J.J. HUNTER has returned from a two-months' camping trip through Yosemite and the southern coast counties, accompanied by his family. While admitting the delights of the big trees and the picturesque valley, where his party spent several weeks in communing with nature, he tells us that so far as business is concerned neither the central tier of counties nor those farther south on the coast can hold a candle to this valley, where a most spirited development of natural resources has existed for several years past. The barley crop in the San Joaquin valley is extremely short, which accounts for the high prices now ruling for the cereal hereabouts. He found Fresno quite a bustling burg, but not in it with half a score of Southern California towns. Coming south, through the coast counties, he found Santa Barbara a locality badly afflicted with walnut blight, and takes no stock in published reports that the disease is attributable to irrigation, for the walnuts in that county, which have no irrigation except that afforded by rainfall, show blight in a greater degree, if possible. than trees in orchards where there is a water system. Ventura county was found to be on the whole the most favored county traveled through, but Jack wouldn't trade his ranch for whole valleys looked over in his camping tour.
Mr. HOLLINGSWORTH, our young fellow-townsman of the pencil and sketchbook, is pursuing his studies at a Los Angeles school of art and design, and is making commendable progress, and will probably graduate in advance of the usual course of study. His sketches show the result of careful study, coupled with the best of artistic instruction, and one of these days we may see him classed among the Oppers and Swinertons of the public prints. The profession is one that has enhanced the brightest minds for many years, but never has it attained such prominence before the public as at the present, and we believe the caricaturist is just upon the threshold of his coming importance. Mr. Hollingsworth has long since forgotten that he has but one arm, and that one his left, but by the two water companies, one on this side, the other upon the other side of the river. Mr. Bradford spends as one in authority, he having been a member of local board of directors for a number of years prior and knowing the subject treated of intimately well. His communication should be read by irrigator in the district.
THAT WATER POWER
EDITOR GAZETTE:—Since mailing my last week's article to the press, some arguments in favor of sharing their power between the companies have been brought up any attention which might as well be answered now.
An opponent of co-operation used the partition between adjoining buildings as an illustration.pose a man seeks to utilize a neighbor's wall as part his own building, would he expect to do so without ing for the privilege? Can the S.A.V.I.Co. acquire an interest in three miles of canal and right way without returning any equivalent therefore answer to both questions, certainly not. Half the ent cost of construction of the wall and half the of the land on which it rests should be returned to owner. The S.A.V.I.Co. has already offered to the A.U.W.Co. half the present cost of construct three miles of ditch and half the value of the right way, rating barren, broken land at $100 per acre. opponent of co-operation admitted that the rating enough for the land; but he tried to justify a charge with another illustration, as follows:
“If two men invest equal sums in a business prise, they are supposed, in all fairness, to receive benefits from the partnership or an equal division profits. The two water companies create a power our elevation and your water and your company the whole thing.” The Anaheim Plain Dealer, after stating some of the advantages that would accrue west side by co-operation, puts the power, prop interrogatively thus: “The A.U.W.Co. makes the possible, why should it not share in the usufruct as the partnership illustration and the Plain Dealer question contain the gist of Sherwood’s argument share in the power, I will answer fully and fairly last shred. Note carefully and mark the conclusion.
The partnership principle only applies to the lar business for which such partnership was formed does not extend to separate, personal, private or individuals forming the partnership. The agreement between the companies contemplates all the water, surface and subsurface, out of the or near Scully’s point and bringing it down in order on the north side to a point opposite the presence of the S.A.V.I.Co. where it would be divided.
at a Los Angeles school of art and design, and is making commendable progress, and will probably graduate in advance of the usual course of study. Mr. Hollingsworth has long since forgotten that he has but one arm, and that one his left, but the excellence of his work with brush and pencil would tend to show the fallacy prevalent to us all, that without one on each side of us we should not long continue in this strenuous race of life. He is all the more to be congratulated. We think the future holds a place secure for young men who persevere as he has done, and who early get a neckhold upon the vicissitudes which beset life's pathway.
