It is announced another "mass meeting" of people interested in Huntington's electric railway will be held at Garden Grove on Saturday evening to instill energy into the rapidly cooling sentiment about conceding a free right of way for the line through the community. It is added that a delegation of citizens from Santa Ana will be present to assist in the enthusiasm, which for one cause and another seems to have cooled since the full of the moon. Personally, we should like to see the electric railway enter Orange county, be its route what it may, for we consider that no greater benefit could accrue to the county at the present time from any other thing. But business is business, and the Santa Ana board of trade, which some months ago offered Huntington a free right of way through the county, might just as well understand that rights of way through small holdings cost money, and that it might prepare first as last to go down into its jeans and dig up the necessary wherewithal to purchase it. The route, as has been previously pointed out, cuts through scores of holdings, many of them five and ten acres in area, and an easement 100 feet in width running diagonally through these small farms, cutting through barns and residences, is not to be expected without adequate compensation. Nor can adjoining property owners be expected to re-imburse these farmers for such damages as will inevitably be sustained by them. The situation admits of but one business-like conclusion: either an easement must be purchased and paid for or right of way way will not be secured. Nor will it require any great shakes of cash to purchase it. A few thousand dollars will do the trick, and it is up to the county seat board of trade to rise to the majesty of the situation and solve the problem. More strangers are seen upon our streets daily than at any other time in the history with the western part of the country in uphold sturdy Americanism for all parts of the Americalation, and working strenuously for his election. That he should organize for the Louisiana Exposition at St. Louis an exhibit representing of the mining departments of all the land grants and universities of the United States has been of Professor S. B. Christy, dean of the minimum of the University of California. The University now has more students of mining enrolled in any other mining school in the world. The national exhibit to illustrate at methods of instruction in irrigation and irrigation is being organized by Elwood Mead, principal irrigation in the University of California. Mead has just printed his annual report as chapel investigations of the United States Department of Agriculture. The results are recorded of actions carried on in many different parts of the States by Professor Mead's corps of experts; the subjects discussed in this volume are the water and many practical questions connected distribution and use, such as the building off for impounding storm waters along Stony Creek, ifornia and in the Black Hills; means for seepage in the course of streams; irrigation in regions of the East, with a demonstration that to irrigate vegetables and small fruits in New measurements of the silt carried by the stream southwest; methods of pumping water, and the of excessive irrigation. In recent talks which the President has had political friends he has made it clear that longer tolerate the factional disturbances in Delaware. He has gone over the situation thoroughly with Judge Gray, whom he trusts minded jurist, and, as a consequence, he believed full grasp of the situation. The President has formal notice on Senators Ball and Allee that make no further pilgrimages to the executive with conflicting recommendations. He has given and the factions they represent every possibility to get together and reach satisfactory meetings, through which joint and not conflicting dations come to the White House. Apparently recently, there has been no real and easy to do this. The administration has been repeatedly drawn into factional differences, move has been construed as an indication of of the administration to aid one or the other... More strangers are seen upon our streets daily than at any other time in the history of the community, and the tide of in-coming easterners seems steadily setting toward this section. All portions of the county report activity in building, and during the year more substantial improvement has been made than at any previous time in the history of the valley. Anaheim is keeping step with the upward tendency. Many handsome residences have been recently completed and others are building. Moreover, several brick blocks are being contemplated, which, in addition to those recently completed, will give us an air of activity second to no similar community in the state. No locality offers greater advantages to the homeseeker than the country immediately surrounding this city. Residents of the community have the best and cheapest water and electric light rates afforded by any other city, and this fact has traveled beyond our borders. A recent visitor from France, who traveled through Southern California in the interest of a syndicate of Paris capitalists seeking investment in this state, had heard of our