MISS GENEVIEVE WILSON. "The Heroine of Manila" Is Now a Health Inspector. Miss Genevieve Wilson, society girl, army nurse, ministering angel to stricken soldiers in the far east, is health inspector for the civic sanitation of the Oranges, that wealthy residential section of New Jersey. A woman of many titles is Miss Wilson, not bestowed by the government or incorporated institutions, but conferred on her by her admirers in the various sections of the world in which she has lived and worked. She is one of Virginia's fair daughters. Her father was a Confederate officer, and none had better claim to the title of "southern belle" than she. She held her court among the young men and women of Virginia until she determined to forego the pleasures of the ballroom for the arduous duties of a hospital nurse. To fit herself for the WORLD'S FAIR NOTES. It has been proposed to reproduce Independence hall for the Pennsylvania building at the world's fair, St. Louis. Colorado onyx, alabastine and cement will be used in the construction of the Colorado building at the world's fair, St. Louis. J. W. Spillman, agrostologist for the United States department of agriculture, is preparing a map of the United States made of plans to be exhibited at the St. Louis exhibition. Charles Stanley, an inventor of San Francisco, is building an airship to enter in the world's fair aerial tournament. It is the most gigantic airship ever attempted, costing $200,000. CYNICISMS. We never knew a man to make a fortune on a side is me. Worrying about you is the same thing as nagging at you. If some pieces of art work were not antique, they would be ugly. Naphtha For Cleaning Gloves. Naphtha cleans gloves as thoroughly as benzine and without the offensive odor of that chemical. About a quarter of a cupful is all that is necessary for one glove, and it is better to clean one glove at a time and throw out the liquid and take fresh for the other glove than to try to do the pair together. Dip the glove in the naphtha, "sozzle" it around and squeeze it gently till it appears to be clean in the parts most exposed to wear. Spread on a clean, dry cloth and rub gently all over. This will remove the last particles of dirt, as proved by the soil on the cloth. This process completed, hang over a chair back to dry. Every one using naphtha or benzine must be cautioned against using either by a light or fire. Fried Kidneys. Skin the kidneys, cut off all the fat and cut them crosswise, in rather thin slices. Returning to America, she took up her course in St. Luke's hospital, Denver, where she won from admiring doctors the title of "Little Wonder." At the outbreak of the Spanish war she volunteered with the Red Cross and was sent immediately to Chickamauga. Her next step was to enter the service of the United States government as army nurse. For one year she was stationed in the Philippines, and her brave deeds among the wounded soldiers there won the title of "the Heroine of Manila." Next she was sent to Nagasaki, where grateful patients named her "Angel." Seven months she spent in the land of the mikado, and when she was ordered home again she had made the circle of the globe. Her last government appointment was at Fort Bayard, N. J., which position she resigned to go to the Oranges. New Jersey is determined to decrease the death list from contagious diseases, and Miss Wilson's specific work is to carry out the plans of the Civic Sanitation association. — Philadelphia Press. ABOUT FISH PONDS. A reader of these notes wants to know something about artificial fish ponds—how to make and care for one. Two things are necessary, one an unfalling supply of pure water, which may be obtained either from a natural spring or an artesian well if the water is not mineralized, the other a location for the pond where it will be exempt from the action of flood water in a wet time. Given these conditions the pond should be not less than eight feet in depth in the center and of any size desired, corresponding to the flow of water from the spring. In such a pond our ordinary food fishes—pike and black bass being the best—should do well if properly fed. Suckers, redhorse and carp should be kept out, also pickerel, which are water wolves. A close watch will have to be kept on predatory minks. We have never known of a case where fish culture in this manner was made a commercial success, but as a pleasing pastime and to furnish a supply of fish for home use it can be done where the conditions named exist. GETTING Acquainted. "We hesitated about renting this place," said the woman who had just moved in, "until we learned that the families on both sides of us owned their houses. It is so unpleasant to live where the people next door are always changing and you never know what kind of neighbors you are going to have." "Yes," responded the woman on the other side of the fence. "That’s one reason why we’re trying to sell our house." —Chicago