GODFREY BAUMGARDT of Los Angeles has purchased five acres of land on Center street, opposite the high school, and has erected preliminary buildings to be used in the manufacture of all kinds of hair brushes. Mr. Baumgardt was located in Los Angeles for a period of seven years, giving employment to a number of mechanics, but he has been forced to leave that city by reason of the constantly increasing rent charges and the impossibility of procuring additional room for his business. He is one of the advance guard of the many business men seeking locations outside the big town. Others have been looking over our territory with similar views, and we look for a constantly increasing influx of these desirable settlers.
Mr. Baumgardt imports bristles from New York and will manufacture clothes brushes, hair brushes and other articles of like make, and believes the constantly expanding market for these articles guarantees him a fine business. As soon as the necessary buildings are erected he will employ a number of hands at his factory, and he has the best wishes of the community for success.
E. F. KELLOGG of the West End is more strongly impressed with the necessity for constructing the Yorba reservoir than has before characterized his position, always one of utmost favor, relative to that enterprise. He has fifteen acres of corn growing on his home place, which this week had to be irrigated between runs with water from a neighboring plant; otherwise the crop would probably have been a failure. Water from this artificial source costs him $1.25 per hour, while from the company the cost is not to exceed half that. But runs are now five weeks apart, and corn needs water oftener than that in order to make a crop. Had the reservoir been constructed, not only would he have been able to procure the necessary water at a cheaper rate, but thousands of acres of vacant land south and west of town, lying outside the water company's limits, would now be under cultivation. The reservoir means much to this region, and should be taken from the slough of despond, where its enemies have thrust it and be considered by fair-minded men as a project of wide-reaching importance to irrigators in this valley.
The partnership principle only applies to the lar business for which such partnership was formed does not extend to separate, personal, private or the individuals forming the partnership. The agreement between the companies contemplates all the water, surface and subsurface, out of the sea or near Scully's point and bringing it down in one on the north side to a point opposite the present of the S. A. V. I. Co. where it would be divided. Extent the partnership illustration would apply partner contributing equally to the investment of expenses and each receiving an equal share of the same place and at the same elevation.
It is an old proverb that "you cannot eat your food and keep it too;" the A. U. W. Co. cannot sell interest in the upper Cajon and still own the whole Crediting itself with the elevation is equivalent to company's claiming sole ownership in the canopy produces the elevation. To get such credit the A. Co. would have to keep its ditch, enlarge it at expense and bring all the water down to the division free of charge. If on the other hand the S. A. W. should buy a half interest in that canal and pay all the expenses for enlarging and operating, there no legitimate line of reasoning could it be said that A. U. W. Co. furnishes elevation for more than half of the water.
Recurring again to the point touched upon in article, that where one company would get a way other would get high irrigation, the fairness division can best be understood by commercial beginning. Suppose that there were no ditches either side and that the two sides would agree hence at Scully's point and come down together practicable, each side paying half the expenses taking half the water at the point of separation. Ally the joint canal would proceed down the no until it reached the point opposite the present of the S. A. V. I. Co. and there it would stop. Thing of the canyon and the bending of the river northwest below that point would make it unpractical for the east side to continue farther in the join Thus far the two sides would be equal parts would turn the same quantity of water to each same elevation as they separated. Both might their water down side by side and get the same both might carry it off on the same grade and same high irrigation, or one might keep its share grade for high irrigation and the other might share down for power; it would be optional for use its own share as it might see fit after thiection.
That is the way co-operation would have worked if it been undertaken at the start; there is now why the two sides might not get into their relation toward each other, if both were disposed fairly. When, however, the east side plans to take out its share for power, immediately they sets up a clamor for an interest in such power, too without relinquishing any of the service or share, which it is using for high irrigation. Side might just as well claim half the receipts west side for the high irrigation, it wouldn't more selfish and unreasonable.
It follows-from the foregoing that where company is in possession of a part of the right of wa
Mr. Attorney Williams, who appeared for the roysterers last week arrested on charges of peace disturbance, fast driving and general convivial hilarity, said the people of this city were not going about the matter in the right way. In the first place, his clients, he said, should not have been arrested at all—they were innocent of the charge, and so on. In the next place, Mr. Williams said, the fact that saloons remain open here on Sunday and Sunday evening was a standing invitation to the hilariously disposed of all sections of the county to come here and carouse and let off surplus steam to their heart's content. And more to the same effect.