municipal utilities and commented upon them favorably in his reports to his home people. No valley in the state offers such opulent possibilities of the soil. Here one crop is barely off the trees when another claims attention. Walnuts are now being harvested, while the orange crop, which bids fair to be the largest ever produced, will in a few weeks fill packing houses to overflowing. Large crops of grain are being sent to market, and on all hands money is coming into the county in greater volume than ever before known. Orange is one of the smallest, but at the same time one of the richest, counties in the state. DENT H. ROBERTS of San Francisco, who has been in Los Angeles for some weeks past in the interest of W. R. Hearst, has leased premises on Broadway, near Fifth, where Mr. Hearst will shortly establish a new morning newspaper. An order has been placed in New York for seventeen linotype machines and two fast presses, and this equipment will, it is said, be shipped to Los Angeles within a few days. Hearst made an offer to purchase one of the Los Angeles morning papers, but the parties could not agree upon terms, yet it is said a purchase of the newspaper in question may be made by the first of the year. Quite a stir has been created in newspaper circles over the appearance of the new paper, which will make its debut in the near future. The annual county convention of the G. A. R. will be held at the headquarters of Sedgwick Post, in Santa Aus, November 4. The morning will be devoted to a business-minded jurist, and, as a consequence, he believe full grasp of the situation. The President formal notice on Senators Ball and Allee that make no further pilgrimages to the executive with conflicting recommendations. Apparently quite recently, there has been no real and easy to do this. The administration has been repeatedly drawn into factional differences, move has been construed as an indication of of the administration to aid one or the other tendring sides. No matter how carefully they has deliberated and how he has considered of the men offered for government positions in Delaware, he has been openly charged with one or the other of the factional leaders. No ident has decided that every future vacancy not covered immediately by a joint recommence the two senators from the state, he will fill with sulting with either of them. Instead, he will business and professional men, and those in to offer good names, irrespective of political relations, and in this way he will fill vacancies. Dent H. The Independent Placentia Fruit Company centrally perfected independent fruit packing company perfected plans for handling the coming season. At the last meeting it was decided to limit pack to 150 cars and a contract was given to Fruit Company to handle the fruit. One man will be doing away with labels. Instead he and name of grower will be printed upon them. The following plan was adopted for doing bus fruit shall be pro-rated. All fruit packed shall name of the grower on the box and shall use identity. The grower shall have the right to and how his fruit shall be sold and when picked and packed. The manner of selling sh cash when possible, otherwise it will be sold or f.o.b. It is strictly understood that each grower has the right to dictate when and how shall be picked, packed and sold with the under however, that all fruit, no matter how so packed by the company and shipped under th company. The idea for this is to endeavor lish's brand that will, by its excellence, commute times the highest market prices. The brand I-X-L. The greatest care will be given in handling the fruit from the orchard to the grading will be careful and all fruit sent to the I-X-L brand will be on a par with any se state. A project for a new city park in Santa Ana been presented to the City Trustees, the broached by S. W. Smith, J. N. Anderson residents in the immediate neighborhood o posed pleasure ground. The land is owned by James McFa The annual county convention of the G. A. R. will be held at the headquarters of Sedgwick Post, in Santa Ana, November 4. The morning will be devoted to a business session at which new officers will be elected and reports of committees heard. At noon a basket lunch will be served, hot coffee and tea being supplied by the women of the Santa Ana post. Speeches by local and visiting veterans will be the order of the afternoon. All patriotic and veteran societies and organizations of the county are invited. There has been in the last few months a great deal of growling on the part of financial interests in the East over the President's policy, both toward capital and toward labor. Criticism of his acts toward capital were based upon his action toward trusts, and criticism of his attitude toward labor was based upon incomplete knowledge of his real feelings upon that subject. The result of this criticism on these two important points has been to create the impression throughout the East and the middle west that Wall street and financial interests generally will oppose Mr. Roosevelt's nomination, and failing in that, will work with money and brains for the election of some conservative Democrat as president of the United States. That impression of the