Tribune. A Fighting Bishop. Skin the kidneys, cut off all the fat and cut them crosswise in rather thin slices. Mix together a tablespoonful of flour and a half teaspoonful of salt. Sprinkle this over the slices of kidney and fry till done in hot butter. Place on a heated platter. Mix a teaspoonful of flour smoothly with a half cupful of cold water and turn it into the pan in which the kidneys were fried. Stir until it boils. If too thick, add a little boiling water, season to taste and stir in a dessertspoonful of tomato catchup. Serve hot with the kidney. Olive Sauce. An olive sauce is an excellent relish to serve with warmed over meats. Brown one tablespoonful of butter, add one heaping tablespoonful of flour and brown again. Add half a pint of beef stock (that made from extract of beef may be used) and stir until smooth and thick. Season to taste, add one tablespoonful of Worcestershire sauce and one dozen olives chopped fine and simmer five minutes. To Destroy Odors. Coffee sprinkled on a hot stove will take away with it every vestige of bad odor. To prevent disagreeable fumes from rising when anything boils over on to the stove sprinkle salt quickly over the place. Best of all, though a trifle expensive, is to put a few droops of oil of lavender in a cup and pour over it boiling water. There is nothing sweeter than the fragrance of old time lavender. On one occasion Bishop Selwyn was going down the river Walkato with a Maori when the latter, who was very lazy, left off paddling the canoe, at the same time muttering that if Selwyn were not a bishop he would—well, "go for him." In a moment the bishop told the man to turn the canoe ashore where, stripping himself of everything episcopal, he said, pointing to his robes, etc: "The bishop lies there; the man is here. I am quite ready; come on." The Maori did not "come on," however, but quietly resumed his work without another murmur.—London Tit-Bits. Spencer of Los Angeles is suing Harry Spencer, her former husband, from whom she was divorced several years ago, to recover certain community property in the form of $1000 on deposit in the First National bank of Santa Ana. Some days ago the case came up on a demurrer to the complaint on the ground that the money belongs to Spencer's present wife, who made affidavit that she had the cash when Spencer married her. This suit is the sequal to the trip made by Spencer and several others to Alaska at the beginning of the gold excitement five or six years ago. With the party as its leader was Paul Tyson, who took his wife along, and after a sufficient stay to convince them that fortune had given them the go-by, the party returned to Los Angeles, where Tyson's wife got a divorce from his wife. Tyson organized another company and got considerable financial backing from Los Angeles and Orange county capital and returned to Alaska, where, after remaining long enough to place his clients' capital where it would presumably do the most good, he reported the collapse of the mining venture and has since dropped out of sight. Mrs. Spencer remained in Los Angeles, but Harry Spencer and the divorced Mrs. Tyson went to Santa Ana and about a year ago were married. At the time the divorce was secured by Spencer from his first wife nothing was said about community property, as there was no such thing in sight; but recently the divorced Mrs. Spencer, having heard of this $1000 on deposit in the First National bank, has laid claim to it as community property. Report of the grape outlook in Almeria, Spain, July 23, 1903, by A. E. Carlton, consular agent. The exportation of the Almeria grape will begin about the first of September, and at present there is every indication of the largest crop in the history of the province. The total number of barrels is placed at 15,000,000. The weather up to this writing has been most favorable to the grape, and if it continues the fruit will be in excellent condition for shipping. Already the early grapes or Castizas are being shipped to England, where a higher price than usual is expected owing to the poor crops in other parts. The prices for these in Almeria, are in consequence somewhat higher than in other years. The season is somewhat advanced and no doubt the first direct boat for America will leave about September 1st. The plan for sending the fruit direct to New York met with considerable success and the local shipping agents inform me that there will be plenty of direct boats this fall, with the usual freight rates. Report on the raisin outlook at Smyrna, Turkey, July 15, 1903, by R. W. Lane, U.S. consul. Sultanas—The coming crop is estimated today at between 45,000 and 49,-000 tons. Eventual results between these figures will depend upon the state of weather during next month. The vineyards are apparently carrying a show of fruit like of which has never before been remembered. Consequently there is considerable disparity in the estimate of exports. The