The fact that the jury promptly found Dewitt guilty, even though he had the benefit of Mr. Williams as counsel, proves that the peace officers had the right sow by the ear, so to speak; and they will probably in future, as in the past, exert their efforts in preservation of the peace. The attorney's argument that because saloons remain open these chaps have the right to come to town and disturb the peace is a novel way of looking at it.
"Close your saloons on Sunday, and this thing will cease," he said.
Very good, but how then about Saturday night or any other night in the week? To sum the matter up in a nutshell, these hilarious chaps will either have to remain away from this city, or behave themselves when here, Sunday evening or any other evening. Because saloons exist at all is no reason why they have a license to disturb the peace.
Mr. Bradford has an article in this issue replying to Mr. Sherwood regarding the matter of joint action
That is the way co-operation would have wished it been undertaken at the start; there is now why the two sides might not get into the liaison toward each other, if both were dispossess fair. When, however, the east side plans to take out of its share for power, immediately the sets up a clamor for an interest in such power, too without relinquishing any of the service of share, which it is using for high irrigation. Side might just as well claim half the receipts west side for the high irrigation, it wouldn't more selfish and unreasonable.
It follows-from the foregoing that where our pany is in possession of a part of the right of waiver in the joint work, it should charge the other only a fair price for a half interest. Otherwise vestments would be unequal, and the one partner be fleecing the other from the very start—no good method of "cementing friendly relations," could be no justification of an overcharge on the of what might be done with the water after division cause that would be forcing partnership exact individual interests, which would cut both ways ready shown. Neither could an extortionate justified on the ground of the A.U.W.Co.'s monopoly of elevation to produce power. By token the S.A.V.I.Co. has a monopoly of the produce power; but our company is not seeking for power purposes, hence there would be mand. A monopoly without demand may be kept; but it is very unprofitable to part with words, the A.U.W.Co. has no adjunct to a waiver outside of its own ditches that it can offer for some years ago a Chinaman approached train at West Orange and asked: "How much heim!" "Four bits," replied the conductor muchee; me walkee,' answered John. Even a C objects to being held up. The A.U.W.Co. along the only available passenger at a fair can char e three or four prices and the S.A will walk. In other words, the S.A.V.I.Co. to join the A.U.W.Co. in a fair, square agree share and share alike from the point of division; but failing in such an arrangement would prefer to remain apart.
It would seem as though that water pany been so completely ventilated this time that her claim would or could be made to it. ing the case, it would seem the part of w consider the joint agreement in the light of the refor which it is sought, viz.: The increase of our pply and the lessening of expenses in water develop operating a joint canal. Respectfully, SAMUEL
Mines, one on this side, the other near river. Mr. Bradford speaks of having been a member of the company for a number of years past, subject treated of intimately and motion should be read by every person.
WATER POWER
Once mailing my last week's article mentions in favor of sharing the water companies have been brought to light as well be answered now. Operation used the partition wall findings as an illustration. "Supply a neighbor's wall as part of what he expect to do without pay. Can the S.A. V. I. Co. hope to three miles of canal and right-of-way any equivalent therefor?" In this, certainly not. Half the press of the wall and half the value of rests should be returned to the Co. has already offered to pay to the present cost of constructing and half the value of the right-of-flower land at $100 per acre. The opinion admitted that the rating was out he tried to justify a higher illustration, as follows:
Equal sums in a business enterprise, in all fairness, to receive equal ownership or an equal division of the water companies create a power with water and your company wants Anaheim Plain Dealer, after fairly advantages that would accrue to the action, puts the power proposition.
The A.U. W. Co. makes the power not share in the usufruct? Now, illustration and the Plain Dealer's list of Sherwood's argument for a will answer fully and fairly to the fully and mark the conclusions.