condition of affairs politically in the eastern part of the United States has been wholly justified by the facts until recently. Capital has opposed Mr. Roosevelt and has been upon the point of open revolt against him, but it is so no longer. A correspondent has lately had an opportunity to ascertain just how the great financial factors in New York feel now toward the President, and to know with absolute exactness that their attitude toward him has undergone one of the most remarkable changes in all political history. Six months ago capital would have been almost solidly against Mr. Roosevelt. Today both the Morgan and the Rockefeller interests in New York are almost openly for the President, and before the next National Republican Convention comes around it will be found that both of these two great financial factors stand solidly behind him, behind the principles for which the Republican party stands, and instead of being his political enemies they will be found joined A project for a new city park in Santa Ana has been presented to the City Trustees, the broached by S. W. Smith, J. N. Anderson residents in the immediate neighborhood or posed pleasure ground. They had secured on the block bounded by Wellington, Van F streets, a tract containing about 3½ acres and wished the city to purchase it and construct a park, with bandstand and other facilities. The land is owned by James McFarlane is said to be worth nearly double the price. Some of the trustees were opposed to paying and others desired a more extensive piece arguing that the two small parks which they ready maintains are enough of their kind finally voted to accept the land and main park, provided it can be obtained without city. The original complaint against Ellis Bevans for the illegal dispensing of liquor Santa Ana Social Club was dismissed in Ana township court on Tuesday, on the City Attorney Heathman. Another complaint issued against Bevans and he appeared in $200 bonds to answer. He entered a guilty, and the time of trial was set for October 10 o'clock. Bevans is represented in the Clyde Bishop of Santa Ana and Earl Rogers Angeles, while the city's side is cared for by the torney and former District Attorney William. The election contest of E. T. Langley district Attorney Head will be heard by the Court in session in Los Angeles today. The ballots have been turned over to the county decision may be expected in the case today. W. M. Cline was in town from Los Angeles days ago in the interest of the Pacific Coast ship Co. Mr. Cline has lately had an addit family, a bouncing baby boy having been born household some six weeks ago, whereat he has the dignity of a fond papa, meanwhile my proud boast that the little fellow is the first The which, the kid being a chip off the old doubtless true as gospel, every bit of it. Disher of Garden Grove believes he has found a species of walnut immune to the disease that has attacked the trees, and he is preparing to propagate the variety through budding. He believes that in the budding lies the solution of the trouble and the attainment of the finest quality of nuts to be had. Litten Brothers of Loara report brisk business in grain, they having recently disposed of a number of car loads of wheat, oats and barley. The Littens are reliable people with whom to trade, and look forward to the largest winter's business in the history of their firm. Purchasers make no mistake in looking them up when in need of anything in their line. Mr. Freeman on going home Tuesday afternoon found that a valuable BURGLARIOUS Planets and Suns May Have Solar Bodies Jupiter is much the bifid of the family of stars around our sun; consequently his attraction is greatly possessed, for instance, Jupiter's exploits as a cause very considerable and inconvenience to all the days before his power recognized. In 1770 there appeared which was found to have orbit round the sun of so small a size that Mr. Leverer, calculated it would end with a half years, but in were vainly focused on it it was expected to reappear in 1781 it disappeared. Mr. Lexell plunged into situations and after much that Jupiter was the curious copet had been to plunge into the sphere planet's attraction, with it had been completely its former orbit and flurried a different one of a twister. It has never been seen once on this earth and will be. Jupiter was also respired delay which occurred in that splendid visitant Ley's comet. Halley did not the first discoverer yet. It had appeared at visually, once seventy-fifth and again seventy-sixth. Suddenly as the heavy stage lumbered over the brow of the hill, down which the road plunged at a sharp angle, running through the little town a its foot and ascending the hill beyond the passengers became conscious that their pace had been recklessly increased. Faster and faster they went dashing down the hill at a rate rapidly becoming a furious one. Trees and bushes at last became but a dizzying blur along the road. All clung to the reeling stage and held their breath in terror, while on the stage raced, down the hill with ever increasing speed, into the town, past the hostelry with the waiting host left standing in amaze at the door, past the post office without pause; and