average yield of the last five years has been slightly under 31,500 tons. The stocks remaining in dealers' hands in Smyrna are estimated at about 160 tons. Till within six or seven years ago the average annual production of Sultanas amounted to about 33,000 tons, some seasons having yields running into 40,000 tons. The gradual spread of phylloxera tended to cause a steady annual reduction in the production; but the loss by phylloxera has after a long struggle, been to some extent counterbalanced by the vast plantation of American vines, on which the native plant is grafted. There are, WILL TREES GROW WITHOUT WATER? Expensive Experiment of a Missouri Man in Colorado. Edgar W. Starks of Starkville, Mo., spent $45,000 in fifteen years in trying to prove that fruit trees will grow in Colorado without irrigation if they are properly trained to do so without water. Fifteen years ago he obtained from the state a lease on 80 acres of land near Littleton. He held that certain kinds of fruit trees would flourish without irrigation if the soil were properly stimulated with fertilizers. So he put in these trees and distributed the fertilizer. This failed to work and he lost the difference between his original expenditure and $17,750, which is the value of the improvements upon the property now. To the state board last week Mr. Stark explained his reasons for desiring to purchase the property. He did so in such a successful manner that the board instructed the register to sell the land to him at $50 an acre. This will not be his total investment, however because he must pay $53 an acre for the building of a reservoir and the carrying of water through the Highland ditch to his land. Mr. Stark was anxious to have the deal closed at once, because the ranches in that section have formed a water district for the purpose of providing their lands with moisture. They have bonded every acre at $23 for the purpose of building a reservoir, and have agreed to give the ditch company $30 an acre for supplying water. Compatible Drugs A patient whose physician had delayed him with drugs until he was a shadow of his former magnificent self was informed by the latter to go to the druggist and procure a way-up tonic and take it twice a day. He was also to continue a part of the original formula, but to bank on the tonic, as it seemed to be necessary for him to fill up his trowers' legs. The unfortunate man went to the druggist as he had been commanded and made known his mission. "You want quinine, iron and strychnine," said the druggist, as he felt the patient's pulse. The latter asked if the decoction would jibe with the other stuff he had been taking. "They are quite compatible," replied the druggist. THE BUGLER'S IS well expanded. He uses their fullest capacity. Dickinson arrived at Liverpool on the Celtic today for the meeting of the Alaskan Boundary Commission, which will open in London September 3rd. The Canadian commissioners also are here. United States Ambassador Choate has arranged to give a dinner in honor of Secretary Root, at which all the American and British representatives will be present. The commissioners are already familiar with the facts of the case, which were filed several months ago. At the first meeting of the commissioners next Thursday the Americans and Canadians will submit their briefs, which will be a condensation of the facts and arguments regarding the interpretation of the treaty. The commission will then announce the day on which the oral arguments will be heard. The documents have not yet been made public, but the Associated Press correspondent learns that the whole controversy centers on Canada's efforts to acquire an outlet to the sea. It is known authoritatively that the Canadian agent asserts that, under the Russo-British treaty of 1825, the line properly crosses numerous inlets, including the headwaters of the Lynn canal. The contention seems to be that the inlets, less than six miles wide, belong to Canada. United States Commissioner Foster vigorously opposes this view, holding that the treaty clearly places the line thirty miles inland, following the sinusitis of the coast, thus separating Canada from all the arms of the ocean and putting Porcupine creek and the gold district under American jurisdiction. The American representatives are confident that their position is unassailable. The commissioners expect that the complete consideration of the entire case will take less than two months, and that even should the commission fail to render a majority award, the facts will be clearly established. This will lead to an easier settlement in the future. Secretary Root intends to take advantage of the recess between the filings of the briefs and the oral arguments to witness the British army maneuvers. New High Schools Plans are practically completed for the opening this fall of the new Las Bolsas union high school, the fifth institution of its kind in the county. Until