MEETING OF
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Planting of Shade Trees Meets with Favor—Directors Decide to Still Further Advertise Anaheim
A rousing meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held in the city hall on Thursday evening of last week. More interest was evinced by the directors and our citizens generally than at any previous meeting. The future of Anaheim assumed a rosy hue under the general discussions which took place.
A proposition was read from a Los Angeles publishing house which agreed to print 5000 pamphlets advertising Anaheim for $110, and 10,000 for $190. Secretary Krick was instructed to make a personal call on the publishers and see if he could not secure a reduction in price, as the general impression was that the figures were a trifle steep.
Another advertising scheme which has become very popular with many cities is the mailing card, and it was decided that that matter should also be looked into.
The directors are now trying to figure out some scheme by which the necessary money can be raised to carry on the campaign of education.
President Boyd reported that he had interviewed members of the city council in regard to the planting of shade trees and that they were heartily in favor of the proposition, and would be pleased to receive suggestions from the Chamber. A committee consisting of Directors Stern, Baum and Grim was appointed a committee on shade trees to confer with a committee appointed by the city council.
Rev. Eugene Burr was present and tendered the directors a cordial invitation to be present at a public mass meeting to be held Sunday evening, February 22, in the Christian church, at which the Sunday closing movement will be under discussion. There was no action taken.
The next meeting of the Chamber will be held in the city hall on Thursday evening, February 26, at which time election of officers will occur. A large attendance is desired. Turn out everybody and help in pushing Anaheim to the front.
LETTER FROM HERMAN FESENFELD
Interesting Letter From a Fermer Anaheimer Who is Now Located in Washington
Herman Fesenfeld writes from Washington renewing his subscription to the GAZETTE, and adds the following words of interest:
"Our town is growing and has bright prospects for the coming summer, with five mills in course of erection. The capacity of the mills will be 100,000 feet per day, which will make a booming place out of Hoquiam. At the present we have now located here two large sawmills, two large shingle-mills and a big basket and box factory. Still I long for Southern California, where you don't get so everlastingly soaked as we do here. I would be pleased to have you make a trip to this northern country and see the big mills cut and hack out the lumber for your southern country. It is quite a sight to see them run day and night. You can form some idea from that what a demand for lumber there is. There is not a month goes by that a ship is not loaded for San Pedro from this port. I will close with my best wishes to you and family, and hope to be able to make a trip to your part of the globe some future day. I am, yours respectfully,
HERMAN FESENFELD."
Obituary
Mrs. Amanda M. Taylor died near Clair Thursday the 12th in the 76 year of her age. Although she had been in delicate health for many years, her last illness was of but two weeks' duration. She suffered from an affection of the heart, and an enlargement of that organ was the immediate cause of death. She had resided for seven years with her sister, Mrs. C. N. Brown, at whose home she passed away. The remains were taken to San Jose, the former home of the deceased, for interment. Mrs. E. E. Stubbs of Pasadena, sister of the deceased, and Miss Rose L. Brown of Clair accompanied the body. Mrs. Taylor was beloved by all who knew her for her gentle and kindly nature and her many excellent qualities. Besides her immediate relatives she leaves a wide circle of friends to mourn their loss.

ANAHEIM WINS GAME AT BOWLING
The Bowling Team from Pomona Make Hard Fight, but are Outclassed.
On Saturday a team of bowling experts from Pomona, after having on several occasions been compelled to cancel dates on account of rain and the consequent bad roads, arrived in this city. They were Messrs. Twoney, Stevens, Hill, Hunsaker and Gibbs. The team selected from among the Anaheim bowlers consisted of Fitzmier, Jones, Backs, Stone and Towner. C. Zeus acted as umpire and H. Stern, F. Backs and J. Leach were the scorers.
A series of three games was played, the first and third going to the locals, while the visitors, by a slight margin, took the second. The final score was: Pomona, 2127; Anaheim, 2216.
The locals will go to Pomona in the near future.
Special to the Gazette
SACRAMENTO, Wednesday afternoon.
President Thomas of the Water and Forest association just notified me that he has given up the fight on the Works Irrigation Bill, and the bill may be withdrawn. Orange county deserves the thanks of the irrigators for the splendid assistance of her citizens in this fight.

In Darkest Santa Ana
A Santa Ana correspondent writes as follows concerning a curious incident which occurred in that city Sunday night:
"Two were killed and the whole city darkened Sunday evening by a singular incident on the line of the Edison Electric company between here and Fullerton. The bodies of the dead were found at 4 o'clock this morning. The victims were an owl and a rabbit — electrocuted.
"The owl presumably caught the rabbit and flew upon the wires to eat its prey. Bird and animal crossed both transmitting wires, thereby creating a short circuit which burned both wires and the company's private telephone line. The lights went out at 8:30, and it took runners all night to locate the trouble.
The dead owl and rabbit lay on the ground directly under the sputtering wires which had been severed by the cross-current, and the cottontail was clutched by the talons as though they..."
A Suggestion
EDITOR OF THE GEZETTE:—As a stockholder of the Anaheim Union Water Company, believing that genius and masterly achievements, when demonstrated by officers of the company, is justly entitled to and should receive proper recognition at the hands of the stockholders, therefore, to commemorate the wisdom and masterly executive ability evinced by the head of the retired board, I offer for the consideration of the board-elect that it procure a sufficient number of embossed copies of Engineer Eaton's account ($1,500) rendered the company, and that a copy be presented to each stockholder.
To avoid a contest for the honor and credit due for securing Engineer Eaton's services, I am willing to concede that it was an emanation of the colossal brain of ex-President Sherwood.
GOOD HAY
The manager of the Harvey eating-house system has contracted with James T. Hart of Santa Ana for the delivery of 700 tons of alfalfa from Mr. Raitt's 200-acre patch south of that city. Harvey pays $2 more per ton for the Orange county product than he does for that grown in Kansas and Colorado, and says that it is enough better to warrant the difference in price. Two carloads of alfalfa, the first consignment, were shipped to Peet Springs, Arizona, where the Harvey dairies are situated, and will be fed to the cows there for milk. Harvey is also beginning to buy Orange county milk and cream in considerable quantities for his houses on the Southern California division of the Santa Fe.
Found Guilty
Argument in the Devoe battery case was concluded just before noon on Friday in Justice Freeman's court, Santa Ana, and the case given to the jury, which almost immediately returned a verdict of guilty.
An addenda to the verdict recommended Devoe to the clemency of the court. Judgment will not be rendered yet, as the case was postponed until today at 10 o'clock on motion for arrest of judgment, and in the meantime defendant's counsel will move for a new trial.
Steve Devoe was charged with battery upon the person of A. W. Jones, bookkeeper at the Los Alamitos beet sugar factory. There were many witnesses.