Principle only applies to the participatory partnership was formed, and separate, personal, private affairs of the partnership. The proposed companies contemplates taking and subsurface, out of the river at hand bringing it down in one canal point opposite the present intake where it would be divided. To that
Two Democrats Meet
The horse editor noticed in town the other day two well-known Democrats of Orange county who passed one another upon the sidewalk as though they were unacquainted, yet both had taken an active part in last year's county convention. One was M. L. Rogers of the East Side, the other was Judge Ord of Los Alamitos. The newspaper man called them back and introduced them and they shook hands cordially.
"What state are you from?" inquired Rogers of the Los Alamitos man.
Vermont," replied Ord in that laconic vernacular he affects. "What state are you from?"
Originally from New York, but I lived many years in Iowa."
Then both walked down the street arm in arm together.
Later in the afternoon, before the outgoing train pulled out of the depot the Los Alamitos man said warmly:
"Nice man, Mr. Rogers. We are going to be good friends. I'm surprised we haven't become acquainted before."
Shortly thereafter the scribe ran across the East Sider.
"Nice man, Judge Ord," he said. "I'm surprised we never became acquainted. We are going to be the best of friends, and I'm going down to his house to beat him a game of whist." And everything was lovely.

The August number of the California Ladies' Magazine contains a halftone portrait of Mrs. Carrie Ey of Santa Ana as chaplain of the Grand Lodge of the W.R.C. The number is devoted to the encampment of the Grand Army and W.R.C. held in San Francisco, and is a handsome edition of this journal.
Mr. Beamer has been a superintendent of the Santa Fe lines in Southern California 15 years, having come out with General Manager K. H. A certain young business man in town, being presented by a friend from the country with a fine watermelon hiked into Fritz Martin's meat market to have it placed in the refrigerator to cool it off for the afternoon.
Along in the middle of the past meridian session he went after the melon, and as he entered the refrigerator, Fritz, in his playful spirit, shut and looked the door, keeping the man inside several minutes, during which time he kept off the chills by eating several links of liver sausage. End of the story.

Copies of the resolution are to be forwarded to the California representatives in congress.
La Habra's first annual farmers' institute was one of the best attended institute meetings held this season. A large exhibit of fruits and vegetables were displayed in an adjoining room. S. W. Baldwin exhibited a pumpkin that weighed 125 pounds and measured five feet six inches round and six feet eight inches long. This pumpkin was raised without irrigation, was planted May 10 and lacked one day of being three months old. Many of the exhibits were donated to the Fullerton board of trade, which forwarded them to the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, where they will be added to the regular Orange county exhibit.

In response to a large demand from fruit growers for information on remedies for insects, Prof. F. C. He says that his observations in the field have led him to see that even in California, where this matter has been agitated for many years in only a small fraction of the cases where injury might be prevented, is the proper treatment made. He places the annual amount of preventable loss at some hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Prof. Woodworth classified insect pests it no four divisions: Root feeding, boring, sap-sucking and defoliating, concluding his paper with a number of remedies, suggested on account of their cheapness and effectiveness.
Dry powders are restricted to three kinds—air-slaked lime, sulphur and Paris green, or other arsenicals. Gas treatments are only recommended in two forms—carbon bisulphide and hydrocyanic-acid gas. Sprays or washes are the most important remedies. These are lime, salt and sulphur mixed; sulphide of potash wash, rosin soap, distillates, kerosene emulsion and arsenicals.
SEEDS AND PLANTS
California is about to become the depot for seed and plant distribution for the whole United States. Instead of the work being carried on by many agricultural stations in the States, the Department of Agriculture at Washington has planned to concentrate in California.
Arnold V. Stubenrauch of the University of California has been appointed as one of the committee to select a site for the proposed station.
P. H. Dorset of Los Angeles, the other member of the committee, was also appointed today.
This committee is called upon to select a site for 100 acres in some fertile and well-irrigated spot in California.

While Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Brown of Fullerton and Miss Orabella Chilton of Santa Ana were bathing at Newport Beach Wednesday evening their wraps were abstracted by an unknown sneak thief. Among the articles was a coat belonging to Mr. Brown and containing valuable private papers and a check for $14 on the Los Nietos Valley bank. The theft is only one of several similar happenings at Newport recently. There is no clew to the miscreants.