a building can be put up sessions will be held in temporary quarters at Bolsa or Westminster, the location depending upon the number of students from each district. The schoolhouse to be built this year will be placed in all probability between Bolsa and Westminster, giving it an almost central location in the district. About sixty students will enter this year, requiring four teachers. S. A. Crookshanks who is looking over the ground, has been chosen principal, and the remainder of the faculty will be selected by the board Saturday. Prof. Crookshanks is a graduate of the University of California and for two terms was county superintendent of schools in Tulare county. He has also been principal of the high school in Porterville and at Visalia, and comes highly recommended for his work. Bonds for building and equipping permanent quarters for the school will be voted on Saturday, and will questionably carry by a very large majority. The bonds for the Orange union high school, $35,000, carried with only eight votes against. Work on the Orange building is to be commenced at once, the school meantime convening in a public hall. Glanders Several cases of glanders have been reported, and at Los Alamitos one valuable horse was shot by order of the veterinary surgeon, and four others were destroyed at Yorba. Now comes stocks remaining in dealers' hands in Smyrna are estimated at about 160 tons. Till within six or seven years ago the average annual production of Sultanas amounted to about 33,000 tons, some seasons having yields running into 40,000 tons. The gradual spread of phylloxera tended to cause a steady annual reduction in the production; but the loss by phylloxera has, after a long struggle, been to some extent counterbalanced by the vast plantation of American vines, on which the native plant is grafted. There are however, large tracts of land, owned by Turks, laid out in vineyards with native vine. This is due to the conservative nature of the Ottoman farmer. In view of the large production anticipated this year it is likely that prices will rule at lowest level recorded for the past decade. Red Raisins—Coming crop is estimated at 10,000 tons. Black Raisins—Coming crop is estimated at 18,000. At Years a Dyspeptic R. H. The latter asked if the decoction would jibe with the other stuff he had been taking. “They are quite compatible,” replied the good druggist. “From the patient’s or the druggist’s point of view?” meekly asked the patient man. The answer is not recorded, but the drugs must have been compatible, for they worked to a charm and the case was successful. The man died. How’s This? Of the $952,000,000 worth of farm produce shipped from the United States during the fiscal year 1901 more than half was disposed of in the British market. Our agricultural exports to that destination in the year mentioned had the exceptionally high value of $496,000,000. Cotton was decidedly the largest factor in the trade. A pinch in cucumber seed is reported by American Agriculturist. The Statistical Sugar Trade Journal estimates the production of sugar beets and sugar in the United States at 1,777,639 tons of beets and 195,800 tons of sugar. Cane sugar is estimated at 767,200 tons. A Maine hen man reported a profit of $2.67 per bird in American Agriculturist's "money in poultry" contest. It is said that Canada expects an influx of Americans this year to the number of at least 200,000. Much importance is now attached to botany as a study in agricultural colleges. American cattle have the reputation of being the healthiest in the world. Glanders Several cases of glanders have been reported, and at Los Alamitos one valuable horse was shot by order of the veterinary surgeon, and four others were destroyed at Yorba. Now comes the report that a well-defined case has been found at El Toro and another from the Los Angeles county line between here and Long Beach. The Orange county supervisors have been asked to appoint a regular veterinary surgeon to investigate these cases, but the reply is that there is no money in the treasury with which to meet the bills, and the matter has been let go at that. Meantime there are several cases which are supposed to be glanders in the county, and owners of stock are on the anxious seat. "How affectionate you are!" he exclaimed as his wife gave him a kiss entirely unsolicited. The City of Anaheim, with a population of 2500, is situated in the northern part of Orange county, in southern California, 12 miles from the ocean, 4½ miles from the footmills, and 148½ feet above sea level. It is 27 miles from Los Angeles, the second largest city in the State of California. The climatic conditions are the most favorable for out-door life to be found in Southern California. The temperature is extremely unstable. Government Station Santa Ana is after the new government station to be located in California by the Department of Agriculture, and its chamber of