upon the road lead up the face of the hill beyond There the pace slackened, and as the incline grew more steep at last the smoking horses came to a standstill With one accord the dazed passenger tumbled out and surrounded the driver who now stood at the head of his seeking leaders. "What is it, Pat? What is it? Did they get away from you?" came the breathless questions. "Nope," replied Pat with a set face "It wor that," pointing grimly before him. There lay the stage tongue dragging uselessly on the ground at the heels of the horses and completely severed from the coach. At a glance the regular driver comprehended the meaning of the danger to which the passen-gers of that stage, deprived of its sole means of guidance, had been exposed and, realizing the miracle of their escape, he turned sick and fainted where he stood. Later, back at the inn, when the excitement had somewhat subsided and fresh horses were being put to the repaired coach, some one turned to Pat and asked: "Pat. what was your first thought when the pole dropped?" "Well sor," he answered, settling the quid more comfortably in his cheek "me furst thought wor,' Lord ha' mercy on our sowls! Thin thinks I to meself.' Jupiter is much the biggest member of the family of stars which revolve around our sun; consequently the power of his attraction is greater than that possessed, for instance, by the earth. Jupiter's exploits as a burglar have caused very considerable annoyance and inconvenience to astronomers in the days before his powers were fully recognized. In 1770 there appeared a fine comet, which was found to have an elliptical orbit round the sun of so comparatively small a size that Mr. Lexell, its discoverer, calculated it would return in five and a half years, but in 1775 telescopes were vainly focused on the spot where it was expected to reappear, and again in 1781 it disappeared all observers. Mr. Lexell plunged into fresh calculations and after much research found that Jupiter was the culprit. The unfortunate comet had been rash enough to plunge into the sphere of the giant planet's attraction, with the result that it had been completely diverted from its former orbit and flung off into quite a different one of a twenty year period. It has never been seen again by any one on this earth and probably never will be. Jupiter was also responsible for the delay which occurred in the return of that splendid visitant known as Halley's comet. Halley found that he was not the first discoverer of this big comet. It had appeared at least twice previously, once seventy-five years before and again seventy-six years before that The astronomer concluded that there would be a further delay in its third return and predicted that its next appearance would be 518 days later. He did not live to see it. But in 1758, the year he had prophesied for its reappearance, astronomers were waiting for it. Miss Maude Valerie White, author of numerous popular songs, has told a number of anecdotes, many of them her own expense. I suppose, she once wrote in the Cornhill Magazine, all composers have had a laugh over the extraordinary mistakes which some times occur in the first proofs of their songs. I remember years ago writing a very sentimental song, in which the line occurred— I've never once regretted the vow I made that day. My feelings may be imagined when I found they had printed— I've never once regretted the row I mad that day. Miss White also told about an amusing mistake which occurred in the programme of one of her concerts: well known singer and very good friend of mine was down to sing my two songs, "To Marry" and "Crabbed Ag and Youth." But the newspaper announced something very different. No content with drawing up a programme of my concert, it drew up a programme of my future, for I read as follows: Mr. Blank To Marry Maude Valeria Whit Crabbed Age and Youth. As I am a good many years older than the friend in question, the coincidence struck me as particularly funny, and I cut the programme out of the newspaper and sent it to him. By the first mall next morning I received an identical cutting from him, with an inquiry whether he was to take this as a formal announcement of our engagement and expressing a mild surprise that he had not been consulted in the matter. He Knew Sir Walter Scott. In a booklet called "Sir Walter Scot and His Country" published in Edinburgh the author quotes this reminiscent from an old man he met who had known the romancer: "Aye," he minded Sir Walter fine. "I seen him driving out in his carriage and pair, wi' Tom Purdie on the boat. He had on a snepherd's tartan plaid and a glengarry cap wi' two black ribbons hanging doon the back. I must has downgone—Walden, he could I—and an awful work he made ower the beast. But he was as pleasant a man as you could speak to, though he wasn't thought muckle of as a pleader when they made him slitrae of Selkirk. Is his bulks you're spiring on? On, ayee we'll find a his bulks ben the hoose." A Progressive Editor. A very rich man once bought a news paper. It was an afternoon newspaper, and he was interested in it for a month or two. A Discriminating Dog. "Yes, the neighbors complain about my dog." "Does he bite?" "No, he's too affectionate.
