 to 1833 and took part in a really remarkable ceremony of inauguration on the beach While cannot thundered and bells pealed and bands played she publicly entered the water, led by hand by the "royal medical inspector of the baths,"who was attired in even dress with kid gloves One would give a great deal for a snap shot of that表演 being long extinct. The War Department has made publie the reports of the military attache in foreign capitals dealing with the military strength of the world powers. The report in Japan and Russia is most interesting and timely. Russia's budget has been increased three and a half million dollars, and approximate figures show that Russia's peace strength is a million men and her war strength a million and three-quarters. Japan has on a peace footing less than 200,000. Germany's present strength is half a million, and France nearly equal to Austria has 300,000 and Switzerland has nearly the same, which could be instantly doubled with thoroughly well drilled men. Great Britain's standing army, exclusive of India, is 200,000. There are 75,000 troops in India and half a million militia. Spain has 120,000 regulars. Brazil has only 15,000. One well known military terms, "sentinel" and "hussar," afford capital instances of the remarkable manner in which a nation does its word twisting. At first sight there seems little connection between the Latin word sentina, signifying the hold of a ship, and a soldier keeping watch over his sleeping comrades. The connecting link is afforded by the word sentinator, the Roman who pumped the hold of Caesar's galleys free of bilge water. Upon his constant vigilance depended the lives of the entire ship's company. Similarly the word "hussar" is merely a Hungarian term signifying "twentieth." It arose in this manner: When Matthias Corvinus became king of Hungary in 1458 he was extremely afraid of foreign invasion. He consequently raised an army by the simple expedient of commandeering every twentieth individual in the land; hence the hussar. Un-to-date in every respect is Hutchnson's drug store. Hieldbrandt brought in a trainload of 718 head of cattle on Tuesday evening from Deming, New Mexico. They were bought of Cox & Gonzales, represented in Chino by Silva Wright, and who have extensive ranges throughout Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. The cattle in this shipment were calves, yearlings and two year-olds, all well-bred Herefordes and Shorthorns, and a big contrast to the long-horned Mexican cattle. They are, in fact, some of the finest stock cattle yet brought into this valley. They came through from Deming via the Southern Pacific in fast time—about 24 hours—and not a head was lost in the shipment. Mr. Hieldbrand has placed part of the bunch in his pasture east of Chino, and the rest will be disposed of at different places—Chino Champion. Closing out Andrew estate; 10 acres.
