LOCAL JOTTINGS OF INTEREST WEDDING BELLS. Mrs. Margarette Merchant, formerly of Houston, Texas, and Mr. Hochstein of the same city, were married Wednesday evening at the Episcopal Church at 8 o'clock. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Deering. The bride was attended by Miss Zeus, Miss Bayha and the Misses Fledler, while the groomsmen were Herman Stern, Fritz Yungbluth, Fred Rimpau jr., and Murray Paschall. The happy couple will go to house-keeping in one of the Pratt cottages on Philadelphia street. ELECTRIC RAILWAY. A force of electric railway surveyors have been engaged during the week in running another line through the Santa Ana canon east from Placentia towards Riverside. The report comes from Whittier that grading operations are ready to begin, and that the work is delayed on account of right-of-way disputes with three property owners between that town and the San Gabriel river. Huntington refuses to pay them their price and they have refused to make any concessions. Condemnation proceedings may ensue. CHASED BY A WILD MAN. A number of school girls of this city and Fullerton, while picking wild flowers in the foothills north of the latter place on Saturday afternoon, had a thrilling experience with a wild man which they will probably not soon forget. They drove in a conveyance from here to Fullerton, where the rig was hitched and the party walked thence to the foothills. While engaged in plucking flowers with which the hills are carpeted in every variegated hue, their attention was attracted to a man running toward them, and who was some distance away. The man is said to have been clothed only in his undergarments and he frightened the little girls almost into bysterries. They ran toward Fullerton and seeing a man at work in the Benchley orchard ran toward him. The wild man followed them to the edge of the orchard, when he beat a hasty retreat. The girls soon returned to their homes, where hair-raising accounts of their experiences were told their families. Who the man in undress uniform can be is a LIQUID AIR EXHIBITION. Anabeim is to have an opportunity of witnessing the marvelous things done by liquid air, an engagement having been made for a splendid lecture and expert demonstrator to appear here on Friday evening, April 3rd, bringing a supply of genuine liquefied air, and complete apparatus with which to perform the dozens of startling experiments that have recently attracted world-wide attention. Liquid air boils violently when placed on ice, and freezes water when placed over a fierce fire; it renders tin and iron brittle as glass, freezes quicksilver so hard that nails are driven in a two-inch plank, steel and electric light carbons will burn in it, rubber becomes like glass, tin and iron are made so brittle they will crush in the hand. Liquid air can run a heavy engine. Can be made a more powerful explosive than dynamite, will produce complete combustion of coal, garbage, etc., and there are scores of practical uses for its component gases. An entertainment on this up-to-date subject cannot fail to be interesting and profitable. At great expense the high school has engaged a liquid air entertainment for this city, with guarantee that a quantity of real liquid air will be brought, and all the remarkable experiments performed, of which so much has been read. A capable lecturer and expert demonstrator, with complete laboratory apparatus, will make this paradoxical subject clearly understood even by the young, and the marvelous experiments will entertain and astound all. The date will be Friday, April 3. CROP CONDITIONS THROUGHOUT STATE General Summary of the Weather Bureau for Northern and Southern California. Nearly normal weather conditions prevailed throughout the state during the week. Heavy rain fell in portions of Northern California and light rains in all other sections. No high winds or injurious frosts were reported. Thunderstorms occurred in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys on the first of the previous month. Grain made very good growth and is reported in excellent condition in all sections. More than the average acreage has been planted to wheat, barley and oats, and present indications are that the yield will exceed that of last season. In Southern California grain prospects are considered better than for several years. Summer-fallow plowing was suspended on account of the heavy condition of the soil, but work in hop fields continued. Grass made rapid growth and feed is abundant in all sections. Stock are doing well and improving. Southern California citrus orchards are in excellent condition and the trees heavily laden with blossoms. Vineyards and deciduous fruit orchards are reported in the very best condition in all sections, and many varieties of deciduous fruits are rapidly coming into full bloom. The outlook for large crops of fruits and grapes was never better. Late reports from Vacaville state that thousands of tomato plants in the hot beds were killed by the severe weather in February, all efforts to protect them having been unavailing. The weather was considerably warmer than during the preceding week in the Sacramento valley, though still somewhat cool for growing crops. Gentle rains toward the close of the week were beneficial. Slight damage was done to almond buds in Yuba county by the frosts of last week. Grain made good growth during the few days of warm, clear weather, and is reported in excellent condition in all sections; the outlook for heavy crops was never better. Green feed also made good growth and is now plentiful. Stock are in good condition. Work in hop fields is progressing, but summer-fallow... Obstreperous Youth. Ed. Long, a bucolic youngster from the classic precincts of Garden Grove, blew into town Saturday evening, coming from a place where no liquors are sold his thirst was such that he attempted to consume all the beer in town, he partly succeeded. He created no end of disorder in one saloon and going into another vouchsafeed the information that he could clean out the place with neatness and dispatch in the shortest possible order. The