A team of baseball players from Tuftin was defeated in Fullerton Sunday in a 13-inning game played with the Stern & Goodman team. The score was 14 to 12. Two of the Fullerton team were disabled during the game. The teams tied in the ninth inning; score 12 to 12. Three innings were played without either side scoring. In the thirteenth Workman, third base man for the Fullerton team, went to bat with one man on base. He drove a high fly over the heads of the fielders, scoring a home run, which won the game.

SUGAR COMPANY'S NEW PLAN
The American Beet Sugar company is said to contemplate a new departure in the way of securing a crop of sugar beets in the peatland district. It is reported that offers have been made to owners of beet land to rent the land at a fair price and hire the owners to plant and raise beets, the sugar company to pay all expenses. Some contracts have been made on that basis, and it is said that a considerable age will be put in in that way.

To the Public
Any person saying that I have ever spoken ill of any insurance company or any employe of the same, I denounce as being a cowardly falsifier; and I will further state that those are the people who are afraid to meet a person face to face and are of the Judas Iscariot type.
I am sorry to say that Placentia has a few of this sort of people, who seek to injure a person behind his back by slanderous letter writing; consequently I warn the public, should they hear any such talking, to not recognize them as being worthy of any consideration whatever, and to be worthy of no notice.

"Some time ago my daughter caught a severe cold. She complained of pains in her chest and had a bad cough. I gave her Chamberlain's Cough Remedy according to directions and in two days she was well and able to go to school. I have used this remedy in my family for the past seven years and have never known it to fall," says Jas. Prendergast, merchant, Annato Bay, Jamaica, West India Islands. The pains in the chest indicated an approaching attack of pneumonia, which in this instance was undoubtedly warded off by Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. It counteracts any tendency of a cold toward pneumonia. Sold by all druggists.

WATER DISPUTE
A dispute over riparian rights has cropped up on the west bank of the Santa Ana river in Riverside county, where the Riverside Power company is prepared to take out water for electric purposes. Three families have built up homes and are raising fruit and vegetables on land adjoining the river, from which they secure water. The power company has built a dam above their land to carry water through a cement ditch far below them, cutting them entirely off from their riparian supply. E. A. Meserve of Los Angeles and F. D. Lewis of Riverside also own land there, and a fight for water will be on as soon as the works start up in the spring.

TO WHOM IS THE CREDIT DUE?
Many people who attend the entertainments given by the Quaker doctor and witness the marvelous cures performed by "Hal, the Healer," wonder whether the credit is due to "Hal" or to his wonderful remedies. This question can probably be answered best by "Hal" himself, who claims that all the cures and operations accomplished by him, which seem so miraculous, are due to the merits of his remedies alone and not to himself. But nevertheless there is a certain trait in "Hal's" character which makes him a wonderful man.
That he has been destined to the right calling is demonstrated by the easy manner in which he handles his audiences. He is always possessed of that free, easy and interesting way which never fails to win admiration and friends.
"Hal" will remain here the remainder of the week and give entertainments nightly. His offices are at the Pacific House. Dr. Wm. Edwards consulting physician.
BURGLARY
On Tuesday evening the residence of Peter Wisel, jr., was entered by burglars during the absence of the family. Entrance was effected by forcing a rear door. The miscreants were evidently frightened before accomplishing their purpose, as a large bundle containing many articles of value was found in one of the rooms. The thieves escaped with only a small amount of plunder.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA
For its next summer session, from June 25 to August 5, the University of California has secured the services of one of the best known American historical scholars, Albert Bushnell Hart, professor of history in Harvard University. Professor Hart's courses in Berkeley will be in "The Diplomatic History of the United States," and in some special period of American history. He has written copiously on American history and government. Among his published writings are, An Introduction to the Study of Federal Government; The Formation of the Union; Practical Essays on American Government; Revised Suggestions on the Study of the History of Government in the United States; Studies in American Education; A Guide to the Study of American History (with Edward Channing), and a biography of Salmon Portland Chase. Professor Hart is also editor of Epochs of American History, American History told by Contemporaries, The American Citizens Series, and A Source-Book of American History, and joint editor of the American History Leaflets and The American Historical Review.
An early inauguration of the University's new method for the examination of high schools has been insured by the appointment of Mr. W. Scott Thomas as examiner of schools and assistant professor of education. From August to December of each year, beginning with next August, Mr. Thomas will visit the high schools of California, studying each as a whole and familiarizing himself with each school's organization, its efficiency, its individuality, its inner spirit. From January to May of each year specialists will go out from various University departments in order that they may justly estimate, and at the same time, it is hoped, help to inspire and uplift the individual departments. Thus accrediting will be based on a thorough knowledge both of the separate departments of each school and of the school as a whole, as a living organism.