commerce is already actively in the fight. P. H. Dorsett, who has been appointed to work in conjunction with Prof. Stubenrauch of the University of California in the selection of the site for the station, was present at a meeting recently held in that city, and addressed the directors on the present status of the matter. The Bureau of Plant Introduction, Mr. Dorsett pointed out, through A. S. Peters, head of the department, has decided to locate somewhere in California a government station for the propagation and testing of imported plants and trees, with a view of discovering and introducing those which should prove of economic value to horticulturists in this country. The matter of examining the different sites and making a recommendation as to the most suitable one is now in the hands of P. H. Dorsett, who was connected with the local government station last year, and Prof. Stubenrauch of the botanical department of the University of California. After discussing the matter the chamber appointed Robert McFadden a committee to select and recommend, with the assistance of two members to be selected by him, sites for the consideration of Mr. Dorsett and Prof. Stubenrauch. James Irvine, owner of the San Joaquin ranch, has offered to lease for an indefinite period a tract of fifty acres of land for the purpose, and other pieces in the neighborhood of El Modena and Olive are under consideration and will undoubtedly be offered. Mr. Dorsett has lived in Santa Ana for more than a year and is familiar with the advantages of this section in the way of equable climatic conditions, freedom from frosts, richness and fertility of soil, and constant water supply. He spent Saturday with directors of the chamber in examining sites before going north to confer with Prof. Stubenrauch. Fearful Odds Against Him? Bedridden, alone and destitute. THEDFORD'S BLACK-DRAUGHT THE ORIGINAL LIVER MEDICINE A sallow complexion, dizziness, biliousness and a coated tongue are common indications of liver and kidney diseases. Stomach and bowel troubles, severe as they are, give immediate warning by pain, but liver and kidney troubles, though less painful at the start, are much harder to cure. Theford's Black-Draught never fails to benefit diseased liver and weakened kidneys. It stirs up the torpid liver to throw off the germs of fever and ague. It is a certain preventive of cholera and Bright's disease of the kidneys. With kidneys reinforced by Theford's Black-Draught thousands of persons have dwelt immune in the midst of yellow fever. Many families live in perfect health and have no other doctor than Theford's Black-Draught. It is always on hand for use in an emergency and saves many expensive calls of a doctor. Mullins, S.C., March 10, 1901. I have used Theford's Black-Draught for three years and I have not had to go to a doctor since I have been taking it. It is the best medicine for me that is on the market for liver and kidney troubles and dyspepsia and other complaints. Rev. A. O. LEWIS. Choice of Three Routes EAST and WEST 'Sunset' 'Ogden' 'Shasta' The City of Anaheim, with a population of 2500, is situated in the northern part of Orange county, in southern California, 12 miles from the ocean, 41 miles from the foot-ills, and 148 feet above sea level. It is 27 miles from Los Angeles, the second largest city in the State of California. The climatic conditions are the most favorable for out-door life to be found in Southern California. The temperature is extremely uniform, seldom rising above 90 degrees in summer, or falling below 22 degrees in winter. The abundance of sunlight and the absence of sharp frosts and cold winds make it a place especially acceptable to those desiring to escape the severe climate of the east. The country is very attractive. It is practically level, with just sufficient slope from the hills to afford adequate drainage. The roads are level, well graded, and well kept, affording excellent opportunities for cycling and driving. The soil is a rich sandy loam which never bakes, making it a very easy ground to work; thus lending itself readily to the cultivation of berries, nuts, oranges, etc. The variety of products, and the possibility of procuring small tracts of land at low figures, and on easy terms, make our section of the county very attractive and advantageous for truck raising, or for farming on a small scale. The following are a few of the products: oranges, lemons, walnuts, grapes, peaches, apricots, sugar beets, berries and vegetables of all kinds. Anaheim is the possessor of a Building and Loan Association, Water company, two railroads, fruit cannery and drier, large oil industry, ostrich farm, bank, several adequate commercial houses, two hotels and two newspapers. The city also owns its water and lighting plant. FACTS ABOUT ORANGE CO. The census bureau has issued a bulletin on agriculture in California which we quote from extensively in another part of this issue.