proprietor rang in a riot call to police headquarters which was answered by Marshal Steadman on the double quick. Long was found challenging three men to a fight and when Steadman admonished him that his exhuberant spirit must be calmed, Long struck at him a violent blow knocking his hat to the floor. Steadman placed his hand on Long's throat, thumb on one side, fingers on the other and gently pressed the obstreperous rooster into submission. Long was taken to jail and charged with disturbing the peace. He remained in durance vile during the night, and on Sunday morning his brothers' bailed him out, depositing $10 for his appearance in court. Long was taken home; he failed to appear in court and his ball money was declared forfeited. When in need of anything in men's furnishing goods, try Yungbluth & Kroeger. They carry the most up-to-date stock and best goods. SUNDAY SCHOOL CONVENTION. A convention of the Sunday schools of the county will be held in the Methodist Church in this city Friday, March 20th. Many varieties of deciduous fruits are in full bloom and give promise of heavy crops. It has been ascertained that the severe cold weather during February killed thousands of tomato plants in hot beds in the vicinity of Vacaville. Generally favorable weather conditions prevailed on the coast and bay sections during the week, except on the northwest coast, where the soil was too wet for cultivation and cool weather retarded growth of crops. Rain fell in all sections, and was very beneficia in the central and southern districts Grain continues in good condition and is making very fair growth; prospects for large crops are considered excellent. The acreage in wheat, barley and oats is reported greater than last season's. Green feed made good growth and is abundant in all sections. Volunteer hay will be a light crop in San Benito county. Showers have been frequent, and very beneficial to pasturage and all growing crops. Grain and grass are reported making satisfactory growth. Light hail fell in some sections last week, but caused no damage. Fruit trees and vines are doing nicely, and apricots are in bloom. Launcey Huggans of Fullerton $100 for selling liquors in Anaheim without a license. Huggans opened a retail liquor establishment here a year or more ago, but when the license was raised from $10 to $50 a month he found himself unable to pay it, and for several months "stood off" the city collector, not only for his license, but for the amount of his light and water bill as well. His license was thereupon revoked, and as he continued to dispense liquors he was placed under arrest and fined as stated. He appealed the case and moved his outfit back to Fullerton, where he resumed the business of conducting the "blind pig" of commerce. Recently he has had to give up the premises occupied by him in our neighboring town having failed to pay rent. The officials say that Huggans will have to pay his fine or do time in jail. Some new street hats just received at Miss Burger's. I will be glad to show them. ARBOR DAY. The Chamber of Commerce has started a movement to establish an arbor day for Anaheim. It has been suggested that some of the fraternal orders would probably take the work up, and a committee consisting of Messrs. Boyd and Johnson, was appointed to confer with the lodges of the city, to see what can be done in the matter. The conditions on Monday evening seemed to indicate a heavy rainfall, and it looked for a time that we should have an all night's rain. The weather was warm with the wind in the south, and for a time rain fell heavily. At 9 o'clock, however, the wind shifted to the northwest and the weather became cold, rain ceased falling and on Tueseay morning the ground was covered with a white frost, and ice formed in places. The season has so far been the most favorable In many years, rain promises well and a large area has been seeded. Reports come from the beet sugar section that the farmers are not satisfied with the prices paid for the beets raised by them and are abandoning that industry for others that promise better results. There is no apparent good reason why the sugar makers should not pay the farmers enough to enable them to realize a good profit. Reports come from the beet sugar section that the farmers are not satisfied with the prices paid for the beets raised by them and are abandoning that industry for others that promise better results. There is no apparent good reason why the sugar makers should not pay the farmers enough to enable them to realize a good profit. Certainly, the price of sugar and the cost of manufacture, as shown in the reports of the sugar companies, warrant the belief that a better price could readily be paid. They will have to do something in this line, or else become wholesale beet growers themselves, for so many farmers are going out of the beet growing business that the supply promises to be cut short—Alameda Encinal. John Hartung attended the concert given by Kocian in Los Angeles on Friday night. He made a business trip to the city on the noon train of that day, returned home on the 3 o'clock, which was an hour late and caught the 5 o'clock train into the city again in the evening. His impression of the show is that next to Kocian's being a great ladder he must be making pretty near as much money as a banker, for seats were $1.50 and $1.00 and standing room was at a premium. John also went to Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon when he attended the baseball game in company with Mr. Botsford. Judge Benj. F. Bledsoe, of San Bernardino, has been sitting in Judge West's department of the Superior Court during the week trying cases in which the Orange county judge is disqualified. Judge Bledsoe was the trial judge in the case of the water companies against Fuller, final discussion in which action has not yet been rendered. The judge, in denying defendant's application for a non-suit, rendered a lengthy discussion on the law points involved in the case. He is one of the youngest superior judges in the state, but has a reputation as a jurist which is second to none.
